  1. Oh yes... after the rpms didn't work I tried the tarballs. Then I got an error message something about the old kernel not being able to find it... <obviously... its not there> what do I do...?? -AA
  2. The whole install of 9.1 went great... absolutely no problems. When I wanted to install the NVIDIA drivers however, then the problems all began. I used the rpms and edited my XF86Config-4 file just like I did with 9.0 The only problem is, it worked with 9.0 its not working with 9.1 I cant start the X-Server at all anymore...? Something about not being able to find a monitor. Has any one else had this problem...? If not does someone know what I can do to get it to start the X-Server and have hardware acceleration....? Ta AA

Oh yes, I'm trying to get a screen capture card to work (bttv)... lspcidrake does show it in the list...!! Can someone help me.... PLEEZ !! ta
  5. Okay well I can't really help you there...? Search the forum. OR >>> Goto DOlson's page... Just search for one of his posts to get the link. But goto his twin view tutorial..
  6. Well I don't know how you'd do it for multi domains but try using exim Generally easier and imho much better...!!
  7. Yes it is possible...!! What screen card do you want dual displays on...?
  8. Which version of apache are ya using...? It's recommended to use apache 2... solves a lot of security bugs..!!
  9. What are you using for mail...? IE >>> Qmail OR Exim OR what...?
  10. The workstation machines should update their ip's automatically when told to get and ip from a DHCP. The lease is the time for which and 'ip configuration' is valid. Normally if your lease is set to one day, the workstations will will update their ip's everyday. The fact that your linux box isn't doing this troubles me. That means that something in your configuration is not quite right. Your linux box should update it's ip everyday too because thats what your DHCP server told it.!! I wouldn't know where to start though, but check yur settings...!! Let me know if you don't come right.

    Windows 2000 and Samba

It's gonna be quicker to re-install everything...!!
  12. At the end of the day the only way you're gonna get 100% CD quality is if you save everything onto your hard drive as a .wav Maybe one day though.... :-)
  13. pmpatrick... under the configuration section of grip under the mp3 tab you'll see a place where you can select the encoder. There is only one ogg encoder that comes with it!!, you'll have to install others if you want others. I think the standard one is "oggenc" if I'm not mistaken...!! Also go through the help files. THEY ARE EXCELLENT !!!

    RAID-Solution wanted!

I want mirroring though (RAID 1). But if software raid means using partitions I'll go with hardware raid. I want a whole image of drive A on drive B, so that if one of the drives should happen to kick the bucket I have a backup. At the moment I'm only running one IDE drive and if it should die, well yes. I'll be working for 2 weeks solid trying to recover 30 GB of user data.
  15. I figured it all out. mp3's are better than ogg's for one reason and one reason only. The equalizer in xmms does not work on ogg files, no matter what you do to the equalizer the sound does not change. mp3's however are affected by the equalizer. Try it for yourself !! The reason my ogg files sounded bad was because I had the equalizer enabled and when I played the mp3 the bass and trebble were boosted/emphasized nicely, when I played the ogg it was not boosted/emphasized. The ogg file therefor in comparison to the mp3 sounded flat and as if it were playing through a pillow...!! And ogg files are not that much smaller BTW. ripped at average 256 a 5 minute song and the ogg was a whole half a MB smaller !!!
  16. I used grip to rip both the ogg and the mp3 and xmms to play back both the ogg and the mp3...!! What encoder do you all use... maybe I should try all the other ogg encoders, but honestly, the ogg was really bad. I also don't care about size, I care about quality. I also like to think I know what quality is, after all I work in a radio station where quality is what we're after....!!

    RAID-Solution wanted!

Well, first problem is that the server is not an MDK distro. It's an E-Smith distro. It's a one CD Distro so chances are that whatever I might need will not be available without downloading of many packages and many dependencies...!! And yeah, i did mean IDE RAID. What makes Hardware RAID better than software RAID...?
  18. No i don't. But it might work as a good guide to getting temperature meters to work on other m/boards that are difficult. I use a GA-7vtxh. I can't get linux to display the temp on that one either. I might try using your tut as a guide and then see if I can get mine working...!! I'll keep it as is though...!!
  19. Is it cool then if I just copy it straight off the forum...?

    UpTime

Is the load calculated in percentage or some other kind of statistic...?

    UpTime

[root@poisonsoup root]# uptime 2:22pm up 8 days, 9:35, 1 user, load average: 1.18, 0.47, 0.31 What does the load average mean and how is it calculated...?
  22. I did a test. I ripped "Girls Under Glass - When I think About You" as an ogg file and as an mp3 file. Bitrate was VBR averaging 256 Kbit/s. When I played them back the mp3 sounded like it was ripped at 256, but the ogg sounded like it was ripped at 64. (it wasn't) The quality of ogg files blows. A couple of people have been ranting and raving about it, but honestly I can't understand why because the sound quality is just so poor in the ogg files. What do the rest of you think...?
  23. Would you like to mail me a tut that I can stick on my page...? You'll get full credit for it obviously...!! james@tuksfm.co.za
  24. Instead of using "startx", install "Xtart". Basically it is a simple menu system that allows you to choose which WM you want to use by simply entering a number. Allows you to start all of your WM's without any hassles.
