  1. Ok... silly user me knows nothing about ipchains but then I'm told that if you go on a coarse they spend a whole day on ipchains alone.!! Anyway back to my question. I want to block all traffic to a certain ip address / host. How do I do this.? The man file is helpful in explaining what every option does but it doesnt give examples. IE... if someone can give me an example on how to do this... like #ipchains -XYZ xx.xx.xx.xx [or whatever] Thanx in advance..!! AA
  2. Make sure that you have a couple of key elements in your smb.conf like "create mode" This is what could cause a share to work or not work with my experience.!! [Share Name] comment = Shared directory path = /home/shared read only = yes writeable = yes printable = no inherit permissions = yes create mode = 0666 But now that i look more closely I see that the problem is on your windows box... DOH.!! My mistake.!! The fact that it is an NTFS partition doesn't matter because the windows box handles the writing to the NTFS partition... Your linux box just tells doze what to write..!! I Have also found that when I mount drives manually they work much better that when i have used a silly tool of some sort.. Thats just personal experience
  3. Hey look... Don't fix what aint broke.. My experience in trying to get a mail server up that also runs a web-based interface, both redhat and mandrake were absolute cryte.!! They were impossible to get up and running, it took hours just to get half way through the job and then have something bomb out on me. Also I had to download and install everything manually. The debian worked beautifully first time. all that was needed was some configuration. installed everything straight of the ftp server.!!
  4. 1 word DEBIAN.... for a mail server you cant go wrong..!!
  5. HUH...? What the hell are you talking about. Why'd they block port 25..?
  6. qmail, postfix and exim are all MTAs. They all do the same thing, they're just different apps !! :-)
  7. Have you checked out Paul Sheer's book "Rute"... I think it will help you quite a lot. It helped me plenty..!! Here's a link: http://www.icon.co.za/~psheer/book/node33.html.gz Be sure to check it out and if you like the book, buy it. It's not often that you come across texts as good as this one is, and the author deserves to get something in return in my opinion.!!
  8. Weird..!! I had no problems with postfix at all.!! And in terms of "easy-bility" Exim is supposed to be the best for that..!! But if it's not broken don't fix it.!! kryolla: Did you eventually get qmail working okay for you..?
  9. I know a dolphin is a mammal, thats why I put it in ""..!! I should have used the term "sea creature" rather than fish. My point is this: When you want to sell eg. a car, you put the most beautiful women you can find on the bonnet. It's that whole first impression thing. If you really took the time to think about everything you looked at or names they gave to everything (by everyone) you have way too much time on your hands. I suppose for people that have way too much time on their hands to think about names as apposed functionability and usability, dolphin or bamboo would sound good to them. I'm not saying that redhat is better, I just think that redhat has a better naming scheme. Take "sea wolf" as an example. When you think about the name it could mean that it's the hunter and the killer in the big sea of linux distro's. It's number one and that other distro fear it... Any company that releases a product should think about what they're going to name their product because the name sells. I don't think that Mandrake's naming scheme does the job as well as it should. Maybe for a philosophy professor at a university, but then all they'd want to do is type in their word processor, in which case they'd use windoze!!
  10. IMHO try postfix rather than QMail... I run a qmail server but from texts I've read Postfix is apparently easier to use and a lot better... This I still don't understand as postfix and qmail seem very similar to me...... But back to the point MDK 9.0 comes with postfix, so why do you want to install qmail....??
  11. My site .... yeah... that's a dismal affair... I needed the hard drive for a workstation and after that I am gonna use the drive for a mail server.... so who knows when the site will be back up again... I should actually remove the link when I'm not feeling lazy... Hopefully it will be up again soon, when I have time to put together another server... need to scratch through tons of old PC parts and find parts that work..!! As for the MDK naming thing.. I'm not into this whole philosophical meanings of things... I like it to sound cool and mean, the whole first impressions thing I guess. But yeah you have a point about the bamboo thing, but then what about dolphin, a lot can be said about a dolphin but cummon, who wants their linux distro named after a "fish" !!
  12. In my opinion the names for Mandrake distro's blow.. bamboo >>> cummon. RedHat use cool names like psyche and sea wolf .!!! Their names are hardcore as apposed to mdk's soft names.!!
  13. I have changed my mind about 9.1 >>> after all my apps started to stop working, not being able to type in text boxes in mozilla and a number of other smaller problems I have gone back to MDK 9.0 9.1 is fast but in my opinion thats all it's got going for it, and the older installer is WAY better. I didn't like the new one from the start but after putting 9.0 back on I was reminded of how much better the old installer is...!!! Are there any other people in here who are slowly developing problems with their 9.1 >>> let me know. I am very curios now to know what is happening with other people's 9.1's
  14. KDE does have useful apps and it does look good I won't argue there. I used it for quite a while... but then I discovered fluxbox.!! Hmmm YES.!!!!! 9/10 times there is an equivalent that is just as good if not better that supports gnome environments so you don't really miss out on anything as such. I'll agree that KDE is an awsome WM, no arguments there, I just feel that it uses up too many resources that could be used elswhere, that's all...!! Now, about "dip"... what can you tell me..?
  15. Every time i update linux by re-installing it i loose all my urpmi sources and have to add them again. Now because I live in South Africa, adding urpmi sources takes a while because we are very limited when it comes to bandwidth as decent bandwidth is very expensive. Is it possible to back-up the urpmi sources before I re-do linux so that I don´t have to dedicate a whole day to updating my urpmi sources...? Your help in this matter would be very WiCKeD..!!! AA
  16. kppp is a KDE app isn´t it...? I don´t have KDE installed at all...!! I don´t really like it much, itś like running 2 OS´s at the same time which doesn´t really do much for me. Admitedly it looks very awsome but rather not...!!!!! what about dip ??? Can someone tell me anything about dip, because it looks like it´s a pretty simple and straight forward app.
  17. It connected, did the handshake and then dropped me.... there was an output but as i am nowhere near my pc at the moment i cannot tell you what the output was.... next time i am near to my puter i will paste the output...!!
  18. This is what i got when i wrote to goldwave...!! looks promising !!
  19. this is what Syntrillium sent me when I asked about a linux port...!!
  20. OK... I'll give 100 % of the information Zoltrix 56K V.90 Modem External connected to com port1 I'm running MDK 9.1 and I want to share it with a Windoze XP Box. I got it to dial up with wvdial, but as soon as it connected, it disconnected. The Harddrake did pick it up but couldn't do jack with it.... If I look in the hardware list it doesn't even exist. I want to be able to set it up, share it, dial, and then have both PC's surfing. Why should this be so hard ??? Need any other info..?? Somebody must be able to help me here because I'm stumped..!!
  21. aint no winmodem... its a zoltrix v.90 external modem... can someone PLEASE FREEKING HELP ME !!
  22. I goto my buddy's house right and all I wanna do is install his modem on my system so that we can dial up and share the internet connection. First I have to figure out how to install the modem... YEAH RIGHT !! then somehow get the thing to dial up and stay connected... YEAH RIGHT !! then somehow get the connection shared... YEAH RIGHT !! With MDK 9.0 I got it right somehow, who knows how, but now it's freeking IMPOSSIBLE. boot into windows, it installs, i add the dial-up account and TADA...!!! NO-PROBLEMS. I **REALLY** wish that it could and should be that easy in linux, but HELL no. If someone has some advice on how to get a modem working in linux, specifically 9.1 and shared PLEEZ tell me, I would really appreciate it. But for the moment I'm pissed off !!
  23. I am very impressed with the speed and performance improvements with 9.1 I've tried a couple of distros and this one kicks ASS. well of distros with precompiled kernels that is... what are your opinions...??? The installer sux though!!!
