  1. There is configuration tool in X that can change that setting. I believe it is under system-->configuration-->mandrake-->drakconf...something like that.. It'll be the screen that gives you all the configuration options for users, hardware, screen resolution etc. If you click on the one for hardware you get to another menu that has X as an option and that is the one where you can uncheck a little box that says "start x automatically". I had the same problem a couple of days ago...it was hard to find too, because instead of being under the "signon" or "users" option x configuration falls under a sub-menu ("hardware").
  2. ok...so I went to my local computer store and bought a KVM switch to go with this setup. (I am planning to be able to switch to my old laptop on the middle screen every once in a while.) I got one of these belkin kvm and its cool...but there is the BEEPing. Every freakin time i switch it beeps at me like its a microwave and my popcorn is ready. So, I think that...because it cost only $25 i will void the little sucker's 3 yr warranty and see if I can't disable the beep. I'm guessing its one of those buzzer thingies like they put in cheezy birthday cards and such. Perhaps I'll take a picture and see if anyone has any ideas.
  3. Ok so i've been pestering the users of this forum with my questions about multiple monitors and what card to get. Well I finally ordered a Jaton PCI Geforce 5200 2 head card (I already have a agp card). Funny thing is...I'm going to have 3 monitors instead of 2. I went to the used computer store and picked up 2 17inchers without stands for $30 each which was cheaper than getting a 21 or 19 for $80 or $90. So....now that i have all this junk coming soon where do i go for more information on setting it all up. I know i'll be using xinerama and probably tweaking the setup in KDE's configuration utility. Anyone have any ideas of what else i should try/ look at? Also both cards have the same (GeForce 5200) chipset. Does that mean I'll have to install the driver (modprobe) 2 times? (in my head this sounds like such a newb question).
  4. You say my 5200 will work but I have yet to find a S-video to VGA converter thingie. (The card has one VGA out and one S-video out.) If you know where I can find one of these converters or what they are actually called that would be great.

    VIA Audio

I had the same problem with my MSI onboard audio and I just changed the driver to the other via one listed in the driver selection list in hardDrake (xwindow version).
  6. Should I just cut it?...i mean...the computer has other problems and I'll be opening it up tonight after work.
  7. I believe its a 4000 (PIII) and I don't even remember it disabling the touchpad in windows if I hooked up a mouse. Maybe there is a solution at the bios level.
  8. I have a Dell inspiron from a couple of years ago and it has some problems. The biggest of which is that the mouse pointer drifts around the screen as a result of something being broken in the touchpad. How do i disable the touchpad (short of cutting wires) and only use a mouse that's plugged into the PS/2 port?
  9. Problem is I bought a card like this one: newegg.com nvidia card and it has one monitor out and one s-video out. Do they sell conversion cables for this problem? Because if their is a need for some $40 conversion box or whatever then i'll just buy another card.
  10. In response to your questions about sound cards...yes multiple sound cards are supported by many a *nix variant (including linux). Why would you have multiple sound cards? Many more channels is the answer...a high end dolby surround system only has 5 channels and bass. Just imagine the realism with many more channels. Of course you need some sort of software processor to filter and send signals to all your multiple channels...check out VBAP. The idea though is that you need a lot more speakers/channels to get a better 3D effect, than is cost effective (like around 15-20). Also in these setups you usually have to stand dead center in them or they don't work as well.
  11. ...the geforce 5200 isn't that fast, so I guess I will be forced to buy another card if I want to keep the same image quality I have now. My real question is...should I buy a card that is at the 5200's level or can i buy a crappy card. Will a crappy card slow things down? Also, since I would like to play some games can I set it so that at startup I have the option of 1 or 2 monitors (with a default of 2 after 5 seconds of course)? Also, I will probably be using xinerama to handle the dual displays...they will be CRT's with similar refresh rates, etc.
  12. xine...needs to be treated gently or it locks up/crashes...has good quality video mplayer...there is a way to get it to play even the new windows media player files... totem...all around good stuff...never crashes...dvd support not so good... ...if you have time to read all our posts then you have time to install and uninstall all of the above
  13. Right now i'm running a single monitor on a AMD 64 with 512K of RAM (hey its expensive right now), mdk10rc1, and a GeForce FX5200. I'm thinking about putting in an even crappier video card and slapping a slightly smaller monitor to the side of my system. Should I get another nvidia card...will they conflict with one another...i already know about xinerama...what about performance...will 2 video cards lug things down at all?...could i make the bootloader give me the option of loading one or both of the cards...for special use...like single screen games, etc.
  14. Problems (as i see them) that i've encountered: -install probs -package reference and mismatching probs -people report stuff not installing that they checked off in install -hardware recognition issues But I use it and love it so...
  15. I am...when i run the install script is when it gives me the error....its like the script wasn't meant to run on a 64 for some reason
  16. I'm running mdk 10 for amd 64 rc1 and i'm using firefox as my webbrowser. I tried installing the macromedia flash plugin, but it says that the installer doesn't support my architecture. So I'm screwed...but i bet it works if you just put the files that the installer installs in the right places. Does anyone know what these files are and where they go? Because I can get them off my other computer. I know there is a plugin file that goes in the plugin directory but other than that i'm clueless.
  17. Yeah, I agree that it is weird, but I am using Mdk 10 rc1 for amd 64 so it isn't exactly super stable. I actually sort of did what you just said last night. I poked around one of the ftp mirrors for mdk and got it to work. Basically if you set up a new resource in rpmdrake that is to an ftp mirror that references the hdlist file not the hdlist2 file. Then it works, downloads the dependencies and everything. You just have to remember to disable that resource for regular used (CD installs, updating, etc.)
  18. tried urpmi gnucash...but it doesn't work so i tried it with the --allow-nodeps switch and it seemed to work but then asked me if i wanted to proceed even though I didn't have libgnome installed. so I tried to install libgnome...but it tells me that its already there. wierd
  19. ok...i tried something else...I downloaded the rpms (because the computer i'm installing it on isn't connected to the internet at the moment) and if i try to install gnucash it says I need libgnucash. And when I try to install libgnucash it says i need to install gnucash. How do I get it so it does the thing where it installs them both at the same time without stopping because the dependencies aren't installed?
  20. Everything works fine, except tuxracer. However, racer from racer.nl works like a charm (only runs at like 20 fps tho). If you guys are into cars or racing at all, take a look. Maybe someday this will rival gt3 (maybe)
  21. I know it should be on the package list...but its not...and I can't figure out why not so i'm compiling it. Thanks for your help though.
  22. I'm trying to compile gnucash but it says that it can't find gnome-config. Where/what package do I install to get this?
  23. it works...awesome Thanks a billion oh and glx gears gets 1113.2 FPS in default size and about 93 full screeen (how does that compare) I'm run a geforce 5200 AMD 64 3000 soon to clock like the 3200 and an MSI K8T NEO and 512 K RAM
  24. Ok I got it to work: -I used the drivers from that brazilian website that I had previously installed that didn't look like they worked. -All I had to do was type modprobe nvidia and it worked. Now my question is: If that works, is there some sort of startup file or script or something I should put modprobe nvidia into?
  25. Ok here is where i'm at now i did uname -r and rpm -qa | grep kernel-source and they didn't match. So I uninstalled the 2 that were there that didn't match. Then I installed the one that matches. Then I tried installing the driver...but I still get the error that says it is looking for /lib/modules/2.6.3-9mdk/build/include/linux/modversions.h and that it is probably because the kernel sources aren't configured properly. Problem is...according to you guys and rpm -qa | grep kernel-source the source is properly configured. Do I have to compile object files or something? Any ideas would be helpful... Also mods you might want to sticky this post...Sherpa has a lot of good info here.
