  1. It's on your cds for sure. Open the Mandrake Control Center (MCC), clic 'Software Management' and 'Install Solfware'. Make a search for 'quanta' and clic on the box 'quanta ..' and clic 'install'. Rpmdrake will ask you to put in the cd that quanta is on. Alternatively, you could open a console and su to root (type 'su' and enter the root password) and type the following: urpmi quanta They both do the same thing.. Cheers ! MOttS
  2. you have to be ROOT to 'make install'. And everything has to be ended without error before (I mean the 'make', 'make dep' ...) MOttS

You not gonna learn anything by always reinstalling.... But that's your choice... MOttS
  5. Netscape composer isn't that bad. There is also Mozilla composer (very similar to Netscape). If you use Star Office there is a web designer prog in it. You could also try Quanta ( http://quanta.sourceforge.net/ ) or Bluefish ( http://bluefish.openoffice.nl/ ) If you want to buy a software then IBM websphere studio ( http://www-3.ibm.com/software/webservers/studio/ ) .. I've been told that they were making a linux version. Didn't check though. Good luck ! MOttS
  6. ok guys .. newbies question here: How does that works ? I did what is specified to do from the above web site but I get: Here, 192.168.1.250 is a computer running MacOS X on my LAN. I tried with VMWare but I got the same answer from Win98. What exactly I have to install on those boxes? And what will appen if they change their IP or they are off while I type this command? Also, my mom's computer isn't always on so will I loss the ssh connection ? .. I know nothing   So far I installe all the ssh rpms. 1)openssh-3.4p1-4mdk 2)openssh-clients-3.4p1-4mdk 3)openssh-server-3.4p1-4mdk It look like complicated to ssh .. boyyyyyyyyy MOttS
  7. Daniel.. you avatar rocks !!!  Which option is that ? TightVNC, FTP, Webmin or ? Ok so after thinking about that, I think I'm going to vote for the TightVCN option WITH ssh. Anyway my parents don't have any ftp browser and we can't type ftp://blablabla just like in Konqueror with IE... lol. Ok so here is what I found. http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/secure/sssh5.html#vnc Did anyone ever try it ? Also, how could I make sure the datas are sent encrypted via ssh ? ... I mean, how can I make sure the connection is secured or that I use ssh ? Thx for the reply !! MOttS
  8. HI all !! I'm going out of town during christmas and I'd like to be able to access my files. I'm going where they uses an old P233 with Win95    My computer is always on the net for my web page and I'm connected using adsl (down=128KB/s, Up=16KB/s). My parent's computer is connected to the net with a cable company .. faster than my adsl connection. I have think to a couple of choises to remotly access my desktop/files. Tell me what you think about that plez. 1) TightVNC: I could start a vnc session before to leave home and remotly connect to it with IE (if Win95 supports JAVA   ). But AFAIK, only the password is encripted and once the session is opened, all the datas are sent in plain text file .. not really secur. Also, TightVNC is slow. However I could really access my computer in the real sense.. I mean I could see the desktop, check my mails from Evolution, check some other stuff.. even work on my webpage and update some stuff. lol 2) FTP: I could configure ProFTPd so that I could access my $HOME directory... with my username and password of course. Not an anonymous site. However, I could not access the rest of the system, neither 'administrate' my system. Is it secur enough ? 3) Webmin: I could connect to my computer from port 10000 via a secured shell (https). This is the most secure solution. However I'm not really used to Webmin. There is tons of options and I'm not used to them. Do you guys have comments or suggestion of other methods? Thx MOttS

    Dependency Problem

Cooker stuff is rarely build with against packages that are on our cds. They probably build postfix with a cooker version of openssl and coreutils. So if you really want to install that cooker version, go to www.rpmfind.net and search for the cooker of openssl and coreutils and hope it will be the good one... BTW, postfix is on our cds --> install with 'urpmi postfix' and VOILA ! Hope this help MOttS

    Shutdown Error

NMB is a diamon needed by Samba. Samba is a program to share files with a Windows machine. Do you share files ? I'm starting to think that you installed every possible packages when you first installed MDK. Now, lots of unnecessary junk runs on your computer without you knowing that. I suggest you open up the Mandrake Control Center, clic 'System' and 'Services' and clic to NOT START AT BOOT all the services that you don't really need. This way your computer will run faster and safer too. You can refer HERE to know whether a service is required, optionnal or useless. You can also ask here on the forum. For NMB, you have to turn Samba off (SMB) in the MCC->System->Services. That _should_ solve you 'umount: /net' problem too... MOttS
  12. Keep in mind that this program sucks. You can locate it by typing 'locate wine'. If locate isn't installed then type urpmi slocate updatedb and do a 'locate wine' once it is installed. There is no GUI for wine btw. You have to run something with wine. Something like wine /mnt/windows/programs files/notepad MOttS

  14. You should have those files .. 'chmod 666 /dev/nvidia*' make the files to be read/write accessible by everyone using the computer. And you have to 'chown' and 'chmod' AS ROOT. MOttS

    Shutdown Error

hahah You should have been able to tell me what amd is !! from -> http://www.twuug.org/lists/twuug/2002-04/msg00450.html Mandrake uses Supermount by default and not Automount. Have you installed Automount ? Now turn apmd off with the 2 above commands and reboot 2-3 times to see if everything is ok ... Your system with not explode .. come on. MOttS
  16. There is 2 lines with a <dri> in it in /etc/security/console.perms. Here they are: So when you are droped in a shell, double check that you commented out the '<xconsole> 0600 <dri> 0600 root' as well !! You should also do as root: chmod 0666 /dev/nvidia* chown root /dev/nvidia* Then reboot and see if that solved the problem. Hope this help MOttS

    Shutdown Error

From 'man devfsd' From http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/admin/aservice2.html So don't turn this off. I would turn apmd and restart to see it that solved the problem first ... I have no idea what amd is... oh yeah.. my cpu is made by amd ..  MOttS
  18. If you did a 'make install' (as root) in the program's directory, the program is now in /usr/local/ or /usr/local/share. However, if you didn't type 'make install', all the stuff is in your $HOME directory. Here is a links answering your queston.. The important part is by YinYeti and is close to the end.. http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php...1617&highlight= You _should_ unpack the .tar.gz into /usr/local/src/. 'make install' on top of the program's directory will install the program in the Linux hierarchy. However, /usr/local/src is completely up to you. I myself have some stuff in /usr/local/src and a 'program' directory in my home directory... I guess it's up to you. Here is a quote from -> http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/basics/bfiles.html Hope this help a bit MOttS

    Shutdown Error

This is from /etc/init.d/apmd: This is completely useless, unless you have a laptop. And this is not related to cups in any way... You can turn this featue off safely with the following commands (as root) service apmd stop chkconfig apmd off This turns apmd off right away (service apmd stop) and teach it to NOT restart next time you boot (chkconfig apmd off) Hope this help MOttS
