  1. The top file is gone. Got the second already, and downloading the kernel that you posted, as the one I downloaded before was 17 meg and this one is 41 meg. I'll try to trace the dep's down.
  2. Yeah, I Googled and found it also, but I keep getting run in circles. Downloaded kernel 2.6.3.4 (i guess that's right), but I try to urpmi it and it has some deps. I install the deps but it still gives me same error. I thought someone might have a better place/way. I tried arthur's reccomendation of this page, but the link there is dead. I'll give your sources a shot.
  3. Ok where is the best place to find the needed files and their deps?
  4. Updated my mirrors, but I keep getting [root@kevins kevin]# urpmi kernel-2.6.3 no package named kernel-2.6.3 What am I doing wrong?

Edited fstab like you recomended, DragonMage, but no change. I noticed that when I open /mnt/removable, the drive light on the removable drive flickers for a second. It's making the connection, but no files show up in the directory, and anytime I try to write (in this case, create a file) to the drive I get the following error Any reccomendations?
  6. I'll go along with most everyone else and say "build your own". I do like the Macs, but I assume when you ask for the better buy, you want to factor in cost, and since Mac uses the high grade stuff, that puts it out of my better buy category. Although if I had some $$$ I'd have to say Mac.
  7. Actually, the gap is narrowing. Can't speak for all areas, but I know that much of our military technology is being trailed and sometimes suprassed by private sector tech. At the rate that technology is being developed, once our gov. decides to fund something, It's already old news.
  8. They've alread got those on certain cars. I live in Houston and a young girl was just prosecuted for IV Manslaughter (I think) because she was in an accident where one of the passengers in her car was killed. The article that I read said that they determined that she was at fault when they checked the computer for the speed and hard brake and also compared the time to the trafic signal at that location. Ended up that she sped thru a red light. May have been good in her case, but I still don't like the idea. Caused quite a controversy here. People wanting lists of affected vehicles and how to shut the monitoring system off.
  9. Wow. Lots of info. The main reason that I wanted to upgrade, is because I have been having trouble getting a USB HD working (see THIS thread). I thought it might be a problem that could be solved with an updated kernel. Do you think that it would help. Really, that was the only reason that I wanted to upgrade. Everything has run smooth as it is now, and I don't want to rock the boat if no one thinks that the 2.6 kernel will help.

That fixes the multiple mount problem, but I'm still stuck trying to get mandrake to read/write to the usb HD.
  11. 3 months into MLAW (My Life After Windows) :D . Here's something I probably should have looked into sooner, but didn't. Guess I was just chicken. I read Arthur's post in the FAQ section regarding the kernel upgrade to 2.6. My question is, for a noob like myself is this the best and simplest way to upgrade? It seems straight forward enough, but comming from a long Windows history, I'm still a bit nervous when thinking about messing with the kernel.... (kernel, kernel - still fun to say). Right now I'm running 2.4 with Mandrake 9.2 download ed. Also Is 2.6 what I want, or should I be looking for something else?
  12. Ok multiple reproductions of zip and usb HD issue has been solved by scoopy's remove/reboot/repeat method  (it works - I swear). The method was given to me by scoopy in a PM. For those of you who would like to know, It consists of unplugging the usb items, deleting the fastab entries of those items that point to sba, reboot, plug in usb items and reboot again - "repeat as needed" (Sounds like a shampoo commercial) Thanks for your help on this scoopy. Now back to working on the original problem

Ok multiple reproductions of zip and usb HD issue has been solved by scoopy's remove/reboot/repeat method  (it works - I swear). The problem of Mandrake being able to read/write to the HD remains. If anyone has any other suggestions, I would appreciate the help.
  14. I would like to ask for forgiveness in advance if I'm doing something that I'm not supposed to. This is a new topic, extending from another topic. It seems that I have another problem steming from the previous topic. Here's what's going on now: First, here's my fstab: /dev/hda6 / ext2 noatime 1 1 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount dev=/dev/scd0,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,sync,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hda2 /mnt/windows ntfs ro,iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0 0 0 none /mnt/zip supermount dev=/dev/sda4,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0 none /mnt/removable supermount dev=/dev/sdb1,fs=ext2:vfat,--,codepage=850,kudzu,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 none /mnt/removable2 supermount dev=/dev/sda1,fs=ext2:vfat,--,codepage=850,kudzu,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 none /mnt/zip2 supermount dev=/dev/sdb4,fs=ext2:vfat,--,codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1,kudzu 0 0 This is the situation. If i turn my usb HD on while I am in mandrake it mounts the drive as "sdb1". If I turn the usb HD on before I start mandrake it mounts the drive as "sda1". If I turn it off and back on again I start getting reproduced mounts. ex - removable2, removable3, removable4, etc. Now for some reason, when I rebooted this last time, mandrake decided to double mount my zip drive. It did the sdb1 and sda1 thing with that drive also. To this point nothing has been wrong with the zip drive. It has always been a single mount that has worked fine. Everytime mandrake mounts another copy, the previous ones don't work anymore (I mean the zip - usb HD has never worked). Help!!

    Ok now I'm really confused. Here's the latest developments. First, here's my fstab: /dev/hda6 / ext2 noatime 1 1 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount dev=/dev/scd0,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,sync,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hda2 /mnt/windows ntfs ro,iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0 0 0 none /mnt/zip supermount dev=/dev/sda4,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0 none /mnt/removable supermount dev=/dev/sdb1,fs=ext2:vfat,--,codepage=850,kudzu,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 none /mnt/removable2 supermount dev=/dev/sda1,fs=ext2:vfat,--,codepage=850,kudzu,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 none /mnt/zip2 supermount dev=/dev/sdb4,fs=ext2:vfat,--,codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1,kudzu 0 0 This is the situation. Everytime mandrake mounts another copy, the previous ones don't work anymore (I mean the zip - usb HD has never worked). Help!! I think I'm going to make another post for this new problem, unless you know something about this.

I'll have to get back to you in a few hours. I'm at work on my Windows only laptop. (I'm working up the courage to try to install on the laptop) Glad to hear your's is working better :D Wish mine was.
  17. Like ShadowFoxLSU, I bounce between fluxbox and GNOME. Mostly in GNOME right now because I am still a new Linux convert and it's easy to use without reminding me too much of Windows (still a little bitter), but as I get used to Linux a little more, I'll probably migrate to fluxbox. Might stay with GNOME a little longer if I could get that dang Gdesklets to work right :D

Still pretty new at this. arthur, you said What/where exactly is the options area that you are referring to?

Little update. I tried to set mine up the way your's is scoopy, just for grinns , but didn't have any luck. When I try to mount from a terminal, I get an error. (Ill have to wait till this evening to post the exact error, as I am at work right now and my laptop only has Win installed ((company prog's req.)), although, I would like to dual boot my laptop, but I'm not brave enough yet.)
  20. I guess I have to leave it to the pros. Sorry. bad kmc77, bad - no treat for me :D

Yeah, zips working fine. Don't know why it's numbered 4. Is there a way to temporarily dissable supermount?

aRTee, I have followed your instructions, but can only get as far as turning on the usb drive again. Once I start the usb drive, supermount remounts it and overwrites the line I just added in fstab. Here's what it looks like: /dev/hda6 / ext2 noatime 1 1 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount dev=/dev/scd0,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,sync,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hda2 /mnt/windows ntfs ro,iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0 0 0 none /mnt/zip supermount dev=/dev/sda4,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/scsi/host1/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 /mnt/mount vfat umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 none /mnt/removable supermount dev=/dev/sdb1,fs=ext2:vfat,--,kudzu,codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 The line with the full location was entered as /mnt/removable, but once supermount gets to it, it becomes /mnt/mount. Did I miss something here?

You were right Scoopy, dev/sdb1 failed as well as some other things. It all shot thru so fast, that I didn't get everything. Is there a way to pause boot so that I can see them? Also, I got a couple of boxes that asked if I wanted to run certain config tools, while It was booting. I said no for now. Should I go ahead? One more thing, supermount added removable back into fstab. Here's what It looks like now /dev/hda6 / ext2 noatime 1 1 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount dev=/dev/scd0,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,sync,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hda2 /mnt/windows ntfs ro,iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0 0 0 none /mnt/zip supermount dev=/dev/sda4,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usbHD vfat umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 none /mnt/removable supermount dev=/dev/sda1,fs=ext2:vfat,--,kudzu,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 Still nothing showing up in removable.
  25. Not sure if this will help. I'm relatively new here myself, but I have a similar problem with my laptop and wireless card. Are you trying to send email at a location, away from your home? In my situation, I use my laptop both at home and at work. At home everything was fine, but at work, I was unable to send email (rec. was fine). It turns out that my ISP blocked any outgoing email that originated outside of their area. They said it was supposed to cut down on outside spammers, or something like that. No solution for me, except to use webmail for outgoing from my office. May not be the same problem for you, but it sounded so simmilar, I thought I would post.
