  1. Installed LE2005 on my old dual processor Compaq5100 on Saturday. As always Sound card configure showed "Configure later",so whats new 9.0 and 9.2 and 10.1 all did the same. Only difference was sndconfig brought up some other app which did not find the onboard ESS1868, Messed about trying to sort this out - gave up as bad job and went to bed. Who needs sound when you are deaf and wearing hearing aid. Music sounds tinny from everything. Googled for kudzu this am and got a link from LinuxCompatiblle.org and lo and behold we now have SOUND.. Hooray for Linux and all its many flavours..:-)) Phil from Frome. UK
  2. For once we got the other side of the coin with Linux. I installed 10.1 CE onto Dell GX270 which has the e1000 Intel 865 Graphics Card and the install identified the chip and 10.1 CE took 1024x 768 and 16million with no problems at all. Same with LE2005. I dual boot this box with Win 98SE and had a lot of problems getting the correct display on the Windoze OS had to download pack of drivers from Intel to get it working. Linux 1 MS O. :D Phil I
  3. Yes Ian have always used Lilo before with 9.2 and 10.1. Later in the day I did take bull by horns and power down - fed GX270 with Disk 1 of LE2005 and went for upgrade. Came out the other side with nice boot splash followed by leering Penguin. After that I went to bed. In retrospect I think I may have been lulled by the ease of installation of Le2005 and may have missed an instruction somewhere along the way . Lost a few passwords on the web in the shuffle but no real problems emerged up to now. Many thanks for your suggestion. Phil I
  4. Finally took plunge and upgraded from 10.1CE to LE2005 on my Dell GSX270 P4 2.4 which was dual booted with Win98ME. On reboot at finish I get usual opening but instead of the usual splash screen giving me the options of Linux - smp et et + Windows I get a blank screen with GRUB and a flashing cursor. Have tried inumerable combinations of keys with no success. Fortunately have my old Compag5100 Dual Processor still in commission so have been able to search fora plus google but no enlightenment there. Any advice - suggestions gratefully received. Phil I .
  5. In 3.1 I used to click Config-KDE-Information-NetworkInterfaces This produced a nice Gui giving ip details of the cards in my machine which I kept on my K button for easy access. Facility seems to have disappeared from 3.2. I know I could open a console and call ipconfig but its a bit longwinded. Any suggestions??. Tks in adv. Phil I
  6. Well noted AJ . Will order up DVD of 2005LE . Will have to delete 10.1 CE in anycase to load Win 98SE. Have to say that I downloaded the updates to 10.1 and have been impressed by the quantity and quality of the programmes available. Have also to say that MDK 9.2 been running for 18months with only one small aggravation caused by my own stupidity. Shall have no option but to leave 9.2 exactly as it is on the Compaq 5100 as my wife will in no way accept any variation from the profile she has at present . Thanks for your advice - also to DDMcse Phil
  7. Alongside my old Compag 5100 dual processor (running Mandrake 9.2 ) now have Dell GX270 with 74GB HD. which I loaded with Mandrake 10.1 CE with no problems. Am toying with idea of putting Win 98SE onto this machine in some of the surplus space.. What sort of problems am I likely to encounter? Tks in advance for any suggestions. Phil
  8. click on K in panel, then on Networking, then on Remote Access; gives you Kppp and the Kppp log viewer.
  9. Hi Spiny Norman and Anon. Well noted your comments and I did infact originally enter the correct line into console (wonderful thing cut andpaste :D ) For the sake of good order and to be certain have just done same again with following result. [ phil]$ su Password: locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: Invalid argument locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: Invalid argument locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: Invalid argument [phil]# cdDesktop bash: cdDesktop: command not found [ phil]# cd Desktop Desktop]# [root Desktop]# rpm -ivh --replacefiles --replacepkgs perl-5.8.1-0.RC4.3mdk.i586.rpm error: Failed dependencies: perl-base = 2:5.8.1-0.RC4.3mdk is needed by perl-5.8.1-0.RC4.3mdk perl(re) is needed by perl-5.8.1-0.RC4.3mdk perl(warnings::register) is needed by perl-5.8.1-0.RC4.3mdk [root Desktop]# Thanks for your interest in my difficulties. Any suggestions gratefully received . Your keen eyes will have noted my ability to enter cdDesktop without the space. Says legions for my CLI ability
  10. Yes Still have discs. As I said in earlier post - for me its no problem (at the moment anyway) to just ignore the opening messages and accept that software management is u/s. I will wait for 10.2 (sometime in March is my understanding and do upgrade then. Anyway Steve it has been a good experience for me to work with you (albeit at a distance - about 3000m at a rough estimated) and a learning one for me. Thanks again for all your help Phil from Frome. Som. UK
  11. Many thanks for your c ontinued attention to my problem. here are the results of the above as presented phil@ phil]$ su Password: locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: Invalid argument locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: Invalid argument locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: Invalid argument [root@ phil]# cd Desktop [root@ Desktop]# rpm -ivh--replacefiles -replacepkgs perl-5.8.1-0.RC4.3mdk.i586.rpm -ivh--replacefiles: unknown option [root@ Desktop]# rpm -ivh --replacepkgs perl-5.8.1-0.RC4.3mdk.i586.rpm error: Failed dependencies: perl-base = 2:5.8.1-0.RC4.3mdk is needed by perl-5.8.1-0.RC4.3mdk perl(re) is needed by perl-5.8.1-0.RC4.3mdk perl(warnings::register) is needed by perl-5.8.1-0.RC4.3mdk [root@ Desktop]# seems to open up even more discrepancies. I was originally running MDK v9.O then upgraded to 9.2from cd nrs 1 2 & 3. with download from site so screen shows MDK9.2 Download edition. Does any of this make sense> ??. B. Rgds Phil
  12. I did that. Now got the file sitting on desktop with rpm icon. rightclicked starts SoftwareInstaller in taskbar and after 50/60 secs. SoftwareInstaller goes off. In Konsole then did your rpm ivh replace line got this:- error: open of perl-5.8.1-0.RC4.3mdk.i586.rpm failed: No such file or directory went su got same result. B. Rgds Phil
  13. Did both of those wound up with this: [root@ phil]# rpm -ivh --replacepkgs perl-5.8.1-0.RC4.3mdk.i586.rpm error: open of perl-5.8.1-0.RC4.3mdk.i586.rpm failed: No such file or directory [root@ phil]# Your url came up on Browser titled as :perl-5.8.1-0RC4.3mdk.i586.rpm(audio/x-pn-realaudio-pluginObject)-Mozilla and this triggered a recollection that a few weeks ago I aborted a download of RealPlayer10 as I did not like the look of it. Possible cause of the problems I now encounter??. B. Rgds Phil
  14. Thanks for that Steve. Just off to bed now 23.07 here in Frome (where everybody goes to bed early) Will do just that in the morning and hopefully solve problem. B. Rgds Phil from Frome, Somerset UK.
  15. Thanks for your continued interest in my problem Steve. Is very much appreciated. Here is what I got from urpmi perl. [ phil]$ su Password: locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: Invalid argument locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: Invalid argument locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: Invalid argument [phil]# urpmi perl bash: urpmi: command not found [root phil]# This was this morning 09.26 gmt . response yesterday was slightly different . Had another llook at your Repair Script. (Jan 11 rev.) Still frightens me
  16. Did grep perl. and got:- perl-5.8.1-0.RC4.3mdk then was not able to access with answer "not installed". Steve: Many thanks for your advice on this. I do not fancy trying your other option as I think this is would be way over my head. (Old - Grey - Addled). As the lack of access to Software install is not a real problem in the true sense of the word and I can live with the 3 messages appearing on console I shall let sleeping dogs lie and hang on till MDK 10.2 arrives in March and do a clean install then. B. Rgds Phil
  17. Thanks for prompt reply Steve. 18. In Mandrake Control Centre in Software Management I click on the icons but get no response. Other sections of MCC work ok. Cannot recall having done anything particularly stupid lately but have noticed when at CLI get three lines of info before log in prompt. Like so:- locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: Invalid argument locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: Invalid argument locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: Invalid argument above may of course have nothing to do with my problem. Running Mdk 9.2/KDE 3.1on Dual Processor Compaq 5100 for about 8months now with no real problems to speak of. Any pointers to a resolution of the non-response would be appreciated. Phil from Frome, Som.
  19. Had this problem but was told to go from splash screen f1 to prompt and enter alt1 This worked for me. HtH
  20. Thanks for the post VDub. Since my original post have located an app. which will run on KDE v.3.1 I shall have to upgrade my distro to accomodate this so cannot say yet whether it works or not. There are a lot of people out in the sticks who will never be able to use Broadband via wire or wireless because of their particular location and will not consider stumping up Satellite charges which would be uneconomic for their usage of the WWW.
  21. New user of Mandrake v9.0 on SMP (Compaq 5100) My ISP recently introduced full v92 protocol working and since I cannot justify spending money on broadband I am keen to take advantage of these features. I installed a PCI Zoom 3025 on my Windows P100 box with success and since I found it the total solution to having only one phone line acquired a external Zoom 3049 V92. This works fine straight out of the box on the Compaq 5100 using Kppp. Problem is I need a Linux app. like 'NetWaiting Modem- on - Hold to use its full capability. Does anyone have any possibilities - work around - suggestions I could pursue. Thanks in advance for your co-operation. Phil.
