  1. You may get an answer more quickly on the Xandros forum. Go to the Xandros website to find a link to its forum. It's an excellent forum with very friendly people who try their best to help, similar kind of people as here on mandrakeusers. Please respond back here with your experience there with your problem. Good luck! Sincerely, Richard
  2. I installed FC2 on my laptop, a Toshiba 5005-S507. At the time of installation, I had my Netgear Notebook Adaptor FA411 car in a slot. (I am using this because the ethernet card built in the laptop is broken.) In addition, I also use a Linksys WPC11 ver. 3 card when at internet cafes. It also isn't working. When I boot up and show details, there is a line that says: "pcnet_cs device eth1 does not seem to be present". I am a "nontechie simpleton", so thorough, step by step instructions would help me greatly. Overall, this has been the easiest install on my lappy, with SuSE9.2 the next easiest (Many problems with MDK10.1 OE Powerpak d/l as member of club, and with FC3). In advance, thanks to all who respond. Richard
  3. When I had MDK10.0 OE on my Toshiba 5xxx laptop last April, DragonMage pointed me to a site to download an upgraded kernel .rpm that was above the 2.6.5. After doing so, there were many times (but not evertime) that I had to use command mode as root to reinstall the Nvidia driver that I had downloaded for 3-D Acceleration, then switch to user and type "startx". It only took about 90 seconds to do, but was still a slight inconvenience. Unfortunately I wiped out all my distros on my Toshiba, installed MDK 10.1 OE on hda5 (& left partitions for other distros, which I haven't installed) and the boot up freezes on "Checking new hardware....". The one time I was able to get into KDE, I tried to launch Mandrake Control Center and upon its launching, the computer froze and I never was able to get into MCC. UGH!!!
  4. Thanks devries. Here were my results after booting into Failsafe Mode: sh-2.05b# /etc/init.d/harddrake stop Stopping harddrake [OK] sh-2.05b# init 3 INIT: switching to runlevel: 3 INIT: Sending the process the TERM signal INIT: Sending the processes the KILL signal Start udev [OK] Starting dkms: [OK] Starting pcmcia: [OK] Checking for new hardware_ (blinking underscore line) And it just hangs there. I thought I had read elsewhere in this forum (forgot where), that I may need to stop other services, maybe wireless network (i.e. pcmcia above)??? I'm nontechnical and a bit confused. I appreciate your help. Richard L.
  5. I have a Toshiba 5005-S507 where I wiped out all my distros and partitions to start all over again. This machine is part of the 5000 series, so installation on it is the same as, for example, the 5205-S704 (which I also have, but not daring enough to put linux on it yet, due to Toshiba issues with linux distros). I installed MDK10.1OE on hda5 with Lilo on hda1 MBR ( generously made this partition 109 MB, since the machine has a large harddrive and this size doesn't harm anything). After installing 10.1, when I boot in graphical/verbose mode, the computer hangs on "checking new hardware". A friend of mine who hasn't gotten back to me by email, told me that he was successful with another Toshiba with the same problem by turning off some services. Q. #1. So, if I put the DVD in and choose "rescue mode", what specific commands do I use to turn off some services, and which services do I turn off, so that it will boot into KDE or any other DE or DM. All help will be greatly appreciated! And, in advance, thanks! P.S. DragonMage, how are you? Richard
  6. Thanks, Liquidzoo....Unfortunately, your link produced no results. As you can see from above (with two misspellings), this is a special Mandrake rpm. It should have been written as: mozilla-firefox-0.9.1-0.100.1mdk.i586.rpm. I also tried this in the search box, as well as Google's with no results. I'm sure I found out about the above rpm on this website, but I've searched and can't find it. Is there anyone that can link me to the discussion of the above, or who knows where to get it from? Thanks again, LiquidZoo. Richard
  7. This may be because I'm a club member, but I've forgotten from where I downloaded mozilla0firefox-0.9.1-0.100.1mdk.8586.rpm. Does anyone know the link for downloading it? I've already been to the club site and looked in the rpms there and couldn't find it. Thanks. (I know I could put it on a CD and transfer it, but I want to keep a record of where I download things.) Richard
  8. Hi chris_z and devries, I appreciate your efforts in helping me so far. chris_z : The box for "animate icons" was already unchecked for all, so that so far hasn't disenabled the bouncing, i.e. animated icons on the desktop when an app begins to launch. devries: Sorry to say that your thumbnail image isn't showing up in my Firefox on MDK10. So I'm unable to enlarge it to see what you're trying to show. Can you repost it, please? Thanks to both! Richard
  9. I did what you said chriz_z, but the little icon still bounces. Devries, I'm using MDK 10 OE with the latest KDE and there is no "startup" under Look N Feel of the KDE Control Center in mine.
  10. StarOffice does have a few more features than OpenOffice. I'd say OpenOffice is about 90% the same as StarOffice. Only a few things are missing that may not be noticeable to the average user (except for the templates). Corel Linux: the core team of Corel Linux became the Xandros team. It seemed Microsoft invested money to keep Corel from going bankrupt so that MS could prove to the U.S. Justice Dept. its MS Office wasn't a monopoly. At the same time, MS "pushed" Corel to get rid of its Linux division. So fundamental parts of Corel Linux are in Xandros. (This has been discussed on the Xandros forum, where you can find more details)
  11. Thanks, illogic-al and Sarissi. Illogic-al, if I recall before I uninstalled the nvidia driver, the keyboard and the mouse were also inoperable, so I don't think I could have done the keyboard operation as suggested. Also, could you list the kinds of problems you're having with the 2.6 kernel, please? Also, if I reinstall, is there somewhere a choice to choose the 2.4.x kernel instead of the 2.6.3 kernel? This may save a lot of future grief with NVIDIA side effects. Sarissi, how do I return to the monitor that MDK chose on installation? I don't recall what it was. Thanks guys for your input. Richard L.
  12. Well, I paid Mandrake Club so I could download MDK10 OE PowePak, and I have CD's 4 and 5. AND I checked the MD5 sums to make sure they were alright. I even burned two copies of CD 4. HOWEVER, when I'm asked to insert it to install something, neither of the CD 4's is recognized, so they are useless for installing anything with urpmi. I can open them, search through the long list of rpms, and double click on them. BUT, if the rpm needs to satisfy a dependency by installing another rpm from the same CD4 disk, it can't. SO in this case where you need two from CD4, it again is useless. It sometimes makes me wish I hadn't joined the Club, but just have downloaded the Personal Edition and used my broadband to get the rest. I expected RealPlayer, Macromedia Flash, Nvidia, etc. to be in the downloadable PowerPak for Club members, but they weren't. In additon, too many things are buggy in MDK Official Edition PowerPak, so I'm a little bitter that I wasted my money joining the club. Maybe when MDK 10.1 comes out in October/November I will change my mind. I do hope so, as I love Mandrake, this forum, and the P.L.F. site that is specifically for Mandrake's distros.
  13. Will this solve the logout, reboot problem when the odd screen with the squiggly lines freezes up my computer and I have to do a forced shutdown with the power button???  :bvc:
  14. When I downloaded the tar for 0.9 in my home directory and untarred it to a second folder, then ran it, it took over all my settings, including plugins from my 0.8. I didn't have to uninstall 0.8, nor import anything. It all happened automatically in MDK10 OE.
  15. Well, ever so slightly. The other one focuses on RunLevel 5 issues after I uninstalled the Nvidia driver. :bvc: From one Texan i.e Houstonian to the other. Thanks for the smiley, Dude!
  16. Unfortunately, the Gnome Office w.p. and spreadsheet haven't taken off like Ooo and StarOffice have. Those, like you, who really like them are happy, just as I am with Lotus SmartSuite. There are also some who use KOffice, and now some are using what is called TrendMaker (I think that is the correct name) which is a for-profit Office Suite in Linux. One or two distros are pushing it. But Ooo/StarOffice seems to be well ahead of the game in becoming the ubiquitous Linux Office Suite probably because of its exposure in all platforms: Windows, Linux, Solaris, Sparc, and even an attempt in Mac. Sun has done a good job in advertising/exposing it through PC Magazine, PC World ,etc. It is probably also the most capable Linux Suite that is compatible with MS Office in the business world, and thus for this reason (an unfortunate reason but a necessity) will prevail. Sadly, Richard L.
  17. I've tried several times to install the NVidia driver on my desktop, a Powerspec 8920 sold by Micro Center. I'm using MDK 10 OE PowerPak downloaded from MandrakeClub. When I try to logout or shut down, I get an ugly screen with silver and black squiggly lines. The computer freezes and doesn't shut down, even if I try CTRL +ALT +DEL. I have to do a forceful shutdown with the power button. Then when I reboot, I'm in runlevel three. After painfully reinstalling last week since MDK10 became completely hosed and unbootable, this morning (July 9th) I tried the newer driver that came out June 30th with the same results. Luckily I learned how to uninstall it with nvidia-installer --uninstall which was a "godsend". I also got back to runlevel 5 in MCC >Boot > Autologin > and Enabling "Launch the Graphical Login when the System Starts" with help from this forum in another thread. My monitor is a ViewSonic A90f+. The specs for my computer are: Pentium 4 2.40 GHz, 512 MB Ram composed of 2 -256 DDR266, two hard drives (all linux distros on the 2nd one, a Western Digital 120 gig) Video Card is an NVidia FX 5200 Plus (A Conqueror Card). The only choice for monitor in MCC is the ViewSonic A90f without the +. This should not make any difference since Nvidia 3d acceleration is working in Red Hat 8.0, Xandros 2.0, SUSE 9.0, and Libranet 2.8.1. So...what is it about MDK10 that conflicts with the NVIDIA driver???? Please help, because MDK10 is my primary OS that I boot into and I really want 3D acceleration to work! Richard L.
  18. A few days ago I went into KDE Control Center > Look N Feel > Icons > Advanced Tab and out of curiosity I enabled "Animated Icons". The result was that when launching an application, the miniature program icon that appears on the desktop bounces up and down as it lets you know the program is launching. Since I didn't like this bouncy affect, I unchecked it, and it is still unchecked (disenabled). However, I still have the bouncing icon on the desktop as the app launches. The bounce is so pronounced you'd think a professional basketball player was standing erect 7 feet tall dribbling a basketball! Am I in the wrong location to disenable this effect? If so, where do I go to? If you have a solution, I'd appreciate your reply. Richard L.
  19. Hey Spineynorman, Superthanks! In Mandrake 10 OE it is different: MCC > Boot > Autologin > "Launch the Graphical Login when your system starts" and "No, I don't want autologin" (unless you really do). There is no more Drakthis, Drakthat. I tried several options and Autologin was my last one. So for me it wasn't a logical place to put it. Maybe for others it is. I sure liked the MCC in 9.x much better in two columns. I hate the new one that is trying to mimic Widows 9x and XP's Control Panel...and not successfully so. Much obliged! (as my country North-Texas grandmother used to say from late 1880's to 1975). Richard L.
  20. Most likely the way to "unshade" the panel icon size opton is to boot as root to the red desktop and look at it. Yet I know that is not a concern for you. I'm really sorry that didn't help you. I'll ask next Wednesday evening at our weekly Houston LUG workshop. Maybe one of the "übergeeks", Linux geniuses if they have a solution. In the meantime, perhaps another can help you on this forum. -Richard L.
  21. Thanks, devries. I'm sure glad that as a Texan I know German. It and English really help me to decipher Dutch spelling equivalents and cognates (he-he). For others, here is the link to the screenshots: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?sho...=0entry125985 Here are the steps that I used which may help Newbies and other NonTechies like myself: I opened KDE Control Center > Periperals > Printers At the top-right, I highlghted my default printer HPDeskJet880C (it's actually 882 but same driver). Then on the bottom-right I clicked on Settings, then the tab "Driver Settings". Here I clicked to open the General Directory and highlighted "Printout Mode". This activated a field at the bottom of the PopUp Window where I highlighted "Draft Grayscale". I then clicked Saved and OK. Now if you wanted to, you could ALT +F2 to summon a Run...Command and type in KPrinter to do the same thing. QUESTION: I need to EASILY change back and forth from Draft Grayscale to Normal without having to open up Kprinter of KDE Control Center each time to change it. It should be as easy as in Windows: CTRL + P (or File > Print...) and clicking on Properties, but I don't see this option in KDE under Properties. Any answer for the question? Many thanks. Richard
  22. I may be way out of whack here, but my perception is that when MS used smart marketing strategies in the late '80's and '90's to bamboozle the coporate world, they knew that that would filter down to the home user. So when the "profit-driven" distros start making a headway into corporate, that will give great awareness that Linux exists and also will filter down to home use--PROVIDED that its features for home use are as easy as MAC's and WinXP's. They'll have to included easy 3D graphics support that really works well, better Games, easy use of Digicams, Cameras, MP3's, etc. and do like Turbolinux has just done, which is to include PowerDVD for Linux in their distro. Let's hope Mandrake will get into the act and include something like PowerDVD (which is great...much smoother than libdvdcss), and some of the other commercial software that is needed, or freeware equivalents that are just as good. I love the ease of K3B even better than Roxio and Ahead Nero..as an example of freeware. So I say this for the distros: The Race is ON!
  23. My apologies to you, LTD602. This DOES work in KDE in other distros, so it's not KDE's fault. They *do* allow changing icon size, too. It's that Mandrake has taken the liberty (as is their right) to heavily customize the Launch Menu (Start Menu). Try this: Go back to the file and delete your addition of MenuEntryHeight, so that the file is back to its original state. Then, right-click on top of Mandrake's yellow star in the blue square (Mandrake's Start Menu), then choose Menu Editor. In the new window, click on the "Menu Style" button at top-left. On the next PopUp Window, choose at the bottom "Original Menu"..the default for KDE. Log back out, then in (or reboot). Go back to the file you edited before and see if there is now an entry where you have MenuEntryHeight where you can choose your size for the icons. BTW, in SUSE9.1, the icons in the Launch Menu were too large for me, even though I'm an ancient "baby-boomer" (1946) and am now wearing trifocals. The Menu's large icons caused it to spread out into two columns, taking up more screen than I wanted it to, so I made it smaller. (I got the info from a thread at http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de) I'm curious to know if that works. I'm not a techie or a geek, but I'm trying nevertheless to be a contributor and helper since I've received tons of help from these wonderful and very polite members here who never flame. Let us know your results as it may help others OR so that others with more technical knowledge than I can "hop" in here to help you. Richard L.
  24. BACKGROUND: I have MDK10 OE Powerpak downloaded from Mandrake Club. I tried installing the NVIDIA driver for 3d Acceleration; however I wreaked havoc on attempting shutdown, so I did CTRL+ALT+F2 and killed X to go into init 3. I then uninstalled it with the command: nvidia-installer --uninstall, which worked correctly. PROBLEM: Now whenever I boot into MDK10, it boots only into runlevel 3 and won't allow me to boot automatically into runlevel 5. Everytime, I have to login in as user and then "startx". And when I want to shutdown or reboot, I get back into a terminal screen have have to login as root and type "shutdown -r now", shutdown -h now", or "reboot". This is becoming a real pain. Do I need to copy a file or log for further help? All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Richard
  25. The Corel website had this information when if first came out about 8 weeks ago. Try going again to their website. They may be standing by ver. 8 for several more months (such as until Dec. but who knows?) because they want to see what kind of response they'll get before they make a decision. Being the pessimist as I am (unfortunately), most Linux users probably are happy with StarOffice/OpenOffice or else are using Crossover Office, VMWare, or Win4Lin. With the latter two, you can install your Windows copy. I'm not sure if Crossover Office is compatible with Corel WordPerfect Suite or not. My all time favorite Suite is Lotus Smartsuite, ver. 9.5. It's a crime that IBM still (and maybe never will) make a Linux version since they are really into Linux. Furthermore, they've neglected SmartSuite the last three years. I think recently they gave in and switched most of their organization from SmartSuite to MS Office. What a shame! Just my American two cents worth. Richard L.
