  1. Well! Well! Well! Silly me!!! I went back into MCC to make sure I had installed all the required codecs and lo and behold what did I find? Mplayer wasn't installed, only the plug-in. I'm quite sure I had installed it but maybe I didn't pressed hard enough when I clicked it. Anyway everything is working now. It makes me wonder, however, which application was used for me to be able to view CNN.
  2. Hi everyone! When I am in PCLinuxOS I can watch and hear both CNN, BBC or CBC but when I am in Mandriva 2006 I can watch CNN but can only listen to CBC ( haven't tried to BBC but cannot watch it ). I use Firefox and I have MPlayer installed as well as; win 32 codecs, xine-win32, real-codecs, mplayer-plugins and xmms-alsa. If I go to CBC Halifax for example and I click on one of the 2 Listen to links on the right side MPlayer comes on then I choose the broadband connection and it buffers, connect to the server, buffers again and eventually I can hear the sound. If I click on the 3rd link then Mplayer plugin comes on also it buffers for a little while and then it says STOPPED. I tried right clicking and configuring but nothing works. If I go to CTV.ca and click on a link to watch I can get a web stream. Can anyone explain to me what is wrong with CBC or BBC or what I could do to make them work? I should repeat that they work in PCLinuxOS and Win XP. Thanks in advance! Réjean
  3. Good news everyone!!! I just changed the settings for the Mdk vga from "788" to "normal" and I can now boot into Mandrake. All I have to fugure out is Ubuntu and see if I can install Debian Gnu/Linux or Suse and I will be a happy pinguin. Thanks anyway! Réjean
  4. Hi all! I have a Penthium II (500Mhz), 256 Mb RAM with 2 hds. On the first I have installed XP then Mandrake 9.0 then Xandros and tried installing Debian/Gnu. On the 2nd hd I have installed Ubuntu. I used Lilo in Xandros and Grub in Mdk. I can boot in Xandros and XP but when I boot into Mdk it goes as far as Postfix and then the screen goes black. If I try booting into Ubuntu the kernel gets initiated, the Xandros Lilo fades and the screen goes black. If I reinstall Mdk then I loose everything but Mdk and XP. Could you have a look at my Lilo and Grub and tell me if you see something wrong? Lilo: boot=/dev/hda install=/boot/cboot.b message=/boot/splash.lilo timeout=300 map=/boot/map prompt fix-table lba32 read-only disk=/dev/hda bios=0x80 disk=/dev/hdc bios=0x80 image=/vmlinuz label=[]s_Desktop_2.0 vga=0xf04 root=/dev/hda8 initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.22-x1.gz append="rw acpi=on noagp " image=/vmlinuz label=Safe_Video_Mode vga=0xf04 root=/dev/hda8 initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.22-x1.gz append="3 rw acpi=on noagp " image=/vmlinuz label={}ure_(Expert) vga=normal root=/dev/hda8 initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.22-x1.gz append="single rw acpi=on noagp " image=/disks/ubuntu/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8.1-3-386 label=Ubuntu_4.10 vga=normal root=/dev/hdc1 initrd=/disks/ubuntu/boot/initrd.img-2.6.8.1-3-386 append="root=/dev/hdc1 ro quiet splash" image=/disks/mandrake/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.19-16mdk label=mandrake vga=788 root=/dev/hda6 initrd=/disks/mandrake/boot/initrd-2.4.19-16mdk.img append="devfs=mount hdd=ide-scsi" other=/dev/hda3 label=MS_W<> other=/dev/hda7 label=Linux_on_hda7 and here is my Mdk Grub: timeout 10 color black/cyan yellow/cyan i18n (hd0,4)/grub/messages keytable (hd0,4)/us.klt altconfigfile (hd0,4)/grub/menu.once default 0 title linux kernel (hd0,4)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6 quiet devfs=mount hdd=ide-scsi vga=788 initrd (hd0,4)/initrd.img title linux-nonfb kernel (hd0,4)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6 devfs=mount hdd=ide-scsi initrd (hd0,4)/initrd.img title failsafe kernel (hd0,4)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6 failsafe devfs=nomount hdd=ide-scsi initrd (hd0,4)/initrd.img title windows root (hd0,2) makeactive chainloader +1 title windows2 root (hd0,3) makeactive chainloader +1 By the way why is it that I have 2 Mdk partitions; a Mdk and a Mdk/boot? Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated! Rejean
  5. Hi all! Someone on the Xandros forum suggested running Konqueror from Run and it worked! Hurray!
  6. Hi all! I made a booboo this afternoon trying to mount some folders from XP sitting on a networked machine into my Xandros 2.0 as I had done successfully about a month or two ago ( this is a reinstall). I managed to mount "My Documents", "My Pictures" and a few more folders when the system appeared to have crashed. I rebooted and tried to go into Home but I got a message similar to this: "The application Xandros File Manager (XandrosFileManager) crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV)." No problem, I thought, I'll go directly into File Manager. I got a similar message. Ok!Then, I'll switch user to root. Did so and got something similar: "The application unknown (kxfm=client) crashed and caused the signal (SIGSEGV)." I clicked on the Backtrace button and got the following message following a long list of this message: "(no debugging symbols found)...(no debugging symbols found)..." Here it is: "0x41266a56 in waitpid () from /lib/libpthread.so.0 #0 0x41266a56 in waitpid () from /lib/libpthread.so.0 #1 0x4088c97c in KCrash::defaultCrashHandler(int) () from /usr/lib/libkdecore.so.4 #2 0x41265685 in __pthread_sighandler () from /lib/libpthread.so.0 #3 0x4149e5f8 in __libc_sigaction () from /lib/libc.so.6 #4 0x400e2178 in CFileSystemItem::GuessDriveType() () from /usr/lib/libmwn.so.3 #5 0x400e26de in GetFileSystemList(CFileSystemArray*) () from /usr/lib/libmwn.so.3 #6 0x416ce525 in CHomeItem::CHomeItem(CListViewItem*, CListViewItem*, CSMBFileInfo*) () from /usr/lib/XandrosFileManager.so.0 #7 0x4172eb8d in CViewManager::CreateViews() () from /usr/lib/XandrosFileManager.so.0 #8 0x41744bd3 in CViewManager::enableDefaultSettings(CView*) () from /usr/lib/XandrosFileManager.so.0 #9 0x416db47d in CMainFrame::CreateViews(QValueList<int>, Qt::Orientation) () from /usr/lib/XandrosFileManager.so.0 #10 0x416d584e in CMainFrame::CMainFrame(KApplication*, bool) () from /usr/lib/XandrosFileManager.so.0 #11 0x416d3475 in main () from /usr/lib/XandrosFileManager.so.0 #12 0x0804c881 in strcpy () #13 0x0804dbbb in strcpy () #14 0x0804e024 in strcpy () #15 0x0804ee4d in strcpy () #16 0x4148ae3e in __libc_start_main () from /lib/libc.so.6" Could somebody please have a look at it and make some suggestions so I can manage my files again. As you might be able to see I downloaded Firefox 1.0 and I can still use it. I tried a Solitaire game to see if it would work and it did. It seems that I can do thing but manage my files. This morning I went into the Event Viewer and here is what I get when I click on the HOME icon on the desktop, or on the FILE MANAGER icon that I added to the Quick Launch: Facility; Kernel Priority; Error Source; kernel Message; smb_errno: class ERRDOS, code 21 from command 0X80 Does that ring a bell? I have just read about 300 entries in a Google search for SIGSEGV , very few are related to "pthread". I did a search for "smb_errno: class ERRDOS, code 21 from command 0X80" and got about 200 lines of code. I am just one tiny notch beyond being a noob (newbee) as far as Linux is involved so try being not too academical, please. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Réjean
  7. Hi Padma! I followed your advice and it worked. It took me awhile to figure out how to mount Xandros but I did. I don't use Mdk because it has the tendency to freeze up on me. Xandros, on the other hand never does. So I'll keep on using Xn for when I have important things to do and Manrake for learning how a different distro works. Thanks for your help and thanks also to lawsonrc for his suggestion. Sincerely, Réjean
  8. Hi all! I have a machine running Mdk 9.0 and Xandros 2.0 connected to a Win XP 'puter via an ethernet connection. I just dowloaded the latest version of Open Office ( 1.1.3) from the OO source for any Linux (x86). I installed it (although I may not have all the Java that I could have used ). Nevertheless! Is there a way that I could transfer the download from Xandros to Mdk. (It took me over 5 hours to download the software using dial-up) and I would like to avoid another download if possible. Any suggestion? Réjean
  9. Hi all! I have a Penthium II, 500Mhz, 192 Mb of RAM, with a 40 Gbs IDE Western Digital HD with Mandrake 9.0 and Xandros 2.0 working fine and A 2.5 Gbs IDE Maxtor HD on which I have tried to install Suse 9.0 at least 3-4 times.I also have a S3 86365 (Virge) graphic card which has created a few problems when I tried installing Mdk and Xandros. When I try installing Suse it goes ok but when it tries rebooting to finish the installation GRUB comes in and then stalls at Stage2. The last time I couldn't even go back into Mdk nor Xandros ( I thought I would be smart and reinstall Xandros on top of itself but I lost everything in Xandros and had to start all the updates and Bookmarks and Address Books import). I have tried using Restore or Repair from the Suse cd and I could get a login (as root with a password that it accepted even if I had never set one in yet). Now when I start the machine the Xandros Lilo offers me to boot into Suse if I want to but I can only access the console mode. If I print:"startx" I get the following message: -bash:/usr/X11R6/bin/startx:No such file or directory -bash.exec:/usr/X11R6/bin/startx:cannot execute:No such file or directory When I try to get into /usr or other folders I am denied permission. I cannot "su" either for the same reason. When I am in Xandros I can open the File Manager and go into My Linux and ALL Files System and see and open Suse in a graphic mode but there is very little I can do (mostly from lack of knowledge) beside sharing folders. Now that I have restored the boot loader I have no problem opening Mdk but I haven't tried solving my Suse problems using it. I would rather wreck my Xandros distro (the last one with little to loose beside an install) than Mandrake. What do you suggest anyone? Réjean
  10. Thanks Ixthusdan! I'll wait until I get the installations cds for Xandros and/or SuSe and will keep in mind what you suggested! Greatly appreciated! Réjean
  11. Hi Ixthusdan! I like your suggestions. I think I'll give Xandros a larger /home partition and keep Mdk 9.0 just the way it is right now. I can access the net via Win XP on my main machine, I can see some of my files on XP also, being networked. Too bad I cannot see my Linux machine from the XP??? My current drives config are; /dev/hda1 Swap (249 Mb) /dev/hda5 / (2.9 Gb) /dev/hda6 /home (3.9 GB) .....the last 2 sizes maybe the space left. I'm not sure. I cannot access the machine right now........ with a second hd for Win 98 SE, something like /dev/hdc1 /mnt/windows (2.4 Gb) ....It's a 2.5 Gb hd anyhow. What do you think? Réjean
  12. Hi everyone! I have a machine running Mdk 9.0 on the main hd (40 Gb) with 5 gb for / and 5 Gb for /home. I want to install Xandros and possibly SuSe also. Someone suggested on another forum that I need only one Swap and one /home partitions that will work with all distros. They also said that I can use Parted to resize the /home partition but that I should make sure it is unmounted. I am a newbee and am afraid to unmount it not knowing how to remount it after I have resized. What would you suggest I do. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Réjean
  13. Never mind everyone! I managed to reinstall it on top of itself using RPMdrake! Everything is now fine. If only I could install A VERSION of Firefox any one it wouldn't matter if it is not 1.0. I have tried 0.9.3 tar.gz and 8.0.rpm. None works on my Mdk 9.0. Still have to figure out the dependencies. Rejean
  14. Hi everyone! I just installed Mdk 9.0 less than 2 weeks ago and the first time I opened Open Office it asked me if I wanted to register and I chose to remind me to do it later. I may have used it once or twice more (although I use it all the time on my XP machine. So much better than Win Office XP). Now my problem is that it doesn't open anymore. When I go into the menu and try to open it the Splashscreen comes on and nothing happens for at least 5 minutes and then a quick window referring to the registration shows up for no more than a second or so and disappears. If I right click on an empty part of the desktop and click on refresh the desktop the image goes away but a gray square persists until the little window shows up briefly. What should I do? I am a newbie with Linux. I've tried to uninstall Open Office using KPackage (although not as root) and reinstall it but I am denied. I really want to start using Linux full time but it has to have Open Office and Firefox and Thunderbird at least. KOffice for example is no more better than Word Pad and I am not sure what else there is for spreadsheet. Can I just fix the problem and then how or should I reinstall but then again how to uninstall it first? Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance, Réjean
