  1. We all know that - but you have to remember how much money M$ dealt out to hardware manufacturers to have them only make drivers for windows. And some modems (winmodems) only work in windows at all! We're doing pretty good considering. Check ATI's page, they have drivers you can download I believe if you have a 3rd party card powered by an ATI radeon chipset.
  2. I really like Guarddog. Are you sure it needs to be run every boot? I thought once it had been run the firewall rules were in place. If not, you can add the iptables line to your .kde/Autostart...
  3. I have NO idea what that last problem is. But Don't worry about the locked folders, your user does not have read rights to the locked ones owned by root, whereas others owned by root do give read perms to users.

    UT vs. UT2003

The america's army thread reminded me to ask: Seeing as I'm attempting to write a firewall protocol for UT, does UT2003 use the same ports? I wasn't even aware they'd come out with a newer engine; I just figured UT2003 came with more levels or something. Also - is the install the same procedure? Can't be - Loki's dead...
  5. Glad to hear you got it working man. It's also great to hear that the internet looks better! Funny, because it used to look worse. Mandrake 9.1 has some great looking fonts.
  6. Jessy Christo!!! I'm out! That's insane! I knew somebody must've thought to do that before, but damn! Well here's what I'll do - I'm going to decide which of those look the best/easiest and continue my list based on the most common things people want to do. Consider mine a quick reference for the masses.
  7. Are you logged in as a user or root at the time of said problems?
  8. UPDATE: OK - I got UT installed alright, turns out it was supermount that it didn't like. Mounted manually and it worked great. My UT protocol doesn't work yet. I'll be working on it tonight. The Q3 works, the UT will soon. I need playtesters for Q3 now; however, UT playtesters will only be needed when I get that protocol working (hopefully tonight).
  9. But where do you put that? Make a bash script, add it to the menu, then use that?? Can't be! Where's the config file for the keyboard?!
  10. You should post your wine configuration. I'm wondering if notes.exe is attempting to write a config file somewhere that only root (not user) has access to. You got wine working with XP on your system? I just get an error... (Not that I really need wine as you've seen from my thread of app equivs, I can now do everything)
  11. huuuhhhhhhhhhhhhh crap. There are better things, but mostly for linux to linux... but to use a linux box to control a PCAnywhere client? Either through wine (ugh - I have only successfully used wine for non-xp apps) or [anyone?]. I presume you're asking because the client already has PCAnywhere installed and now it's in some pickle factory in western Siberia?
  12. Totally Excellent! I forgot to mention - when sending me an e-mail for the code, include your icq# / msn name so I can contact you (I use gaim but I never remember my icq # by heart...) You'll have to e-mail me for my msn name too...
  13. Hi guys, thanks for the interest in this thread. I've worked my tucus off working on an addition for Simon Edwards' Guarddog Firewall Utility. I've coded a protocol for quake 3 and punkbuster that works (I play tested it like mad). However, I'd like to be extra sure by having others playtest it to be sure it wasn't a fluke with my machine/setup. If you are interested, e-mail me (check my sig) for the hack and instructions (and be sure to hit the above link to get guarddog - the best firewall utility IMO). I'd like 5-10 people, and upon confirmation of it working, will send it to Simon Edwards and he promised to implement it in the next release. I would ask that your quake 3 is already working and at least 1.31 because I'd like to send the code out tomorrow! Also - I have one for unreal tournament, but I can't test it because I can't install UT as it asks for the linux cd when all I have is the windows cd. If you have UT let me know and I'll include that hack as well. Plus if you have any tips about installing UT with the linux binary and the win cd... The tutorial on DOlson's page didn't work for me. Details I coded the protocol to use outbound udp packets only, as I am only interested in the utmost security. The only exception is the actual connection to the server you've selected to play on - that's obviously a bidirectional udp datastream.

    SBLive and Geforce 3

It would not be the expert install that would freeze, it's gotta be something now different in the bios. (And if I'm right, I feel he should then go on with the expert install once this weirdness is resolved - to allow for configuring the sound and removing any unwanted on-board sound). =============================================== OK - what did you change in the bios?
  15. frosterrj shouldn't mind - that's the board rules ;] paleo - is sound working on your toshiba laptop?
  16. I've been reading DOlson's howto, as well as responses to many people's ongoing SB issues, and started to wonder: Is running the real drivers better than ALSA? I'm pretty sure I'm just using the alsa drivers (thanks the Starting ALSA ... [OK] while booting) and if a song has too much bass it crackles a little. In mixer I already have treble/bass controls though, so are there advantages in sound quality to compiling the actual emu-tools and emu10k1 or whatever? Would surround be better? Right now I believe I do get surround in Xine / Ogle...
  17. Well, you can't have the two drives you want to use for a disc to disc copy on the same ide cable, it'll leave the last few songs with anomolies and slow the process down... I put one hdd with one cd on each cable (bootable hdd primary master and burner sec. master, dvd primary slave, swap drive sec. slave) Never had a problem... In fact, I used to make coasters with the ROMs on the same cable!

    3D Original Quake

Cool. I'm going to give your tutorial a shot. is twilight-20021124-3.i586.rpm the newest twilight?
  19. You want on. DMA stands for Direct Memory Access which greatly speeds up disk seek times. I may not be on the mark with what's wrong, but it certainly could be this. Playing music right off the harddrive means even while doing other things it must continually read the drive...
  20. I hear that thanks to mandrake you can now "urpmi gentoo" ! Just pop in CD3! But seriously folks.. Gentoo is just the single best way to understand linux. Having to build it teaches you a lot. I did it while still newbiesque and tripled my understanding overnight. (The installation instructions aren't that tough) I'm not running it right *now* but I'll quad boot with win, mdk, gen, and freebsd soon. The best of ~3.5 worlds! You're right, great for servers because you can optimize the whole system for a p4 or athlon xp or whatever, and great for speed demon desktop users... but if you're the init 3 type I like it too, not as much for speed, but the home feeling, and of course, portage kicks @$$. Mandrake is just the best for newbies. urpmi, the MCC, etc. Plus stuff working out of the box. Great fonts, etc. I like to run mdk so that I'm on top of things because my ultimate goal is to be able to help someone else use linux when they decide they've had enough, too. :D Wouldn't want them to turn back because of lack of support ;) Why do you think I'm here? The mandrake give-and-take relationship is simply unmatched. Oh, and SoulSe? Gentoo does have forums. :P

    3D Original Quake

Actually it's thanks to your site that I know about twilight! I just didn't know if it was 3D or not. looks awesome! :?: You mean quake 3 ? Is Dark Places for doom or quake?
  22. Keep this somewhere, you'll need it a few more times in the future I guarantee. Synchronization Horizontal: 30kHz - 110kHz Vertical: 50Hz - 160Hz 900NF Manual static
  23. Do you have DMA enabled for the harddrive? I have a feeling it's harddrive access times over CPU processing time... Try hdparm -d1 /dev/hda and see what happens.

    SBLive and Geforce 3

Before doing that expert install, hit DEL or whatever it is for your system to go into the BIOS. Disable both the onboard sound AND Plug'n'Play BIOS (P'n'P bios). Then do your expert install and configure the sound toward the end. Once you boot up, your volumes will be down all the way. Just open up mixer and turn em up. Shouldn't need to do anything else.
