  1. I'm in New Zealand so that aint possible. Oh well there are at least some advantages to living in NZ :) When i can think of them i'll tell you
  2. I'm in Auckland, Mangere so probably not aye? :( Damn but that sounds like an awesome deal :!:
  3. adsl certainly beats my old 56k, but its limited bandwidth my works adsl gets about 0.5 mbyte down and maybe 100kbyte upload but theres a usage cap so i don't download iso's from work. It takes about 34hrs to download the 3 iso's from home which isn't too bad i guess. another thing that makes the adsl 128k better than my old 56k is the heaps lower ping for online games :D It's a pity NZ is far more expensive than the US for highspped connections(well for me anyway)
  4. sweetie beats the crap out of the car :D
  5. if so then he wasn't a bad actor. People say he was the most annoying STTNG character but i think it was Troy, he was the next most annoying character. Ive seen his site before he has a sense of humor at least :D
  6. I am using Vegastrike with 8.2 so i must have got it infact im home now and just looked at my software manager I have libpng 2 and 3 installed libpng2-1.0.12-2.1mdk.i586.rpm is the rpm you probably need I got it off rpmfind.net just search for libpng2 and type mandrake for the system part of the search libpng2 was in mandrake 8.1 yes bluebeard but you can install it in 8.2
  7. tried that but the compiler freaked out small bit at the end of make: Dispense.cpp:137: confused by earlier errors, bailing out make[2]: *** [unix_obj/Dispense.o] Error 2 make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/john/Desktop/freevet/data/FreeVet-1.1.1/LIB' make[1]: *** [all] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/john/Desktop/freevet/data/FreeVet-1.1.1/LIB' make: *** [all] Error 2 [john@bobs FreeVet-1.1.1]$ literally more than 100 things the compiler found wrong with it in Dispense.cpp alone :( It looks like my only option is too try mandrake 7.2 , oh well i can live with that.
  8. FreeVet is a veternary clinic management application My sister owns a vet clinic For 5 clients the cost of the proprietry apps including the windows, windows server, mssql, and the software itself around $15000 NZ. A cheaper less functional one that runs of a firebird database (free) cost around $8000 NZ So i would have liked to use freevet as it would cut the software cost to a copy of quickbooks. So i guess i will muck around with it some more. I could code a intranet application with MySQL + PHP with a mixture of client side web browser and a little client side php-gtk(dynamic stuff, and printing) but it would take a couple of months of my spare time to setup and test and she wants it now now now :) What ever she gets i'll be the one who is called to fix any problems so i would prefer a linux option as once setup they are harder to break.
  9. it was a big improvement in speed, it should be pleasant for you.
  10. Tried installing a FreeVet rpm on mandrake 8.2, the rpm installs but i can't get it to work. I got a cant link to library libqt.so.1 so i simlinked the libqt.so.2.3.1 but then you get a error message about the freevet library calling unknow functions in the qt lib. So i looked on the freevet site, it was developed for qt version 1.44. Searched rpmfind.net and found libqt.so.1 came in a libqt1.45 package for backward compatibility apps in redhat 7.2 and 7.3 so i tried that rpm. Now the freevet app just segfaults immediately on execution. hmmm i have a 7.2 version of mandrake maybe i should install that on an old machine and try it again
  11. did you install using urpmi? I can't remember exactly what i had to do to get it going, but i do remember it was abit of a pain. I beleive i hunted down every dependancy on rpmfind.net urpmi list what packages you need. I'm no linux guru, my suggestion would be to remove the vegastrike rpms and start again using urpmi. place all the related rpms into a single directory and install from there. cd /directory with rpms su root password urpmi *.rpm iif there are any dependancies find them and put the rpms in the same folder, then urpmi *.rpm again untill there are no more dependancies. Like i said im no linux guru maybe someone else here has a better way. oh yes you might want to add some download sources to urpmi like the pfl site, http://plf.zarb.org/ details on how to do this are in the docs section of www.mandrakeuser.org, basically at the command line as su type these 2 commands. urpmi.addmedia plf ftp://plf.zarb.org/cooker with hdlist.cz for cooker urpmi.addmedia plf ftp://plf.zarb.org/8.2 with hdlist.cz for 8.2
  12. availible for download now, damn im at work and will have to wait till i get home to get it. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :!:
  13. i don't think my sndblaster pci128 is supported, i have been thinking about getting a sndblaster live and they aren't that expensive anymore so i may get one. But it sure would beat having to type out your insults
  14. do you need it for the trojans you are making, so they can connect to a central place from which you can specify your targets for a DDOS  Or maybe your just interested in irc? http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/text/rfc1459.txt
  15. Last night i install a mandrake 2.4.19 kernel rpm on my 8.2 box and it worked alright except i broke the nvidia driver and didn't recognise my dvd drive? I know that i would have to recompile the nvidia driver to work with the new kernel but would i still be able to keep the old nvidia driver so i could boot to the 8.2 standard kernel and use 3d as well? just wondering.
  16. I posted on the other forum that vegastrike wasn't that great, but now i have played it a bit more i am changing my mind. It would be possible to mod the game easily as all game data is specified in xml files, and it open source :D there is a multiplayer part and netcode is going to be developed. anyway i think it's worth checking out if you like the space sim games of elite style with more modern graphics. here's the link http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/ I found it not too easy to get it going but it works and there aren't too many bugs  beware around 75meg of downloads for you 56k'ers :!: The projects looking for artists and modelers if you happen to do either and want to help out gravy.
  17. Do you know if there is any info availible on recompiling the mandrake kernel, and setting it up so you can use the new and the old. If it is possible to remove some of the patched and replace them with others but still keep all the default mandrake settings?. Or are the low latency patches being included in the mandrake 9.0 kernel?, but i would still like to be able to recompile for athlon xp cpu.
  18. if glx gears and quake work fine then glxinfo should work as well, can't see why it wouldn't. very strange :!: Had a look a the man pages but no info there.
  19. quote DOlson PostPosted: Mon Sep 23, 2002 12:50 pm Post subject: Some people get really mad when you say that. "Well, Linux isn't for everyone." "What is THAT supposed to mean????" /quote hmmm best not to go there I know what i'd like to say to them but it is more along the lines of "Well, computers aren't for everyone".
  20. Linux gurus? Muahahahahahahahahahaha I wish Flash?, PDF? yuk! Whats wrong with good ol html spiced up with css!
  21. It would depend on what you will be serving. If everything is going to be html then you could get away with low spec hardware. If it was just html I would say a pentium 200 or equivalent amd k6, cyrix. 64 mb ram (more ram is always better) 4 Gb hdd should be heaps unless you have truckloads of html docs I would just do a min install with mandrake 8.1 with apache ( you may want mod_perl mod_php etc..) your documents go in var/www/html/ If you want to serve dynamic web pages and use a database blah blah this should be plenty 500mhz cpu 128mb ram hdd depends on how much you serve mandrake 8.1 or 8.2
  22. yes i have looked at freshmeat, and open office has label printing abilities, it has text rotate but i was unable to find anything about barcodes in OO. That doesn't mean there not there of course just i haven't found any documention on it.

    Geforce 4

ahh i see, i always buy the newest version when it comes out. trouble is it usually takes at least a month after release too come out in New Zealand. This time i wanted to download it so i could have it sooner, then buy it when it does come out after. As for setting up the geforce 4, im sure i could do it without having to pull out all of my hair, a third maybe :D I was just wondering if it was worth the effort of setting up scripts for launching the x server. It probably isn't as i get 70+ fps for q3a and unreal based games launched from kde2. Although when the linux client is ready for NWN, I hear it pretty resource intensive. I think i will go look up how to do it as i think i would like too know how even if i don't use it.
