  1. Hi all I am running Mandrake 10.1 and using the 2.6 kernel. However I downloaded the Netraverse installer and tried using the 2.6 and the 2.4 and it said that either kernel was compatible with Win4lin. I then went to the Mandrake site and downloaded a WIN4lin kernel 2.6 (something) but when I try to boot into it I get a "kernel panic" error. I have no idea of what I have done wrong, can anyone here give me an idea??? Thanks for your help in advance. 2. Hey God flesh You are right! I can read wmv files. But how do you get mplayer to be part of the desktop background?? Thanks
  3. Thanks Devries. What about Superkaramba being able to download .jpg or png files fom the net a la Gkrellkam??? Is that possible? And if so is there a good site where you could point me to learn how to it?? Thanks for your time.
  4. Hi, I have been a happy user of Gkrellm for ages now but I now want to do something that Gkrellm via Krellkam just cannot do. that is, I want to find a program that can live stream from a webcam on the net that streams in real time using the .wmv format. Is there a program out there that can do that straight to my desktop?? I have just started using Superkaramba but so far I cannot find that particular feature in it. Any ideas??? Thanks for any help
  5. Thanks everyone! This place is the best to train newbies like me with an inquisitive mind albeit ignorant! I'll take that the problem is solved and mark the thread solved - Artificial Intelligence
  6. Ramfree17 You're right!! You can't as I just found out while slowly destroying my MDK installation!! Oh well another install! But can you explain to me what you mean by a Vanilla version??? Does that mean compiling a new version of Openoffice from source??? Please excuse my noobiness is showing!!
  7. Thanks for the reply. But excuse my ignorance......what command should I try to add this particular CD as an urpmi update?? Sorry if I am missing smething obvious, but it doesn't seem too obvious from where I'm sitting. Thanks
  8. Hi I have just uninstalled MDK 10.1 and gone back to MDK 10. I find that it the earlier version is much more suited to my computer for some reason. I still use the 2.6 Kernel but the latter version gave me many headaches. ANYWAY, is there a way of updating OpenOffice from the latest CD's??? I would like to use the latest version which is on the 10.1 CDs. can anyone help me to know which is the easiest way if at all possible??? Thanks
  9. I had one of those adsl modems and I had NO probs with it but there was a few procedures I had to go through first. Report back if you are still having probs!
  10. Well Yves All I tried to do (unsucessfully I may add) was try to format the DVD via a terminal. I forget the command that I used now, but it was one that I read somewhere to format a DVDrw to packet writing. All I have now is a couple of DVDs that cannot be read in any DVD Burning program or any DVD player or writer. I don't like giving in so I don't want to throw them out. But I don't know where to start to even try and resurrect them. Any ideas will be very much accepted!!!
  11. Is there anyone out there with ANY ideas that may help me??? Thanks
  12. Hi again fellow linux groovers I experimented with packet writing a few weeks ago with both CDs and DVDs without too much success and eventually gave up ........a loser! However, the DVD RWs that I was trying to format can no longer be identified by K3b or any other DVD burning program that I have installed. Now, I would really like to be able to resurrect these DVDs rather than throw them away. Can anyone give me any ideas of what I might be able to do or approaches to take??????????? Thanks for any help, it is much appreciated. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  13. Thanks for the help I have it all going again now!
  14. Thanks LZ No I hav'nt been playing with Menudrake. Actually I cannot remember what I did to cause this one. All I can think of is Mplayer would install but not open. I uninstalled and reinstalled Mplayer a couple of times, that's all. But when I run that command that you give me it sticks on Running method: /etc/menu-methods/simplified/gnome And won't go any further. But by running it I have "Multimedia" back on the menu in KDE but that's all. Any more ideas??????? HELP!!
  15. Hi all, I have lost all of my programs from my start menu in both KDE and Gnome desktops???!!! I am running MDK 10.1 and I am at a loss as to how or why this has happened. If I run kde-config I get the new window with absolutely nothing in it like not ONE icon!!! Can anyone give me a clue as to what I can do?? thanks in advance
  16. Hey Thanks heaps Smurfy!!! I'll give it a go
  17. Hi all, I am looking for a guide of how to set up a terminal I think it is called or a port? Where my kids can use a computer in their bedroom which is really only a port to a server that I have. Do you understand?? The kids computer would have no hard drive and it would be connected via the network to a more powerful computer in my office. I know that it can be done but I don't know the terminology to do a search. they have an old 486 but it is really getting OLD!!! and I thlought that this may be a better option than trying to find a 2nd hand cheap computer. Any ideas????
  18. I am not 100% sure yet. I am still sussing out the prog. I have tried to get it to stream over the network to no avail and then the next thing I know it is doing this?? I'm not even sure what it was doing because there was no obvious gui opened. Maybe it was streaming 24 hrs later?? I have to work out how to use it properly before I can answer your question properly.
  19. Actually, I only downloaded it last weekend as I stumbled on it via the net. I am/was very impressed with what it can do especially the converting of one type of video files to another and the speed and qwuality in which it does that! I had never heard of anyone mentioning it for this use. All I have heard about since I have been using Linux for video conversion is transcode or mencoder. Both of which hav confounded me or let me down with the lack of quality that it has produced. Anyone else out there use VLC???
  20. Hey Thanks a lot!! It turned out to be wxvlc Can you tell me what that is?? thanks
  21. Hi I am running MDK 10 Official with all the updates and I have an AMD 2600XP processor. I have no probs with computer atm or the running of the system. However, quite often I look at Gkrellm and the processor is peaking around 99% for no apparent reason. I check everything and nothing unusual is running in the background and as far as I can tell there is no process or program that is setting it off. I am running the 2.6.3-7 kernel . Can someone steer me in some direction as to what may be causing this please?? I know that it is probably a stab in the dark, but I have no idea where to start. Thanks for any help.
  22. Firstly, I apologise if this has been posted before but I cannot get a clear answer to my question with what I have read everywhere. Some of the reason for that is my own ignorance I think!! I have an up and running Mandrake 10.003 official system running with 3 partitions, One for / one for swap and /home I am seriously considering trying to einstall the lot in Raid0 format. Only, I'm unsure that I actually can!!!??? I have an Albatron MB with sata raid and two Western Digitals H/Ds Can anyone tell me whether I can run Mandrake 10 via Sata raid or not?? I am happy to read if someone can show me where there is an "How to" But I cannot find one at the moment. Albatron only surplies Winblows drivers, and when I did try a few months back I got nowhere out of ignorance. Thanks for any help. Peppercorn [moved from Installing Mandrake by spinynorman]

  24. Hi I am running Mandrake 10.02 and dual booting with XP. I hav'nt used XP for ages but the other day I needed to get in and when I chose it from my Lilo screen all I got was a blank screen with a flashing cursor. I have installed a new kernel, but that is all I can think of that may play around with Lilo. Can someone help me in any way of tackling this problem??!! Thank you

    K3b and DVD-R ?

Firstly, I am no expert! BUT I do use K3b with success burning DVDs. I have had to go to "Settings" "Configure K3b" "Devices" and scroll down to "cdrdao driver" and choose generic or generic mmc I also burn at 1 speed even though I should be able to burn at 8x with my DVD The other thing I have found which I think is real important!!! IS some DVD media just WILL NOT BURN WITH MY DVD BURNER" either in Linux or Windows. This has happened to me quite a bit with different brands. So I have had to be very choosy with what I buy and it makes all the difference. I hope this may get you going!
