  1. In my "career" I have bought 3 PCs the other 60+ I have built or have rebuilt etc. One of them was a laptop (try building one of those) the other 2, one (my first real pc, other than the compaq 386/33's that I got at a local junk dealer) was a Packard Bell, which wast bad at all despite the reputation PB has or had. The other I got at Circuit City for 180$ while I worked there, It is a HP, same as the laptop, HP has been GREAT. If I were to buy another computer that was not an Apple it would be a HP. As for Tech support -- Who needs that except for hardware replacement?
  2. Well I'm not MacGyver, and I am married. The Avatar is of Colonel Jack O'neill of SG-1
  3. I have been messing with acpi and klaptop. I have gotten acpi to work. I told the computer to hibernate. It did, but now when I start the computer it starts to resume from the hibernation data but then reboots itself. It will stay in this reboot cycle until the computer is powered off. How can I remove the hibernation data (assumingly) in the swap partition?
  4. should there be an Icon in mcc for an applet to control the kernel modules that are loaded at boot time? Such as ACPI or agpgart?
  5. I have X running fine but I am getting 60-120 fps out of the the machine, I am trying to get hardware rendering support. The driver that comes with mdk gives me about 60 fps. others with the same card have reported as high as 400 fps. I have installed the specific drivers for the video card (s3 savage twisterK) but to get a better framerate I need to get dri running properly which involves initializing agpgart and loading the chipset drivers. The main reason for this is for me to get winxp off the machine. (currently on it only for dvd videos, linux is dropping frames)
  6. I knew i didnt want to recompile the kernel, just didnt know how to word the question. What I am needing to do is get agpgart working so that I can get DRI working (for 3d acceleration). I also need to load drivers for my chipset (which I dont know which drivers they are, need help with this too).

  8. I want to configure the kernel on MDK 10.0 on this D$%n laptop, specifically I want to see what I can do about loading agpgart. Anyone help? I have checked in mcc under sustem but there is nothing listed about kernel config, am I missing a package?
  9. guess so, a simple browse of their ftp server shows that mandrak-devel is non-existant it should be ftp://carroll.cac.psu.edu/pub/linux/distr...inux/devel/10.0 just a fyi
  10. Could this be why I get: [root@localhost jason]# urpmi kacpi ...retrieving failed: curl failed: exited with 9 or signal 0 Installation failed, some files are missing: ftp://carrol.cac.psu.edu/pub/linux/distributions/mandrake-devel/contrib-stable/1586/kacpi-0.6.3-0.rc7.2mdk.i586.rpm You may want to update your urpmi database ftp://carrol.cac.psu.edu/pub/linux/distributions/mandrake-devel/contrib-stable/1586/kacpi-0.6.3-0.rc7.2mdk.i586.rpm ...retrieving failed: curl: (9) Couldn't cd to mandrake-devel [root@localhost jason]# I have also tried with the --wget option at the end and get similar results: ...retrieving failed: wget failed: exited with 1 or signal 0 Installation failed, some files are missing:
  11. You could reset ??? I dont follow exactly what you are talking about resetting. I may try this fbdev thing tonite. Ill post what I find. Thanks for another lead.
  12. Thats the thing, I dont have any settings in bios on the laptop that I can change.
  13. I just made my machine linux only on accident. Does that count? I have MDK 10.0 installed now, and XP Pro. I cannot boot to XP pro, this is the second time that mdk 10.0 has been on this machine. The first time I had 9.2 and updated with the 10.0 repository using urpmi. When I try to boot to windows it tells me that ntloader is missing press ctrl alt delete to restart your computer (and the screen has about 15 random characters on it in random areas of the screen) I have tried booting from a 98 boot disk and using fdisk to clear the MDR but it does the same thing as before it just doesnt go through LILO first. Can anyone help with this? I can still get my data which is the big thing but until I can get 3d acceleration out of the savage card on the laptop Xp is my only way of watching dvds.
  14. You might run into a product activation nightmare.... wait a minute thats windows not *nix. Sorry about that, just had to put that one out there. as for the fact that the original board is an nForce board did you install the nVidia drivers? I would think that if you did then you might have some problems with the kernel on the new system board, but as I am not a linux guru *yet* I dont fully know.
  15. you know what? last night when I was typing one of my suggestions I thougt it could be a firewall issue but I quickly overlooked that possibility while I was typing. B) Cool thing that you did not end up reinstalling. I read someones post (dont know where or when) that said that if you need to reinstall linux just to connect to the internet things are extremely messed up and most problems can be fixed with a little tinkering. Anyway, congratulations!!!
  16. post the output of the route command as root, then try the previous command but change the ip address of the gateway to the one that works in windows. then try to ping 209.34.26.254 ie: route add default gateway 209.34.26.254 netmask 255.255.255.0 dev eth0
  17. The suggestion I made was taking down and bringing up eth0 (trying to see if this would help you get good network settings using dhcp) and then trying to ping your gateway (your gateway is the router or other device that your computer goes to when trying to reach the internet). Unfortunately you could not get a response from your gateway, since no response from your gateway you wont get a response from your dns server and also no response from any server on the internet. This does not mean that we cannot get you on the internet with this computer. Some more questions, I beleive you said you have a dsl line right? if so how do you connect in windows? do you use whats called pppoe? if not do you use whats called dhcp or automatically assign network settings? try this in a console: route add default gateway 209.34.30.254 netmask 255.255.255.0 dev eth0 then try to ping 209.34.30.254
  18. try taking eth0 down then bring it back up, after this is done see what happens when you try pinging your local computer then try pinging the gateway that your tech support gave you, then if that works try pinging the nameserver addresses. ie: ifdown eth0 ifup eth0 ping 127.0.0.1 ping 235.23.23.1 <-whatever ip address tech support gave you for your gateway ping 235.20.21.1 <-whatever ip address they gave you for your nameserver (dns)
  19. are those club sources listed in your config?

    ATI cards

I have the 7500 in my desktop and I have no problems switching between an X session and a console. But mine being a 7500 may be the issue (like ajcecil said: "it uses the open-source DRI drivers included in Mdk10 CE")
  21. Well I can use the 7500 with the generic Radeon driver. I just wanted to know if there was a more specific or specialized driver for it that would offer better (if possible) performance. Thanks.
  22. BTW (maybe this should go in a different thread) anyone know how to get tab completion to work in bash?
  23. Well, I have suse 9.0 installed on my laptop. Does anyone know an easy way to get KDE 3.2 and the 2.6 kernel installed? I checked YOU but all that was listed was security updates. BTW does anyone else besides me not like the idea that suse doesnt put out a pub version of their distro untill it has been on the store shelves for a long time. Whats the deal with that?
