Not to be to much of a geek here but have the fun is getting Linux to work. And just by working out any little bugs you come across you will be learning tha Linux enviroment at an accelerated pace while having fun!

I killed that second error by upgrading to gnome 2.8. I've seen people with similar probs on other boards that cured there errors by upgrading to gnome 2.8 if they were running Mandrake.

I use a PSC 2510 all in one. I can get the network printing up and running with hpoj and using ptal-init setup. But in order to use the scanner and fax I have to install hpijs from source and follow hp's setup. After that everything works like a charm. Without doing much research (sometimes I get a bit lazy) I think hpoj is the print driver and hpijs is the front end for xsane.

I'm just guessing here but can you do it with GConf?

Mike post how you fixed it so others that might have the same prob can see how you did it.

there is an rpm.mdk version but it isn't as up to date as the source file.

just untar the file and open the folder and there will be an install text

if memory serves me correctly, at sourceforge there is an install tutorial I think.

not unless there is an update for urpmi, but it doesn't take to much time just to make sure. I usually do whenever the thought hits me.

I would leave the older kernel on there just in case you have to boot to it in an emergency.

If you go to MCC and click on boot I think the first screen that comes up is to confirm which bootloader you are using then the next screen shows your kernels. Just click on your new kernel and set it to default and you should be good.

If you have never done this before take your time and run through it slow you don't want to make a silly mistake and have to go in and fix a broken boot loader.

I agree. I just wanted to make sure he was running that command and editing.

don't you have to run /sbin/lilo after editing lilo?

I'm a gnome guy but I think you will either have to wait for Mandrake to release to the public in a few weeks or get the source code from the KDE website and build form source.

Don't forget to keep checking over the next few weeks for the tree to be completed.

If it's from a trusted ftp site (e.g. from easy urpmi ) go ahead and say yes it usually just meens the tree hasn't been synced with Mandrake yet.

You can say yes, the tree isn't in sync yet because the full tree hasn't been mirrored.

You can remove your cd sources now since all your stuff is 10.1 OE or just keep em in for kicks. But everything looks like it's running great to me.

linux does support 64 bit. In fact many distros such as our loved Mandrake have been for awhile.

check the md5 checksums to make sure it was a good download

if that checks out good it might be a bad burn

also your booting from the cd's right?

No this drops you into a fullscreen console. It's almost what you would get if you booted up without the X server. This way if urpmi updates or upgrades xorg and/or your DM such as Gnome or KDE (which it most likely will with this update/upgrade ) then there won't be any complications with X and your DM.

The screen your talking about is not the failsafe boot it is the root boot! (say that twice )

I just wanna say this again ----- this will be upgrading your system, it worked fine for me but some people have had the upgrade really mess up their system.

Back up your important stuff just in case it does or be like me and just do it and if it screws up your system go have a beer, yell at yourself in the mirror then do a clean install of CE and run through all this again and chock it up to living on the edge!

after you set the sources and urpmi urpmi

you will type urpmi --auto-select in the console, then it will download a whole crap load of updates and upgrades because remember its not just updating your stuff it's loading everything

there are a few things left in the tree that haven't been mirrored yet just read my earlier posts

your start up screen will still say Community -- that's because that file is still not in the tree ( may be added to the tree in the next week ) but all the other core files for Official that have been put in the tree will be installed.

also urpmi --auto-select does not install the latest kernel by default , but you can do that later in MCC after the upgrade

when you finish setting up your sources type urpmi urpmi in the command line to make sure the urpmi programs themselves are up to date.

it's just like typing urpmi mozilla only your urpmi'ing urpmi ( say that 10 times fast )

If you really want to move to 10.1 CE instead of wainting a week or 2 for official then load up CE and go to " Easy Urpmi " and set up your sources ( don't forget to ---- urpmi urpmi ---- when you finish )

then as root type init 3 , then log in as root and type urpmi --auto-select

This will update and upgrade 10.1 CE to the latest tree ( remember this will load everything! )
