  1. I for one will be buying Suns desktop if it can drag and drop to a floppy without a user knowing what mounting is and if I can copy(Ctrl+C) in one program, close said program, and paste(Ctrl+V) into another program... Hopefully Sun can bring the professionality to this linux desktop that has been so sorely missing. Love the eye candy too! It's the sort of thing that sells to marketing fools (ie the guys (and girls) who spend most IT budgets). Keep it up Sun.
  2. Yay! Check it out at the gimp 2.0 homepage! Running windows 2000 at work but have managed to convince the powers that be that as web developers we don't need photoshop for the simple things. Of course half of the people at work baulked at the UI of 1.x, but with GTK2.2 installed, Gimp 2.0 it looks like it belongs!! Just looking for a Mandrake rpm now (getting a bit bored with compiling, why does everything seem to be Fedora these days?) Any way, congrats to the Gimp 2.0 contributors, it looks great (haven't used it much yet, but hopefully the improvements weren't just skin deep).
  3. Argh, added paths to .bash_profile in my home directory and KDE is back to knowing what bash knows.... B)
  4. I think there must be a problem with my KDE installation or I'm just not getting someting.... From within KDevelop 3 (started form console) if I get this: [toxaq@toxaq src]$ echo $CVSROOT [toxaq@toxaq src]$ If I do the same thing from a terminal window I get [toxaq@toxaq src]$ echo $CVSROOT /usr/local/cvsrep [toxaq@toxaq src]$ Any ideas why this would be?
  5. Decided to upgrade to Kdevelop3. I don't know why I toture myself. Searched for a Mandrake rpm to no avail. Kdevelops site under binaries listed 'cooker' for Mandrake... Installed from source which took aprox 3 hours to compile. Then followed the strange advice at the Kdevelop homepage. Did the export thing and I can run Kdevelop from command line as an ordinary user. Added the item to my KDE menu (KDE 3.1) and it doesn't work. I get the plugins not found error that you get if you don't export the paths as described in the web page above. I don't understand why the exported path would not be available to KDE when it is available in the command line, or is it that crazy kbuildsycoca command that is not working correctly.... I have tried running that in every directory I can think of. If anybody can tell me what I'm doing wrong or point me in the direction of a mandrake 9.1 rpm for Kdevelop3 I'd much appreciate it.
  6. Looks nice... Java Desktop Environment Based on SuSe, Gnome 2.4... hopefully it'll automount cds and floppies (a true desktop environment).... Check it out... only US$50 till June....
  7. Thanks for the reply emetib. I think the problem is this PC is attached to a wireless bridge by a CAT5 cable but sometimes the signal goes down for the bridge and when this happens during login to the machine it gets screwed up. However zeroconf does a terrible job of doing nothing and sets up a dodgy 'network adaptor', eth0:9... it even adds a non-local IP address. I don't really feel like learning more about another technology so I'd like to just uninstall it as I'm already running a DHCP network... Guess I'll just suck it and see. Cheers.
  8. Hello, I've recently installed an adsl wireless router which also acts as a DHCP server. However I've had a problem with one of my linux boxes when I got eth0:9 configured with the IP address 169.254.119.126 and no plain eth0 configured after startup one time.... Since I don't want to have to answer questions from my flatmates about why they can't access the internet ( because there is no local network if this happens), I'd love to solve this. Looking at the logs shows that zcip installed this, which is the zeroconf binary. I figure since I'm running this box as a DHCP client I don't need zeroconf so I can just uninstall it? Anyone any wiser? Thanks in advance...
  9. To resolve by name you will need to edit the /etc/hosts file... there is a difference between machine name in samba and resolveable name when pinging IPs. Big topic.... somebody here will no more than I do...
  10. Same problem I found last night. Trying to change eth0 to DHCP... bah, there goes the modem. Recreated symbolic link to /dev/modem/ but also had to chnage (in KPPP) ppp authentication to PAP/CHAP because MCC had changed it to script... I was getting pppd daemon died unexpectedly, error 16. It was getting connect, then pppd would die... Very frustrating, not a great fan of mandrake control centre at all!
  11. The problem I see is that IBMs court case doesn't roll around to 2005 and so there is just a load of high profile fear uncertainty and doubt for people who may not have a better understanding of the bigger picture. On the register they reported that 12% of people would change there decision of Linux roll out because of SCOs antics (badly abbreviated)... I would like to see more of the anti-defamation lawsuits. I especially lked one of Australias Linux group raising SCOs defamatory baseless remarks with the commerce commission. I realise lawsuits are a last resort but there is a large amount of damage being done... :(
  12. Well, I'm just a amazed that he wouldn't want to protect the value of his trademark... Personally I'm surprised by the lack of separation/distance that people haven't been putting between themselves and SCO... How come the partners of United Linux haven't done something? Very confused... :!:
  13. Wow, a bargain $699 if you get in before October 15th.... then $1399... How come Linus hasn't revoked SCOs right to use the Linux trademark in one of the products names (LKP)?
  14. Cheers, but as I'm on dial up I don't really have any easy way of getting it... I bought the Linux Format UK July DVD edition which had the full AA on it... However there are two Mandrake boxes in my flat and one of them is mine with a nice garphics card and proper set up but no connection to the internet, the other is the flats internet computer with rubbish bits that's just used for email etc... As AA required internet connection to register I set up the wrong machine.... However, I did learn enough to properly install my nvidia drivers and get Tux on my computer so not a waste in the end...
  15. Hmmm..... ... looks like it's just a rubbish graphics card...
  16. OKay I just thought I'd install Americas Army because I had it on DVD and I'm trying to get other people into Linux and I didn't have any games in 3D to show them. So it installed lovely (nice to see a real installer) and then I went to run I get Couldn't find matching GLX visual I did loads of searching and found that after running glxinfo that my card wasn't running in Direct Rendering mode... I added the load dri option to my Xfree86-4 config file and added a section for the dri mode. Nothing has changed though after restarting X. There seems to be heaps of information about ATI radeons but not about the IIC... Can anybody point me towards info for the IIC or maybe what I'm doing wrong? This is the section on my card.... Section "Device" Identifier "device1" VendorName "ATI" BoardName "ATI Mach64 3D Rage IIC" Driver "ati" Option "DPMS" EndSection
  17. Thanks for the guarddog link static... I´m now stealth to grc now which is always nice to know... has anyone got real time firewall alerts aka zonealarm? Hold that thought I better go search...
  18. I had to download the open office english pack to get my Open Office to work. For some reason my disks only had the Catalan version on it and it was a broken install.... I found somewhere that these two pieces of the puzzle were missing: OpenOffice.org-help-en-1.0.2-7mdk.i586.rpm OpenOffice.org-l10n-en-1.0.2-7mdk.i586.rpm Search for them on rpmfind.net and try installing them... Sorry no advice on your other problems, good luck though... ( you won´t need it though as someone here will be able to help you)

    MYSQHELL!

Okay don´t worry I think I found it here I was searching for mysql not libmysql....

    MYSQHELL!

I am having a problem trying to compile with mysql too. I have just ´upgraded´ to 9.1 which changes mysql from 3.23 to 4.01... that wouldn´t be too bad if I could find how to install the development libraries so I could link my application to it. Where can I look to find the dev libraries... I tried to remove mysql 4 and step down to 3.23 but got a segmentation fault when trying to start it... All ideas appreciated.
  21. Yeah! The system worked beautifully, installed when windows couldn't and I was very happy, till I tried to open an Office document and connect to the internet!
  22. Yeah, that's my warning. If you use the two cds that came with June(?) LinuxFormat magazine thinking that you are going to get a complete install well you are not. You might be able to connect dialup using Mandrake Control centre as root but otherwise there is no dialler so download the third cd or get the dvd version (where possible).... Edit: Oops apologies for the first post being misleading, the statement only relates to the two CDs that came with the Linux format magazine as the cover discs, nothing to do with the Mandrake download discs. 8)
  23. Just a note not a question for anyone searching about this issue: The 2 cd set of Mandrake 9.1 is a little bit dodgy. :( So far I have found that Kppp is missing ( no dialup) and Open Office is only available in Catalan and doesn't work at that. So if you are trying to set up your flat so that they can surf the net and write documents you will want to get teh DVD version or download it. Here is a link to solutions to these problems on linuxformats forum: linuxformat thread
