  1. Well, I figured I'd update this thread so people would know what's going on. Last night before I installed mandrake 10 I went into my BIOS and turned off pnp os. After I finished the install I booted into mandrake and my connection worked just fine
  2. well, I might as well jump in on this thread since it pretty much pertains to a question I was about to ask. I was wondering about upgrading to gnome 2.8 but since it's still in cooker and could mess up my system I think I should hold off till I'm more comfortable with linux. I'm guessing getting gnome 2.6 should be no problem though. I'm guessing I could do this through urpmi (not sure, I just started using urpmi yesterday) and if so what would be the command. Wlould a simple urpmi gnome work or would urpmi upgrade gnome Sorry if my question seems obvious, I"m still learning :P

Thanks for the info man, I was worried there for a minute

so I would use ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributions_Li.../Mandrake/RPMS2 for updates ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributions_Li.../Mandrake/RPMS3 for main ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributions_Li....0/contrib/RPMS for contrib correct? also my "speed" is between 4000-5000 while downloading...I"m hoping that doesn't mean 4k-5kbps

I"m using the mcc media manager as we speak and I"m updating the contrib to one that you listed...is it normal or it to take about an hour to download hdlist2.cz?
  6. thanks patrick, that worked just fine
  7. oops, sorry pmpatrick, I should've mentioned that I"m using gnome (the version that comes with mandy 10 ) I've tried right clickiing on the desktop but to no avail for adding it. I can navigate to /mnt/windows via epifany. Any ideas on how to get it mounted on my desktop in gnome?

Would I just edit my urpmi.cfg file to use that ftp addy you listed above. Would I replace the current ftp addy in contrib, updates, and main witht the one you listed? Is it really that simple of a fix? I hope so :D
  9. hmmmm, I have a ATI 9500 seriers onboard. I"m guessing my plain ol "Radeon" setting XFdrake may not be cutting it. I checked the list further and the closest thing I saw was a 8500 series. I'm not sure if I"m on the right track or not, if I am I have no clue what to do from here
  10. WEll, I went to XFdrake and did some configuring: for graphics card it's showing ATI radeon Monitor: custom Resolution: 1152x864 24bpp I'm not sure if those settings are perfect but I think they are probably right ( I have ATI) here is a screenshot, look how huge gaim is :(

ok, I went to this site to get my urpmi up and running. I used the Pennsylvania mirrors since a couple of the others were getting curl errors. So, it looks lI got the urpmi installed correctly. I updated it as well. So, I can download packages and such...I just grabbed firefox, and it grabbed version 0.8 so needless to say it's grabbing OLD stuff. Here is my urpmi.cfg plf ftp://ftp.free.fr/pub/Distributions_Linux/plf/mandrake/11.0 { hdlist: hdlist.plf.cz with_hdlist: hdlist.cz list: list.plf key-ids: caba22ae } updates ftp://carroll.cac.psu.edu/pub/linux/distributions/mandrakelinux/official/updates/10.0/RPMS { hdlist: hdlist.updates.cz with_hdlist: ../base/hdlist.cz list: list.updates key-ids: 22458a98 update } main ftp://carroll.cac.psu.edu/pub/linux/distributions/mandrakelinux/official/10.0/i586/Mandrake/RPMS { hdlist: hdlist.main.cz with_hdlist: ../base/hdlist.cz key-ids: 70771ff3 } contrib ftp://carroll.cac.psu.edu/pub/linux/distributions/mandrakelinux/official/10.0/contrib/i586 { hdlist: hdlist.contrib.cz with_hdlist: ../../i586/Mandrake/base/hdlist2.cz key-ids: 78d019f5 } Not sure if you guys can see what is wrong. Anyone have any ideas of what's wrong, I know it's obviously an error on my part I just have no clue what I have wrong.
  12. ok, I can't seem to get my 2nd hdd (hdb1) which is ntfs mounted on my desktop. I keep all my music files on that drive. Here is my current /etc/fstab /dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 /dev/hda6 /home reiserfs notail 1 2 none /mnt/cdrom supermount fs=udf:iso9660,dev=/dev/hdc,--,codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1,nosuid,ro,umask=0,nodev,exec 0 0 none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount fs=udf:iso9660,dev=/dev/hdd,--,codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1,nosuid,ro,umask=0,nodev,exec 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hdb1 /mnt/windows ntfs umask=0,defaults 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0 I have supermount enabled. But, I also tried manually mounting the drive: [root@localhost mark]# mount -t ntfs /dev/hdb1 /mnt/windows mount: /dev/hdb1 already mounted or /mnt/windows busy mount: according to mtab, /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/part1 is already mounted on /mnt/windows [root@localhost mark]# I'm not sure if my fstab is misconfigured or what I"m doing wrong. Any help will be appreciated.
  13. Well, I see some ppl have repsonded to this thread since I've read it last :P Well, some updates on what I've been up to. I've been using SuSE 9.0 and 9.1 since and it automatically detects my sis900 and my connection works right away. I liked suse, but I thought it was lacking in rpms. I've been toying with fedora core3 test2 the past couple of days...I'm not quite sure if I like it or not yet, lol. I had briefly installed mandrake 10.0 but my sis900 still didn't work :( ...but, I'm debating on installing it tonight with the plug and play OS turned OFF and disabling the acpi. Since my fedora install is fresh it's not like I'd be losing anything important.
  14. was there/is htere anything tha tyou did to get around it? if so, please let me know
  15. Well, I"m a semi-linux newbie and I have never used Debian, I've heard great things about it and I've yet to try it. I've used SuSE, Mandrake, and Red Hat in the past but would like to try debian out due to the port system. I read an article on the Debian-Installer release candidate 1 and it looked very straight foward and seemed to be a great installer. I downloaded it (around 114mb I think) and once the installer was launched I wanted to download the packages via FTP. I have an onboard ethernet connection ( SiS 900 to be exact) but, for some reason my dhcp isn't detected. I have bellsouth fast access dsl connection, so that means it's pppoe. Sorry if this sounds very obvious, but, do you guys know how I would go about getting this to work? Thank you for any help that you can give me, and if you need any more info please ask.
  16. I'm kinda torn between the two. I find that both will allow me to do whatever I need to do. They are both fast, and although they look different I like the looks of both. Sometimes I use Gnome and sometimes I use KDE, I guess it depends on what mood I'm in :P Mark
  17. I thought Sun was working with Gnome to help out with linux
  18. that's how I got started. I tried the live cd and I loved it :D Mark
  19. I'm a linux newbie but I LOVE yast so far :D

    SiS900

Well, anybody that has seen my previous mandrake threads knows that I've never been able to get my SiS900 onboard ethernet to work with mandrake. I tried in 9.1 and 9.2 but with little success. Recently I've been using SuSE9.0 with no problems, was running smoothly. I"m still a linux noob, but I'm better than I used to be. So I was a bit bored today and already had the mandrake 10 ISO's downloaded so I figured I might as well give it a try. Eth0 failed on boot (always happens to me  ) So I think configured it in harddrake. After restarting the network and restarting X it still wouldn't work. So, now I have to ask you guys for help...as usual ;) Here is the output of lspci: [mark@localhost mark]$ lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS 645xx (rev 03) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS 530 Virtual PCI-to-PCI bridge (AGP) 00:02.0 ISA bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS]: Unknown device 0963 (rev 2 5) 00:02.1 SMBus: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS]: Unknown device 0016 00:02.5 IDE interface: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 5513 [IDE] 00:02.7 Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Sound Cont roller (rev a0) 00:03.0 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.0 Controller (rev 0f) 00:03.1 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.0 Controller (rev 0f) 00:03.2 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 2.0 Controller 00:04.0 Ethernet controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS900 10/100 Ethe rnet (rev 91) 00:0b.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! 22. Although I"m a linux newbie (glad to be one) here is how I view the situation: If you are happy with a mediocre product, not having total control of your system, viruses, more holes than swiss cheese, and a resource hog then stick with windoz. If you like having total control of your system, not having your choices limited, having a plethora of software to choose from, and stability then stick with linux. I've always been a windows user, and granted I'm still much faster/efficient with windoz than I am with linux I still prefer linux. I enjoy tweaking it and breaking it, the more I do that the more I learn and the more fun I have. Linux definately isn't for everybody, but I'm definately glad I'm making my effort to be better with linux than I am with windoz. Mark
  23. Thanks for the reply :D I was fairly positive that linux wouldn't need those utils but I figured I'd better be safe than sorry :) Mark
