  1. I am sure that the problem is that you are still not using the correct install procedure. You only have to miss just one little detail and that will be enough to screw it all up. I would also strongly recommend you redownload the driver from NVIDIAs own web site because this can often be a problem. I got a brand new ASUS V9520 Magic--GeForce FX 5200--TV-out on late Saturday Afternoon and installed the driver (from NVIDIAs own website) during lunch time yesterday (Sunday). It has been running perfectly ever, since despite my going back and forth between Win2000 and also another box I have just finished setting up solely for Win2000 ( My main machine will then become solely a MANDRAKE Machine.......at long last. Phew. ) I have enclosed an attachment which contains the EXACT directions that Chris Z laid out in a post of his earlier. I printed it out and followed it exactly. So should you and everyone else.. It is not hard to follow and even though I had never done anything like it before (using VIM) it worked out perfectly. I used his suggested < Option "NvAGP" "3" > And especially do not forget the < :wq > part in his directions because if you do not then you will not be saving the changes you made to the texts. Be sure it is < :wq > and not < :wp > as I tried to do a couple of times :woops: A huge thank you CHRIS Z. I got a glxgears count of an average 885,000 over a 3 minute run. The most visible difference is seen when using the "Euphoria ScreenSaver". Check before and then after installing the driver. First it could hardly even walk and now it runs. Cheers. John.
  2. Thank you ANNA for that great snippet of Info. I will be doing something in there myself now. Cheers. John.
  3. Well I am giving up for the present. Still does not work out despite slavishly following the instructions and even trying some variations. Thanks for helping, everyone, especially Steve. Cheers. John.
  4. Well I tried using MakeCD from the #1CDROM via /mnt/misc/MakeCD but still got the same result....4 isos (one for each CDROM disk ???) except that they were numbered 2,3,4 and 5 and iso5 was only about 290MBs so something screwed up in the whole damned thing. During the whole process there was a lot of crap about mandrake-cooker but what this had to do with it all I do not know. Thinking it had connected to Mandrake cooker ( I am on ADSL and online all the time), I disconnected from online and reran the process again but it made no difference. Even tried putting ALL the individual RPMs into the same RPMS folder. Got a lot of rejections in Konsole because dependencies could not be found !!!! Will still keep on trying any new suggestions. Cheers. John.
  5. Hello Steve. I did the whole MakeCD routine since it was on the #1 cdrom. All it did was to make an iso for EACH of the CDROMs RPMS sets so I finished up with four isos. It did this despite the fact that I had put the #2,3,4 cdrom RPMS sets along side the #1 cdroms RPMS . See snapshot below. And no way could I work out how to burn them ALL AS ONE iso for the DVD in either K3B or XCDroast. And neither of them were very helpful in trying to set them up for Bootable burning. K3B will only burn one iso so the exercise was largely a waste of time. I just reread your latest message. Are you saying that I should copy the MakeCD part OUT of the Directory that I created with ALL the 4 cdroms and run it and not run it from WITHIN the directory? While I await your reply on that, I will give that a try.
  6. Thanks a million Steve. Now I don't feel so much of a dunce after all. An apology is not necessary, but thanks anyhow. Just the fact that you will be looking into it is reward enough, especially since you are generously donating your time and effort to help (as do many others). Cheers. John.
  7. Hello Steve. Are we talking about Mandrake10 CDROMS here and not CD downloads here??? I cannot find anywhere on my PRINTED cdroms, any mention of MakeCD. In fact I find your description very hard to follow because it seems to be generalisation rather than specific to Mandrake 10. For poor dumb buggers like me it is very frustrating. I have copied each CDROM into a folder titled Mandrake10OE. I did this by copying the entire #1 CDROM and then copying RPMS2, RPMS3, RPMS4 from #2, 3, and 4 cdroms into the same place as RPMS is located. I left out the Boot folder from CDROM2 but I notice that the Boot folder on CDROM1 is empty. You mention :- "(repeat for each iso) " I guess that would mean for each of the downloaded CDs that are still in ISO format. So In my case then this does not apply. This is where I am getting totally confused because most of the instruction is vague to my case of when I first started this thread about MAKING A BOOTABLE DVD FROM THE 4 CDROM PRINTED SET and not a Downloaded Cd set. The only iso that I can find is in IMAGES on #1 CDROM and it is titled boot.iso and not just .iso Below is what I have tried and the result [john@DETHERMY john]$ su [root@DETHERMY john]# cd /etc/ [root@DETHERMY etc]# mkdir /mnt/iso mkdir: cannot create directory `/mnt/iso': File exists [root@DETHERMY etc]# mkdir /etc/mdk10 mkdir: cannot create directory `/etc/mdk10': File exists [root@DETHERMY etc]# mount -o loop /ALLPICTURES/Mandrake10OE/images/boot.iso /mnt/iso [root@DETHERMY john]# cp -R /mnt/iso/* /etc/mdk10 [root@DETHERMY john]# umount /mnt/iso [root@DETHERMY etc]#[root@DETHERMY etc]# mdk10/misc/MakeCD --discsize 4700000000 -t /etc -i /etc -a /etc/mdk10 bash: mdk10/misc/MakeCD: No such file or directory Steve, you obviously are a very cluey guy and know what you are doing ( a sincere compliment and not sarcasm), so could you please walk me through the procedure in detail just to humour an older fellow. Hope to hear from you and thanks in advance. Cheers. John.
  8. Sorry pinoy. I did not mean to be rude. I thought I had typed pinoy but being a 2 finger typist I touched the "t" button instead. "t" and "y" are alongside oneanother. Cheers. John.
  9. Thanks MadDOG and Pinot for geting onto the case. Yes MadDOG, I think it would make a great project especially now that DVD Dual Layer burners are becoming more prevalent and economical to buy. Cheers. John.
  10. Hello all. I have just acquired a new LG Dual-Layer DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW. burner. I have the full set of 4 CDROMS of Mandrake 10 OE and I am interested in putting all four discs onto the one DVD-R (TDK brand). I also have K3B ver. 0.11.12. I have experience copying CDROMs including Mandrakes but have always "cloned" the CDROMS so the copies have always been bootable. I believe that there is a special routine to put 4 cds onto one DVD and still be bootable. Does anyone know it or how to get the routine ??? Would greatly appreciate. Cheers. John.
  11. I have two identical WD 80Gb 8mb cache HDDs. I did the setting routine suggested on hdc and then the test at the end. I did the test only, on my hda and the results were near enough the same. Sure the hdc results appear a little better but is that gain really significant ???. dev/hdc: Timing buffer-cache reads: 1924 MB in 2.00 seconds = 960.23 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 132 MB in 3.01 seconds = 43.82 MB/sec /dev/hda: Timing buffer-cache reads: 1860 MB in 2.00 seconds = 928.75 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 136 MB in 3.03 seconds = 44.92 MB/sec This is the result of running the settings in hda and then doing the test again, /dev/hda: Timing buffer-cache reads: 1896 MB in 2.00 seconds = 947.20 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 134 MB in 3.04 seconds = 44.09 MB/sec I don't think running these settings is really worthwhile. I think modern hard drives are pretty well running at optimum now days. Having selected LBA in the BIOS, instead of the default Auto, as recommended by Mandrake has probably set up the settings this exercise wants to achieve. I am no expert so I wouldn't even know if an LBA bit me on the bum. Cheers. John.
  12. Rule Number 1. Make certain you defrag your Windows OS IMMEDIATELY BEFORE doing any repartitioning of Windows. XP in particular, deliberately places data randomly near the end of its partition as a means of discouraging any reduction to its partition size. Defragging doesn't necessarily mean that ALL data will be moved back to the beginning of the partition but most of it will and there is a good chance that all of it will . Any other Windows OS are just usually badly fragmented. Note that Partition Magic is an EXCELLENT tool for recreating partitions and I have NEVER lost a Bit of data or had an OS damaged by using it. I am still using the same old version I bought 5yrs ago, so once you have it you don't really have to keep upgrading it. Because of the region it operates in, it tends to be extremely conservative in doing its thing so if it is in doubt, it does not proceed and tells you why. When I have had totally messed up hard drives, I have not been able to get Partition Magic to delete all of the partitions and reformat. The Linux CDROM Install/upgrade couldn't get far enough along to be able to delete and reformat either so finally I have had to resort to using the Windows blind steamroller to do it. A question to those that might know. What is the advantage of using NTFS in a Windows OS over Fat32 ???. It is reported to be more secure............(on the most insecure OS on the planet ?????) It seems more like it is intended to be deliberately non backwards compatabile. This observation stems from all the problems I see here at MUB regarding anything NTFS. I have never used NTFS in W98 or W2000, only fat32 so I have never ever had troubles between Windows and Mandrake. Cheers. John
  13. kilimanjaro . I see in your fstab that your first cdrom line has <iocharset=iso8859-1> I think it should read as <iocharset=iso8859-15> the same as the other other drive and the floppy should read that way as well. i.e. it should be 15 and not 1. John.
  14. A thought just occurred to me. In XMMSs Preferences.......Audio plugins. What happens if you click on the line which reads MPEG layer 1/2/3 Player..etc ??? Does the Enable plugin button depress or is it still raised.??? The same question about Ogg Vorbis Player. If not then you should depress the button after you click on the line to highlight it. and make sure to click Apply
  15. Hi VICKI. This is a little involved but not really hard. First look in the firefox-installer and look for < firefox> and make a note of the path to it by reading the line at the top of Konqueror e.g. in my case it is /zstore/Firefox/firefox-installer/firefox. Write that line down which is on your computer on a piece of paper. Now close out all of that. Open Mandrake Control Centre (It will ask for your root password)........System............Menus. A pop-up panel will ask you which do you want to Edit .....System Menu or Root Menu . Select System Menu and after a couple of little happenings, Menudrake will open up for you. In the section titled Enviroment : kde, look down and find <Internet> and double click on it then you will see <Web browsers> and double click on it also then you will see a couple of web browsers such as Konqueror and Mozilla plus maybe others . Now highlight <Web browsers> using just a single click on it. Now here is the happening part. Click on the Green Cross titled <Add application> and you will now see three names Title: type in Firefox Long title: leave blank Command: now type in exactly what you wrote down on that piece of paper (Later when you get used to it you can use the browse button at the right to select where you know the application to be located. Not the Folder but the actual active application) You now click Save at the top. If you have done it all correctly then when click on Star then Internet then Web browsers you should see Firefox listed and most importantly when you click on it, it should open up for you. It is most likely that you would prefer an Icon on the Desktop or on the Panel for convenience. Using Konqueror again go back to where you found firefox and just to be sure that you have correct item just click on it and if Firefox opens up for you then you know that you have located the correct item. Close Firefox (the now opened browser) left click on and hold down the mouse key to do a DRAG of the item either on to the Desktop or the Panel, your preference, and release. A small panel will pop up, Click OK. The panel will disappear. Now right click on the icon you just created and click on the icon shown on the pop up panel and this will take you into the Icon files. Click on Other icons and then Browse. Use Browse to take you to the location of your firefox-installer and look for Chrome.......Icons............Default and you will see the Firefox icon. Double click on the icon and it will take you back to the original panel where you again click OK . Now it is all done. This the way to do it for anyother applications you may install and which don't show up in the Menu or on your desktop etc. Although it seems lengthy and long winded it really is quite simple, easy and quick to do once you know the routine. Happy Firefox hunting. John.
  16. Xbob. Please tell us what you have actually tried.....in detail. You have a problem and waiting for a new build down the road is not going to help you at all because the present xmms 1.2.10 is already a good working item. Most everybody else has xmms working OK so are you saying there is something wrong with xmms because YOU can't get it working ??? This is the reason we try to help people such as yourself when you have difficulties. 1. Have you installed an RPM of xmms 1.2.10 rather than a tar source form. ??? 2. Have you opened Kmixer and made certain that the sound controls for Volume AND AND AND also PCM have been set to near full level and they have not been muted. If the greenish button or buttons are a dark green then they have been muted. click on them and they should become a light green. The PCM one in particular is the one most often overlooked because most people do not know what it is. 3. When you right click in the middle of xmms, a menu pops up, select Options.......Preferences which brings up another panel . Look at "Output Plugin" and if it is not already set to ALSA then click on the button and select it from the drop down menu. Click APPLY then OK. from here on in you should be able to select some mp3 or Ogg-vorbis file and be able to hear music. Try these procedures and tell us what resulted from each one. If after all this you still have no sound then we can work on some other ideas. By the way, when you log into your account, do you hear an intro melody ?? just a Yes or a No please. This question is not relevent to logging into ROOT. Like to hear from you. John.
  17. I wasted my time going there. They are full of so much bru-ha that I thought I was on a Windows website. They love themselves so much its embarrassing. I tried so hard to be accepting and understanding but it was impossible. Like Microsoft, they did the settingup and they did the testing. So of course they would come out the best wouldn't they. John
  18. That appear/disappear function will only occur if you have not selected the following:- KDE Control Centre.........Look & Feel............Behavior.........Device Icons and then ticked the appropiate CDROM and CDWriter in Mounted and Unmounted boxes. If you have then the Icons will be on your desktop all the time. If the icons are not on your desktop under those circumstance then it means that your devices have not been detected or have not been set up correctly. Since you are having problems I think it would be helpful to you if you ticked those boxes if you have not done so already. Cheers. John.
  19. Just as lxthusdan said, you should not ideally have both CD devices on the same channel, you should also not ideally have two HDDs on the same channel. Most times things will still work but on some machines some wierd effects are likely to happen. The main reason for putting similar devices on different channels is because you often read and write to similar devices aand this creates congestion and slowness when the same channel is being used to read and write to simultaneously. When you copied kilimanjaros' etc/fstab , did you reboot ??? if you haven't done so because you don't usually and you are still in the same mode then I would strongly recommend it. Just logging in then out is not enough.
  20. Gatemaster The reason the fdisk/mbr did not work is because you did not put a space after fdisk. It should be fdisk /mbr . Remember that is microsofts instructions not Linuxs. You did not have to do a reinstall of XP at all. If you had cleared the MBR correctly you would have been able to go straight into XP as normal. You cannot blame Linux for that. Another point. I bet you did not defrag XP immediately before trying to install Linux. XP makes it a practice of making sure that stuff is placed near the end of the drive as a DELIBERATE deterrent to any other system being installed on the hard drive. That is why most sensible people use a facility such as Partition Magic to repartition hard drives but you still need to defrag first. I find it strange that you have to use a floppy to boot up first so you can install from the cdroms. I HAVE NEVER HAD TO DO THIS ON ANY MACHINE I have been involved in. I am inclined to think there is something wrong with your CDROM reader regardless of whether it works in Windows. And this is the first area I would check out. I use a Pioneer DVD-CD reader and it is exremely effective and reliable. The same cannot be said for a lot of other cheaper brands. Sounds like you have a good machine. It's worth having the BEST OS on it so perservere with it. Once you start using Linux (especially Mandrake 10 OE) you will wonder what you ever saw in XP to use it in the first place. Cheers. John.
  21. I agree with streeter. There is NO point in waiting for the next release of Mandrake. What exacttly makes you think there is anything wrong with Mandrake as it is ???. I cannot follow your thinking on this. I am using KDE all the time and I never had a problem installing or using it. You are having a problem WITH YOUR OWN INSTALL OF KDE so waiting for the next version of Mandrake is not going to fix that, unless you happen to do your installation slightly different than the way you did it this time. Have you tried doing a "DUMMY upgrade" by inserting the #1 cdrom and rebooting and follow the upgrade procedure ??? More often than not, this little trick sorts out a lot of such problems. If you haven't tried it then you have nothing to lose by trying it. If it does not work then you are no worse off. Cheers. John.
  22. Hello io333 and lawsonrc and Ed the Noob. I have used all of your methods and never had any problems so I guess it is what one prefers. Isn't Linux wonderful for that.?...............choices. Ed the Noob thanks for the info about the Mouse Thumb Button. I guess you have the Logitech Mouse that has two thumb buttons. I have the Logitech Dual laser Mouse and it only has the one thumb button. I am now happily getting used to using the thumb button to GO Back and have made up my mind to get the new one with 2 thumb buttons since it is so damned handy. Thank you for the tip. Cheers both
  23. Hello retiredff. If you do it the way I suggested then you won't have to waste money burning CDs all the time just to transfer data. Or use CD-RWs and you can reuse the Disk over and over again. But doing as I suggest means you can do simple Cut or Copy and then Paste anytime you want. When you open Mandrake Control Centre, click on Mountpoints then Partitions. There you will see all of the partitions of your two harddrives. The one you are already in will show all the names of your partitions whereas the other hard drives partitions will be nameless and just showing the divisions that represent the partitions. Just click on one of these unnamed Linux partitions in the other hard drive and then click on MountPoint. In the window that opens up, type /other OS (or a name of your choice) and click on OK Then you will see a MOUNT button appear in the existing list of buttons. Click on Mount and then DONE (near the Bottom right side). And then Ok on the drop down window which asks whether to save the setting to /etc/fstab. Now when you click on Home and open up Konquerer and click on the UP arrow near the top , you will see the newly mounted partition from the other Os on your other hard drive. You can open it and freely move files etc. in and out as if it was one of your present OSs partitions. One special note of warning. If you do anything in ROOT mode and you screw up your OS then there is a chance that you can screw up that partition as well. Therefore I would recommend that until you want to move files across, then temporarily re-enter MCC and UNMOUNT the partition until you are actually ready to use it. Have a go, it is not hard . Cheers. John.
  24. Hi lawsonrc. I think you are making too many assumptions that your #4 CDROMs are burned OK. It is funny isn't it, that thousands have downloaded and installed the 4 or 5 Disk set AOK and because you cannot then Mandrake Club is at fault or Mandrake 10 is to blame. Some posters in the past have come to realise that they needed to redownload some disks again even though they seemed to checksum okay. And what are the "too many things are buggy in MDK Official Edition PowerPak,' or are you just repeating unnamed persons ????. The Mandrake 10 OE that I am using is EXACTLY the same as in the Power Pack edition and so far I have only found ONE unimportant little bug which doesn't bother me at all and I have been using Mandrake10 CE since it first came out and then the Mandrake 10 OE since the first printed sets were available. If Mandrake 10 OE is full of bugs then I must be using something different. I hope this is not an indication of how you do things normally. Give it a try again. Or next time buy the boxed set instead and then you can be more certain of the disks behaviour and you also financially help support Mandrake as well. Cheers. John.
  25. Great. We all learn from oneanother. I'll keep that solution in mind for the future. Typing KDE (upper case only ) kind of makes sense when you think about it since it is a known CONSOLE instruction. We tend to forget that when we get to that text mode after boot up that it is a console which has opened up. Cheers. John.
