  1. Thank you Arctic. You are correct. Why would I be upset because someone here didn't correctly read my suggestion ???. Thyme's response is typical as to what is causing so many members leaving MUB. Maybe I should have loaded my post with funny emoticons to ensure i didn't hurt any ones feelings especially Thymes. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D Cheers. John.
  2. Did I say tool bar ???. No I did not. I said Title Bar. Right at the very top. I can't make it any clearer than that. John.
  3. Seems no one bothered to answer you query about moving an open application to a different desktop. It is dead easy. Just right click anywhere on the title bar at the very top and a menu will drop . From it you can select from "To Desktop" which desktop you want to move it to. Easypesy. Cheers. john.
  4. Nope. Haven't experienced that one. If it happens constantly then maybe have a look in KDM settings. Cheers. John.
  5. Yes you can download the latest kernel and NO it does NOT update the existing kernel. After you install the latest kernel, you will have to open MCC and go into Boot and select it as default if you want to use it permanently. If not then when you reboot you can select the new kernel from the Grub boot menu where it will be listed. Keep in mind that if you use the new kernel, you may also have to reinstall your video driver as well. Cheers. John.
  6. I think it sounds more like a defective Board regardless of it being new. I would suggest returning it if possible and replacing it. On board audio chips are cheap, that is why they are used. I say that even though I use it myself. :D Cheers. John.
  7. To Xolo. No tweaks. It is standardand does not require the installation of xkill or any other packages. Open KDE Control Centre..........Regional and Accessability..............Keyboard Shortcuts..........Miscellaneous There you will see or should see a line Kill Window-----------Ctrl+Alt+Escape If it is not there then I think you can set it up to be so. I say again I haver never had to tweaks to get this and I only use default keyboard settings. Special Note: I select US Keyboard rather than British Keyboard because a couple of keys are changed and do not do as I want (can't remember what now since it was so long ago :D ) Cheers. John.
  8. Open a console such as konsole. Type in kdesu konqueror, it will ask for your root password, type it in and press enter. This will open konqueror in root mode. Use the UP arrow at the the top of Konqueror and go into Boot then Grub and click on menu.lst in there you can type in what was suggested to you by Reiver, namely............ title Windows Vista rootnoverify (hd0,0) chainloader +1 Keep a space between the new entry and the existing entrys. Go to the top of console and select Save. Because you are in root mode then it will be saved. Give it a try and see how you go. Cheers. John.
  9. Seems you did not follow Reivers advice and look for menu.lst. It most definately in /boot/grub/menu.lst if you are using Mandriva. In Madriva there is no grub.config Cheers. John.
  10. Thank you for that info, Artee. I always felt that it was nothing to worry about but now I can explain it to my friends who have/may ask me about it in thee future. Cheers. John.
  11. The easiest is ......Ctrl+Alt+Esc.... This will kill just the particular frozen program when you position the mouse pointer (now a skull and bones icon) 0ver the application and Left click it. I have never found it necessary to install any kind of Kill program in the past 5 to 6 years. Cheers. John.
  12. When you open the terminal, e.g.. konsole, you will need to do the sensors-detect routine as root so you need to type in su and then your password of course. Cheers. John. And by the way, ..........A very warm welcome to MUB. JB.
  13. You also need to tell us whether the DVD Drive is IDE or the newer SATA. Cheers. John.
  14. Hello David. Thanks for reminding us all about the dual layer aspect. It is easily overlooked. Fortunately both of my DVD Drives (1 IDE and 1 SATA) are multi layer burners and multi layer readers. Cheers. John.
  15. Welcome to MUB, Dad (????). Most important......Have you installed ...libdvdcss.....???. Cheers. John.
  16. Seems like my suggestion was maybe correct even though ignored. :D Cheers. John.
  17. As Greg says, it may be a symptom that / is full. There have been many instances where /var/log has been filled up by a problem elsewhere which has caused a flood of logs. Probably worth looking into. Cheers. John.
  18. I feel the same as David, that a MUTE is the possible problem. Just my 10cents (American or Australian. Almost the same now :lol2: ) Cheers. John.
  19. Hello ChronicInside. With the exception of swap I would say your setup is OK. However there is absolutely no need for a 3.8Gbs Swap. The absolute most would be 1GBs but in practical terms, 512 Mbs is more than sufficient. You gain nothing from such a large Swap and simply waste space. Cheers. John.
  20. That memory stick does not have to be fat32. There is no reason why it cannot be converted to ext3 so there would no longer be a 4Gb limit would there ???. I think I am I correct in believing that NTSF has no such limit but then of course you can't install Mandriva on to NTSF and why would you. I am pretty sure there is a method to install mandriva on to a USB memory stick somewhere, isn't there ???. After all Mandriva does it with their own Mandriva Flash. :D Cheers. John.
  21. If you do what has been suggested then you will likely regain access to your Windows and will not have to un-install and maybe reinstall Mandriva again later. If you feel too precious about your Windows then Linux may not be for you. However if you truly would like to learn the Linux experience you need to understand that Linux/Mandriva is one of the most advanced and most user friendly OSs in existence and unlike Windows, does something Windows does not ever do and that is exist in harmony with any other OS on a machine. Since you can boot into Mandriva then do so, then open MCC (Mandriva Control Centre)..........Boot.............Set up Boot System..........Next............Add.........and follow from there. If you do it correctly then Windows should appear in the Grub Menu when you reboot. Cheers. John.
  22. Yes I knew that your model doesn't have a Lan connection. If you did buy a reasonably priced one with Lan and used it, I have little doubt that your ISP wouldn't even know you were not using their supplied modem. Can other more technically informed members inform me whether I am correct ???. Cheers. John.
  23. Did you buy the modem recently ??? I looked at its spec and it appears to be an ADSL USB equivalent of a WinModem. In other words crap. Sorry but it is. No matter how hard you fiddle around with it with all the best intentions of help from members here at MUB, it will still be crap. Google Wikipedia for it and you will see what crap specs it has. You will be far better off cutting your losses and getting an ADSL modem that has a Lan connection. Ones with a single Lan port are pretty cheap nowadays. It is the multiple port models that are much dearer, but not all that much dearer. Within 5 minutes of installing it you will be up and running. When I got my Speedtouch 500 from Telstra/Bigpond I connected it up via USB (Win98 at the time) it took nearly an hour of mucking around to finally get it working in Windows. When I tried using it in Mandrake/Mandriva it took even longer than that and yet it still wasn't stable. It was right here at MUB that someone mentioned that the 500 had a Lan connector. I didn't know anything about Lan but thought what the heck, I would give it a try. Obtained the appropriate cable and connected it up after removing the USB cable connection. I didn't know it was unnecessary so i had switched off the computer. Booted up, Went into MCC and followed the simple setting up and in 3 minutes I was online. Still got the same modem and have never had trouble ever since and the process is so simple. Cheers. John.
  24. I have had that 5 second interval single impulse in 2007.1, 2008-Free and 2008-Spring. I have different hard drives installed in the past month and it still occurs so it has nothing to do with the hard drives. It also occurs on my various friends Mandriva machines and also on my second box. That is why I said in my post previous that it appears to be a normal event since it is so widespread. A noisy HDD is a symptom of a real problem ahead such as an impending Disc failure. Back up your data to an alternative source as quickly as possible. However I am curious to learn what causes it so as to add to my Linux/Mandriva knowledge. Does anyone know, perhaps AdamW ???. :D Cheers. John.
  25. Firstly, welcome to MUB. When you installed the driver, did you reboot ???. Often times that is helpful even though it may seem unnecessary. Also you did not say what model printer you are using. Calling it an Epson printer doesn't tell anyone anything at all. Cheers. John.
