Hi John, Ususally I would agree, but this time I don't. I remember trying to install the driver from the nvidia's site. I read all the instructions, but there were a lot of problems, and at the end of the process I found myself stuck. Then someone here told me to install from the repos, and only that solved the problem. I don't know, maybe their instructions are not "generic" enough (for all hardwares, or kernels, or distros).

Try looking for "firefox2.0.0.4" (without the space), or even just "firefox" or "mozilla" and find it among the suggested packages (there are not so many of them).

I don't know if one needs to uninstall FF1 before installing FF2. I do know that when I upgraded my FF, I used the MCC. I just looked for the FF2 and marked it. Maybe in the process of installation FF1 was first uninstalled, though I find it hard to believe. And it all works fine now.

Hi John, I'm not sure I know what you mean. I too run Mandriva One Spring, and I do see the path System->Pref->Sound->System Beep. Is it what you referred to? Maybe there is a difference between the Mandriva One and the full DVD? Hard for me to believe. Ah! Do you use Gnome? Maybe there is a difference between Gnome and KDE? Sounds more like it, if you asked me. Try Applications -> System -> Configure Your Computer. Type root's password. What is the title you see on the upper frame of the MCC (Mandriva Control Center) window?

I think it's quite clear that Asus didn't try to develop a killer-app. They just tried to keep the price really low. So of course you can find better devices on the market, only not at this price, or even close. I think the expected performance should be somewhat correlated with the cost. Having that said: regarding the screen, I totally agree it's problematic. I read somewhere it's going to be 640x480 resolution. First of all, it's no good. Second, I don't know if the VGA output will support highr resolutions. And third, I've never run Mandriva on such a low resolution. Has anyone tried it? I guess all the icons and menus become out of proportion, so I'm not sure that in that sense Mandriva will run properly on this machine. And I totally agree that 7" is too small. My guess is that they had some constrain regarding the design: They couldn't make a smaller keyboard or comuter, so they are limited in how small the device can be. On the other hand they couldn't use a larger screen, maybe because of price and energy considerations. So they decided to use the free space near the screen for the microphones, and it looks really bad. At least they could use white microhones (instead of black) for the white computer!

The last rumor is that it will cost 250$ for 8GB flash (initially it was supposed to cost 200$, but with 4GB flash only). BTW, most of the rumors I take from here.

You are right, it is not stated in the press release, but I found it in a few places on the web, like this one. The reason I'm asking is that on on the wiki page it says that it will run Mandriva. So is it tested by Mandriva, or is it one of those cases where it is not recommended to count on wikipedia?

Hey everyone, For a long time now I put my eyes on the eee pc of Asus. I thought of buying one when it comes to the market (apparently on mid August, cost 200$-250$). The word says that it's going to run Xandros OS, adapted for this specific machine (the GUI is supposed to be more Windows-like for newbies). Does anyone know (or even has a guess) if Mandriva will run on it? Is the Mandriva group working on checking Mandriva's compliance with the HW? I really build on this gadget, with its price and weight I think it's going to be a blow-up, but I'd really like running Mandriva on it.

Still no luck. When I click the movie I see the embedded m-player in Firefox writing "Connecting to server..." and then "Stopped". when I click the play button it happens again, but the movie doesn't start. Greg, I apologize, your remarks look very interesting but I don't feel so well so I didn;t click all the links. I promise to read them thoroughly today and refer to them. I have a feeling it's not a bug but something I did wrong, and I'm going to get into that and try to understand what happened. Thanks a lot for your guidance.

Dani, you solved half of the problem! I can now watch flash streaming video, but other streaming videos I still can't play. BTW, I still don't understand what went wrong the first time I installed the flash player, but never mind that now. The dude is very grateful.

Hi malfist, I'd like to continue orts' line: if you are using Mandriva, the easiest way to install and update software is through the MCC - Mandriva Control Center. You can search there for Firefox 2 and install it very easily. If you need any more guidance regarding how to do that, let us know.

I signed the petition. Thanks. I tried to watch the streaming video. Still no luck. In the page I get a "Playing..." message and the play button is pressed, but nothing happens, just like with flash movies. I don't believe it's a codecs issue. I watched all kinds of movie formats (mpg, avi, wmv...) on the computer, never had a problem. I believe the m-player has some sort of a mechanism for identifying when a codec is missing, and then it gets it by itself, but I'm not sure about that.

I visited adobe.com, and indeed - there is a problem. I'm told that Adobe flash player version 9.0.48.0 is installed successfully, but the Adobe shockwave player is missing. When I click on it to download the plugin, I get the following message: When I go to the table I see shockwave player only for Windows and Mac OS, but none for Linux. So I'm puzzled. Greg - can you please point me to a site with streaming video which isn't flash-based? Sorry, I just don't know any. Guys - I appreciate your help very much. Both for Greg2 and daniewicz: I don't have any library called ~/.mozilla/plugins. When I run Greg's command (I hope it's fine I started calling you on first name basis) I get the following message: bash: cd: /home/username/.mozilla/plugins: No such file or directory When I look at the libraries in Nautilus all I see is /home/username/.mozilla, and there isn't any plugins library. There is a library called firefox, but this one also doesn't contain any plugins library. Should I install it? And how? Maybe I should mention that if I look at the installed programs in the MCC, I see the package flash-player-plugin-9.0.48.0-1plf2007.1.i586 is installed.

Yes, I installed the Nvidia GeForce 3 - GeForce 4 driver, which I believe fits my card. Furthermore, I have no problem watching a video which is not streaming but runs locally.
