  1. please excuse the "bump", but i've learned a few things since posting this topic, so i want to update what's going on here. first of all, i suspect that i should probably have more resources in my "Media Manager"? currently, i have two items: installation i586 CD1 update_source i received the following errors when, following a recommendation to install drakwizard as part of the process to installing mod_userdir via the System Config dialogs i realize there's a great margin of possibile conflict, dependency issues, etc-- however, i also know that if a dependency can be installed, to resolve an issue, but it's simply "not available" due to repos themselves, then perhaps-- i need to work on that configuration a bit (as it's practically still an "out of the box" setup) any advice will be appreciated. THANK you! :) PS. what can i do from CLI to give me some data to report here which might shed give a summary view of my system? (such as chkconfig for example?)
  2. hi. in searching the forums, i found only one thread pertaining to my issue of Apache Module mod_userdir and not much more [that i found helpful] elsewhere, surprisingly. having used FC5 for several months as a home Workstation / Testing Server, and now using Mandriva (at least temporarily) for the same, i must say i don't understand why it seems that the familar ./home/*/public_html/ for a "User Dir" isn't supported. it's merely mentioned as follows in the Mandriva 2007 httpd.conf: ## LoadModule userdir_module modules/mod_userdir.so -> available in the apache-mod_userdir package curious also why some modules are commented w/ one "hash mark" (octothrope), vs two-- where mod_userdir does have two. perhaps i'm to go about having a "User's localhost" in a different manner here in Mandriva? perhaps, in my limited familiarity w/ Mandriva itself, there's more i should know-- such as "Mandriva isn't packaged to be a fully functional Web Server / Mandriva isn't meant to support User directories"? it would seem, as it stands, i'd be forced to use "root" to properly develop web stuff. what am i missing here? i've tried #] urpmi apache-mod_userdir (and several variations thereof), and nothing seems to give me an option to install a mod_userdir "package". is there something like a yum.repos.d that i need to configure here to provide myself some more resources? EDIT: conceeding to copy a few webs to /var/www/html/ i discovered that there exists one directory below named "addon-modules" in which resides HOWTO*addon-modules.html the link within this file leads to http://nux.se/apache/ -- a site which appears to be right-minded, yet has little in terms of useful material as most/ all links are "broken" so... how is this issue handled by a Webdeveloper working in a Mandriva environment? thanks!!
  3. hey yo. just wanted to comment on my elation over Mandriva. i installed it nearly a week ago, but hadn't really got into using it till today. i must say i'm impressed. i've fooled around only a little bit w/ Ubuntu-- i see what they're trying to do there, and it wasn't for me. i've used FC5 since late May 06, and i've liked it a lot. to me, Ubuntu seems like "FC5 Lite for Dummies"... or something... but Mandriva. now this is cool. if there is any argument about which GNU Linux Distro is the most viable candidate for, lets say, installation on Dell PC's, or the horribly over-argued "which is the best Windows XPatriot distro?", clearly the resolve is Mandriva, no? granted, i haven't yet tried SuSE or Debian, but this is nice. Mandriva, I like i like. EDIT: hmph! i'd swear even GIMP seems "better" here. i suppose it has a lot to do simply w/ Packages being a bit newer than when i first installed FC5 10 mnths ago, but regardless of the "reason", the improvement-- overall, is remarkable. now i face the challenge of dealing w/ all of my FC5 "stuff" -- i've got Mandriva here on a 20GB just for testing, while the BULK of my stuff is on FC5 at 120GB. unfortunately, my Home directory is under ./ on that drive, so i guess i cant simply "install around it". (suggestions anyone?) i don't really have enough HDD space on other drives to temporarily swap data either (not to mention the prerequisite patience for such a task). hmm... time to do some shopping perhaps? anyone know of some great deals on 120GB (and larger) drives? ;) P.S. i was gonna say that i was looking for a "Mandriva Rocks" category, but i see that the closest is probably "News, Discussion, and Chat: Linux". hmm... wonder if it's a worthy consideration? (not necessarily by that name of course. ;)
  4. what about the curious numbers after BIOS on main boot device activation... when LILO / MBR / something was apparently not working properly? and how does one edit files from CLI at the Rescue prompt (assuming options are different from other CLI prompts)? as "vim", "view", and "joe" were not recognized does this seem like perhaps it was okay to choose "option #2" (putting LILO not w/ the MBR), but due to those jumpers-- it couldn't kick in? when i fixed the jumpers, i chose the "Patch" option, -- AND the MBR partition, so i can't say from experience that anything other than the MBR option will work here, so this has become a curiousity.
  5. hi there. my experience w/ trying to install opera is as follows: [root@localhost www_Browser]# urpmi opera* Some requested packages cannot be installed: opera-9.10-20061214.6.i386 (due to unsatisfied libstdc++.so.5) and my attempt to resolve it ends with: [root@localhost www_Browser]# urpmi libstdc The package(s) are already installed The following package names were assumed: libstdc++6 [root@localhost www_Browser]# urpmi libstdc++6 The package(s) are already installed ** the insignificant www_Browser just happens to be what i named the sub directory under ./home/Downloads/ (thanks to everyone for being so pleasant and helpful so far as well. the "tone" of this forum is extraordinarily unassuming, it seems. and that's pretty cool ;) [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  6. i'm kinda confused. don't get me wrong-- i realize i'm not the best at clear, concise posting... but i'm having difficulty w/ what you're addressing here. i understand that you can not boot into Mandriva [and another O/S]? but i i've interpreted your text as though you've contradicted yourself: ie. ".. i install and tell the setup to... 40GB ATA HDD = HDA", and finally you ask why it's labeling it as so? In one sentence, what is at issue? likewise-- what do you want?
  7. this is text i moved from a separate post. i would like to tell you about the re=install process i experienced during an attempt to deal w/ an apparent mis-configuration of LILO (maybe), and how i experienced another "unusual" situation-- probably due to just "trying stuff".. stay if you can. leave if you don't have time. it's all good-- this is 90% commentary as there's no "system problem" here. so i started over from scratch. this time i [chose the option to copy] the [Mandriva 2007 Free] installation CD's to the HDD. when configuring the LILO boot loader, i felt it was relevant to a thread i've got going at LQ.org about "installing around the ./home directory as an approach to "reinstalling" (or trying, Mandriva vs. Fedora due to YUM db issues, for example), so i decided to try putting the bootloader on the 'First part of the Root partition', option #2 instead of at the MBR . Completed the install and acted on the prompt to "restart" (remove install media etc). just after the BIOS welcom screen when the HDD kicks in as bootdevice, i get a series of numbers (like 636363636363 for a couple of lines worth... not sure if those were the exact numbers by now as i didn't record it). i tried Disc01 rescue option on startup ** but couldn't figure out how to EDIT ** fstab [LILO?] because VIEW and VIM etc weren't recognized (or is it mtab?) [not sure, but this would be a great time to learn this detail!!]. (i've dealt w/ fstab before, trying to read a "slaved" ext2 drive w/ Fedora, so i've a little experience w/ it... just mentioning...) tried help, etc. could NOT figure out how to VIEW a file from the [rescue] CLI (at ./tmp/mnt/dev/ wherever it was...) -- so, i went back to square-one once again. at the bootloader [if i recall correctly] i tried putting it on option one at the MBR, but this did NOT help.(see [1] below). this time-- i selected "Patch" (just guessing!) from the menu of Disc01 and chose to "Upgrade" instead of new install. this was apparently the RIGHT THING to do. :) everthing went smoothly. i didn't have to reinstall the software a 3rd time ;) this time i chose to install KDE just to be "on the safe side" as i plan to probably put stuff like kdewebdev on here, etc. **[1] i wonder if this issue might have truly been w/ the HDD itself because i had removed one of the jumpers-- playing w/ it as slave on XP (prior to ALL of this), and never put the jumper config back to "Master". so-- though i had my BIOS set to use this singular drive, the jumpers were still set to "slave". perhaps this is why things got "screwy" ? as in, "LILO was set okay, even as not installed on the MBR, but due to those jumpers-- it couldn't kick in" i guess we'll never know, but i am curious about any input on THIS PARTICULAR issue (the placement of LILO vs the jumpers, and also-- about editing from the rescue mode-- how do i pull up a "Joe" for example?)
  8. Thank you for your feedback on this issue. so far everything is working perfectly-- albeit, i completely started over-- it just didn't make any sense to me to try to start "undoing" problems i may have experienced due to simply "trying unusual configuration" (i.e. nothing but IceWM, etc.... not that it's THAT unusual, but...) so everything's okay now. RESOLVED. (edit: moved extensive commentary to new thread-- considering relevancy. sorry for any confusion)
  9. SYS: Mandriva 2007 FREE (4-CD ISO install - did NOT copy installers to hdd) 1.4 GHz - AMD Athlon something-or-other... 640 RAM 20GB HDD (just for tryin' mandriva) Monitor - Multiview E750 Card - NVIDIA G-force Legacy (g2?) after following the step-by-step nvidia installation listed here at mandrivausers, i can no longer get to Run Leve 3 using INIT 3 from CLI i proceeded like so: su init 3 binutils (didn't need it) chmod Nvidia-- well-- i didn't D/L it so i had to go back and start over! su pass, etc., figure out which dir i was supposed to be for the NVIDIA file to chmod, etc init 3 chmod +x NVIDIA-Lin* ./NVIDIA-Lin* proceed through install process till it determines i needed the KERNEL-SOURCE start over urpmi KERNELSOURCE - (option 10, same as i selected during primary install)) begin process again... su pass init 3 -- nothing. no change to "run level 3" it seems that i can't get the system to go to run-level-3 from the CLI as root. i've tried both [ su ] and [ su - ]. i tried running the NVIDIA installer w/out going to init 3 and i only get as far as the first screen because it can't run / install from within the running X-Server. ideas? this is my first day w/ Mandriva. i've got some experience w/ FC5, but not a whole lot. so far, i like what i see here in Mandriva. knowing linux "issues", i dont' find this to be particularly unusual, so i trust it's a simple resolve. EDIT: i forgot to mention this important oddity - if i use the mouse from IceWM to select "Logout", the system continually goes to a sort of Installation screen. i wasn't sure at first, and i did proceed through a few of the screens, only to realize that it appeard to be the same as when i was using the ISO CD's (only the display was 1280 X 10.., etc, so it looked a little diferent) -- the point being-- why does it keep trying to go through the install process upon "Logout". it's as if there's a user running in there behind my primary user which is stuck at the process of step-one-install. weird. additionally, trying a workaround w/ this NVIDIA issue, i got into the Mandriva Sys config area-- got into "Change Display settings" and the screen goes all blue w/ the X in the middle (you know the one..) and tells me that the display on :0 couldn't be started because there's already a display there. it wanted to try another number above :7, or try again on :0. i tried again on :0, it goes back to the desktop momentarily, but after about a second or two, back to complain w/ the same error again. this time selecting "yes" (vs no for :0), and i go out to that "Installation" screen-- previously described. (like the CD-ROM installations, but just a little different-- asking for Language, etc.) if needed, i have no problem doing a clean install again-- though i don't look forward to the package installs again. maybe i can reinstall, but leave the "packages" on there? thanks. sorry for rambling-- but i figured, rather than practically "cross-posting", i'd try to get it all covered right here. sorry for so much text.
