  1. Hi all!

From a lot of time I installed my Sitecom WL-170 wireless PCMCIA card on Mandriva 2007 and with ndiswrapper I surfed the web without problems. A couple days ago I discovered some new drivers for my card and I installed them. I took them from here. My card uses Rt61 driver.

However, now I can't acces to my wireless home network. I found 2 active interface, ra0 and wlan0. I can see my card works, I can see my home network BUT there's always WEP encryption while I use WPA. I think the problem is in WPA settings but I could have no idea. At least I can unistall Rt61 driver and use ndiswprapper but I don't know how to do it.

    Can you tell me something?

    Thanks in advance.

  2. lots of people can make one - anyone with kernel programming knowledge and the specs for the device, probably. i'm not sure anyone here can, but...someone out there can.

You could always try convincing US Robotics to do it, but I don't think you'll have much luck there.

Do you know someone can do this?

  3. What is it that you still see in English?

For example, my terminal is all in English, I have "FIle - Edit - View - Terminal - Tabs - Help" on the up bar; right-click on Terminal gives me "Open terminal - Open tab - Close windows - Change profile..."; on desktop I have "Applications - Places - System". If I log-out and select Italian I expect all is in Italian, not only something. Firefox now is in Italian, after I uninstalled previous verions and installed Firefox 2. OpenOffice needed a language change: after I did it now is in Italian. "Confogure your computer" is also all in English. I'll try to switch on more times the language with Gnome...

I hope these info could be useful to understand what's going on...

  4. YEEEEEAH!

    Problem with Mozilla: status SOLVED.

With "urpme" I uninstalled the previous version, downloaded the last version and now it's working fine in Italian.

Problem with English/Italian: NEAR TO BE SOLVED.

I think at this time that Mandriva 2007 isn't fully traslated into Italian but I have to tell I'm very happy that is working fine. Of course I'll wait for your advices about it.

One more time I have to thank all the users that used their time to help me. :P

  5. Hi all!

    Solved a bit of problems:

#1: now mozilla is in Italian. I downloaded Firefox 2.0.0.2, with urpme I removed Firefox 1.5.0 and installed the new Firefox. But now I can't find where is this new Firefox 'cause on "Applications -> Internet -> Navigatori web" there's only Ephifany. But, if from root I type "cd /home/USER/Desktop/firefox" and type "./firefox" Firefox in Italian is on.

#2: I did a log-out from the session and, in the log-in, I saw an option about changing language in Gnome. I choosed Italian and now more thing are in Italian on Mandriva. Terminal is still in English, like "Application - Places - System" but at the right-clic with mouse I see "Annulla - Taglia - Copia...", that is Italian.

So the big problem now is: where's Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.2? How can I start it without Terminal?

  6. Pluto, don't worry about posting in the wrong section, we all do it at times. I've had mine moved more than once. :P I think the biggest problem you're having is what tyme said, not everything is translated into Italian. I always choose English, but my boys choose Italian, but there is still some things written in English in their applications.

With Firefox, did you download it off the Italian or English site?

    Kieth

Hi Kieth! So you can confirm me that there isn't full Italian translation for Mandriva 2007?

About Firefox, I didn't understand nothing at all. Here's some command resulst:

    # rpm -qa | grep -i firefox

    libmozilla-firefox1.5.0.10-1.5.0.10-2mdv2007.0

    mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.10-2mdv2007.0

    libmozilla-firefox1.5.0.7-1.5.0.7-1mdv2007.0

    mozilla-firefox-it-1.5.0.10-1mdv2007.0

    # urpmi mozilla-firefox-it-1.5.0.7-1mdv2007.0.i586.rpm

unable to access rpm file [mozilla-firefox-it-1.5.0.7-1mdv2007.0.i586.rpm]

    error registering local packages

    # urpmi mozilla-firefox-it

    The package(s) are already installed

but if I choose Italian language from "Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> General -> Languages" and if I close Firefox and re-open it, it's still in English.

  7. Hi!

First I want to say sorry for my post, I posted it in the wrong section. Second, I want to thank all answered me. I have full support here than the italian Mandriva forum.

Talking about the problem, I have several times tried "urpmi firefox" but I can't have Firefox 2 and I have always it in English. There's no way to download ie. Italian language for Gnome? Or can I turn into KDE from Gnome? Could I solve my problems in this way? I really would enjoy my Mandriva full in Italian...

  8. Hi all!

I'm Italian but my Mandriva is in english for the major part.

#1. Firefox is in english and if I try to select "Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Edit languages" I see only "Italian - it". If I select it nothing changes.

#2. I have "Applications -> Sistema -> Configurazione -> Configure your computer". Sistema&Configurazione are in Italian for example.

#3. If I go to "Configure your computer -> System -> Select the language..." and I select "Italy", I see "The change is done, but to be effective you must logout". I do it and nothing changes.

#4. If I have right-click with mouse I have "undo, cut, copy, paste...." but I would it in Italian.

I hope you can help me 'cause on the italian Mandriva forum no one helped me. I use Gnome instead of KDE and if you need further nfo let me know.

  9. Hi all!

I'm writing from Mandriva 2007, now it's working! Here's my solution.

    Step #1: I installed Mandriva 2007;

    Step #2: from here I downloaded ndiswrapper 1.38 and installed it. See here for installation info;

Step #3: After I installed the appropriate driver for my card (in this case Rt61.INF) and kept on ndiswrapper with "modoprobe ndiswrapper" I went to "Configure your computer -> Network & Internet -> Setup a new network...." and I confgured my card from here.

Step #4: If you have a WPA encryption you'll be asked to install "wpa_supplicant". Insert Mandriva 2007 DVD and install it.

Step #5: configure your card and you'll be ok!

I hope this will be useful. If someone finds something wrong please write it in order to know all. See you! :D

  10. What is your network ESSID? (What do you call your network?)

At what point did it not work?

Please give step by step details of what you have done. I listed a process, well, I listed 2 processes. Which did not work?

As root in a console, type "lsmod" and report here what it says.

    Fresh news!

I send a mail to Sitecom and they answered me that Sitecom WL-170 uses "ralink rt2561 chipset"!

So rt61 doesn't work properly! Now the problem is find this driver I think... BTW, I post some results:

let me know what do you think...

  11. You need to use a newer version if ndiswrapper. Since there are none in the Mandriva rpms, we can compile it and install it on your machine. Just to note, you must have only one driver installed at a time. In a console, and as the root user, type "ndiswrapper -r [driver name]" for each driver that does not work. Put the driver name in the brackets, and do not use the brackets! The driver which ndiswrapper reports as "driver present" is the one to keep. It appears to be the rt61 driver. You could try this first to see if the current ndiswrapper will work. But I had to compile it in order to use it in a 64 bit system.

Go to this site and download the 1.38 sources.

Next, in a console as root, type "urpme ndiswrapper" , This removes the current software.

Then as a regular user, go to the download of ndiswrapper-1.38.tar.gz and type "tar -xjf ndiswrapper-1.38.tar.gz" . This will create a folder with a bunch of stuff in it.

Next, as root in a console, type "urpmi kernel-source-2.6.17.11mdv-1-1mdv2007.0.i586.rpm"

Then, navigate into the directory created by unpacking the ndiswrapper tarball. In that directory, in a console, type "make install".

Next, type "modprobe -a" and then "modprobe ndiswrapper"

Next type "ndiswrapper -i filename.INF" where the inf is found in your windows directory.

Then, type "ndiswrapper -l" to see if the all is well.

Then type "iwconfig". Look for an ESSID or an access point to associate with. When you see it, type "iwconfig wlan0 essid NAME" and see if the lights come to life.

Hi, unfortunately this way doesnt' work. At this time, the only way I can see the card on is with original Mandriva 2006 kernel and its source. I have also installed ndiswrapper 1.38 and loaded rt61 driver. I can see my network, the card on wlan0 but when I type "iwconfig wlan0 essid MY_ESSID" nothing changes. Essid is always "off/any" and I see my network WEP encrypted when I use a WPA encryption with Windows.

I tried this http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/mediawiki/index.php/WPA but of course I'm stucked at very beginning, when I have to create(?) a ".config file". I can't make it works.

If you need more info (ie. type this and write what you see) let me know. I want to win this battle! :wall:

  12. What makes you think (where did you read) that's the driver for your card? I don't think that's the driver for you?

What drivers work with your card using Windows?

In Windows the driver is: C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\rt61.sys and my card works perfectly. So in Mandriva I used ndiswrapper with the rt61.INF that is on card's installation cd. I thought it worked but instead no. :wall:
