  1. I'll be honest with you, since I've been using MDV (since version 7) I have noticed that anytime I try and copy LARGE amounts of data from 1 drive/directory to another, IF IT STARTS it will usually fail with no error. I am pretty much ALWAYS going from ext3 to ext3, but regardless of whether I am on the same PC or across a small LAN it just oesnt seem to work. now as someone else suggested earlier, CLI cp almost ALWAYS works. But anything w/in konqueror almost always fails. I download everything from the net into a special directory on a specific drive. Then I usually will move certain blocks of data to other areas, other pc's invariably if I choose large blocks of data (over a few hundred MB) it just doesnt work. anyone else having issues like that? j
  2. since its $16 here in the states is there anything in it that we dont know in the public eye yet? like maybe the magic of porting it to 2008? heres the link for those of you w/o a borders http://www.lpmagazine.org/prt/view/about-t.../issue/707.html
  3. Anyone see that Linux + magazine this month has MDV2008 AND MCNL oronto on their cover discs? very cool, maybe with this getting to more folks the 2008 update will have more folks involved!
  4. EXCELLENT great information, thanks! j
  5. Excellent jump off point thanks BTW by the time he figures out how to get around this I hope to have a hardware solution installed (and locked in my closet) thanks j
  6. hey guys, my 2 y/o's grandma is bringing him a new "pc interactive gaming extraveganza etc" this weekend as a belated xmas gift. it of course requires a windows pc to run, and an internet connection. now i know he's only 2 (not even actually about 20 months), but he is VERY smart. he has already mastered every remote control in the house. so i have no doubt that web surfing will be pretty simple and fascinating to him after a while. his pc will be setup next to his moms in her home office so in THEORY there shouldnt be an issue, but we all know how sneaky kids are. the GOOD news is that, moms mandriva pc sits right next to his and could EASILY be put to use as a web filter. YEARS ago I used to use FREESCO as my router/firewall and LOVED IT! but that pretty much requires a dedicated pc, so i was hoping someone might recommend some software that I could load on her MDV pc and then a "how to" that would allow me to direct it at HIS ip address (I could set his to static inside my network) and have his content filtered. the more I type the more ideas I get, so please someone stop my insanity and toss me a bone! any and all input welcome! j [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  7. all together now: www.linuxant.com its free to try and $20 if it works its the best $20 I've ever spent. they license it to your MAC address, so for example on my laptop where I use 4 different distros for testing, i can use it in all 4 w/ NO problemo. a lot of purinsts haveissues because its close sources but for me it works, works everytime and i get a stronger signal than w/ ndiswrapper. but thats just my 2 cts
  8. actually i disagree, i dont think its size as much as it is "bling" my 3 year old creative zen Xtra 20GB (can be had on ebay every day for $40) plugs into ANYTHING and is grag and drp. now if you want playlists and artist info and all that crap then yes you need to use their (windows) software. however if you just want mp3's then drag away!
  9. you can do a LOT in 128MB you just have to be willing to WORK at it. my brother is using xp on 128MB on a 866MHZ cpu and it runs, very slowly (he has office XP installed as well), but its VERY slow and for me (who runs an X2 at 5600 w/ 4GB of ram) its unusable. however, for your "friend" you have a few options, some good, some bad. LinXP is very much like windows xp, I';ve only used it briefly, but it does mimic xp a lot. however the ULTIMITE (in my opinion) xp look a like is going to be Xabdros. They have an Open Community Edition thats free, but I spent the $80 and bought the boxed version for several reasons, but primarily because it has a WONDERFUL NTFS interface built in. It os proprietary code (which is why its not ion their free version) written by paragon, thatallows you to plug and play in a windows network as WELL as you can just slap any NTFS drive in the same box and Xandros can read and write it. personally I keep coming BACK to MDV because bottom line, for ME, it does what i want, the way I want, in the things that are most important to me xandros HAS a $40 home edition and it WILL "run" on 128MB of ram, but as MANY folks have said, there is a HUGE diffeence between running and being usable: Processor: Any Intel Pentium or Celeron processor. Any AMD K6/II/III, Duron, Athlon, Athlon XP/MP processor. At least 450 MHz recommended. RAM: Min 128 MB required, 256 MB recommended. 1.5 GB available space on hard drive, 3 GB available space recommended. Additional Requirements: Bootable CD-ROM www.xandros.com
  10. not having seen it yet what does pulse audio have that amarok fdoesnt>? is there a website i can read up on it? j
  11. when you say"it was SHOWING it as a RAR file" are you saying that graphically the ICON is showing as a RAR type file? because if thats what you mean than so far you have everything you need, but as suggested before you DONT need to UNRAR it before you burn it. if you tell us what cd burner your using we can probably walk you through burinng an image. personally although i have tried kubu and MDV i always keep coming back to MDV, for ME, the tools that you need are located in much more logical ways and appear to be more traditionally linux standard than kubu. the one thing i DO like about KUBU over MDV is that they have a GOOD set of tools to allow yuo to "roll your own" with good documentation. where as MDV just made so many upgrades w/ 2008 that what USED to work, doesnt. there are several small groups of folks world wide ttyin to come up w/ some alternatives, but as im sure you can imagibne w/o good docs its VERY slow and hard work, j
  12. it could very well be. when you get your cli are you prompted to login or is it straight to a cli? have you tried STARTx? j
  13. mindwave

    roll your own

ian cool, thanks for the link, i'll go check it ou t now! j
  14. mindwave

    roll your own

ok, so i finally gave in, and moved from spring to 2008. anyone know if 2008.1 (or whatever) will include any more "roll your own" abilities ala fedora's revisor? i know that there are some 2008 tools available, but the documentation is terrible. and i know that since chrisB retired there are some folks scattered about the planet working on updating MCNL, but like me everyone has their own priorities. i would just think that with almost EVERY major distro now having some sort of integration abilities that allow, roll your own, remaster and USB Key's that MDV shouldnt be too far behind? j [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  15. yeah i figured the image was messed up i was just wondering if there was a way to fix it. luckily i had stored another copy on another pc, and reburned that and everything went well thanks j
  16. yup that did the trick thanks
  17. ok, i'm sure i did smething, but i cant figure out what. i reboot this evening to start off my session, and all of a sudden MCC (which i shave a s/c on my desktop for) is gone the s/c is gone and so is the link under system/configure. please anyone have any ideas on getting it back? thanks j
  18. I was among those luck folks who were the early seeders when 2008 was released. so i grabbed it, seeded it for a few weeks, and in the meantime burned it and installed it on my laptop. The machine I had it seeded from was my XP pc, so that i could do my real work on MDV. That pc had a HD issuea few weeks ago and although i didnt THINK that the hd the ISO was on was affected, it may appear otherwise right now. I was moving things around and went to install 2008 on another pc when I realized i couldnt find my original DVD. So i went to burn another. Now when using Nero I get an error saying (something like) the size doesnt match the length. Then I'm presented with a screen which has a few options, one of which is to change the block number from 2048 to 2053 and enter the length of the header and the tail end in block #'s If I ignore the warning nero will perform the burn but then error out at the end saying the media is incompatible with the source length. I have another cd buring app called SONIC, that reports no error, performs the burn, when you reboot it gives ONE line of test "Syslinux" and then nothing. Now I KNOW I could dload the 'free' version but as we have seen in the forums lately there is some small differences between the PP version and the free versions, mostly (as far as I'm concerned) dealing with number of cpu's and amount of ram (I have an AMD X2 and 4GB of ram) anyone have any ideas? is this recoverable or will i just have to make due w/ 2007.1? Thanks J
  19. i have to admit the PP edition was worth it in building my new system. free drivers! no scouring!
  20. i think you'd run into a WRSE issue w/ a USB modem than w/ a true serial modem. go to ebay, their $10 orbetter yet go to LINUXANT.com and use what you have! j
  21. well a week PLUS and things are humming. i know that this is pretty bare install, but it is FLYING. everything is appearing instantly as it should. i havent added the MCNL scripts yet to start my backups, but id dont think that will be an issue. and there is a definate difference at 1280x1024 with the new PCI-E card vs the old on board i was using. however, and i know weveseen this before, the 256MB on the vid card takes away from the total ram. i have 4GB on the MB and only see 3.75gb in MDV but SHAZAM its fast. i cant wait until i get stable again and start orking on some more intensive stuff. j
  22. well if you've seen any of my past posts you know that one of my objectives was to create a system that i could use as a live DVD and a restore dvd all in one swoop. the idea being that when (not if) I blow the system up i just pop in the dvd, reboot, reinstall to HD and away we go. for 2007.1 this has worked AMAZINGly well. the OTHER idea, was that when i upgraded my hardware (which i do about once a year or so, i could just pop the dvd into the new pc and reinstall to the HD and away we go. well this weekend I went from an intel duo core 3.4GHZ system to and AMD x2 5.6GHZ system with a gigabit lan and a PCI-E 256MB vid card plus 4GB of ram. bought a new 500gb hd, slapped it in, put my dvd in, that I had JUST created on my old system, booted up created a 60GB "/" partition and ran the HD install script. Everything went well (if not a little faster!) went to reboot, and got a kernel panic stop. So I started over, tried again, no go. It APPEARS to me anyway, that the HW differences between my old intel duo core setup, and my new AMD setup if FAR to different to support a proper HD install. So I did my minimal 2007.1 install (still DF’s to 3.2 GB) and will start to rebuild from my own process (http://www.thehess.org/Rollyourown1.html) This may be self evident to a lot of folks, I just think that ots interesting that the live DVD works and runs AMAZINGLY quick, but that I couldn’t use THAT to do a HD install. Oh well something else for the informationals. J
  23. there are a BUNCH of folks working on this same issue (and several others) unfortunately the writer of MCNL claims she's retired. but it looks like a LOT of re-writing will be needed to get 2008 to talk. take a look at http://www.thehess.org/Rollyourown1.html for how i got 2007.1 working, unfortunately its not just as easy as recopying it all over to 2008, wish it was. j
  24. if you get that to work, many of us will raise you to HERO status. the originator of MCNL has retired, before she finished work on 2008. APPARENTLY 2008 is so substantially different that aGREAT deal of re-writing of the mklivecd scripts would have to be done in order to get 2008 to run. I personally have just recently printed out the scripts and stated going through them. but i know there are a few other folks working on it as well! i wonder if the corp will put out a decent 2008 flash? j
  25. have you ever used onboard video? notice any differences in that?>? seems as though none of the MB's ive tried this year w/ onboard video will support the 3rd effects, and i know its just eye candy, but on a pc like what i'm putting together it shouldbt be much of a strain either. J
