  1. Glad to see, that wardevil's suggestions worked for You, as I have similar issue, which I will try to resolve at weekend. At the moment I don't have access to my Mandriva 2007. BTW, these crashes are very frustrating.
  2. Ever tried to use a newer version of Mandriva? If not, maybe It's a good moment ;)
  3. Thought GNOME is less resource-hungry than KDE, and so could be ran on slower machines. Is 192 MB of RAM still not enough?
  4. Do You have access to the Internet on Your laptop? If so, then configure Your Mandriva repositories using easy-urpmi, and then type in console as a root rpm qa | grep glib This will show You what "glib packages" have You got installed on Your system. Then it will be best to uninstall them with urpme package_name (probably glib_with_version_number) and after that install a new glib library by typing urpmi glib Maybe this will help.
  5. No, You don't have to pay for those codecs. The "no-free" designation in this case means it's not a Free/Open Software. The only thing You have to do, is to add PLF Non-Free to Your Mandriva repositories. The easiest way is to use easy-urpmi.

    USB Modem

Hmm, and what precisely You want to do? Properly configure Your DSL-modem, or a dial-up one for your boss? And what's "hard" for You to follow on the instructions given on the website I posted above?
  7. I'll surely make use of Your suggestion, as soon as I will be back home. At the moment I'm away, so have to use Windows  When it comes to using antivirus on Linux...well, I think it's a matter of personal choice. As I said before, never enough security (to me) ;) . Besides I have Windows XP on the same computer, so better to be double secured :P

    USB Modem

Hi kyzzar! Have You tried to follow the instructions on this website? If not, then maybe they would be of much help to You.
  9. And could You explain why You've chosen Mandrake 10.0 instead of a newer version? Maybe the issues You described wouldn't exist in Mandriva 2006 or 2007.
  10. Well, my problem did appear first when I installed Mandriva Free 2007. Before that, I never had it with Power Pack... Funny thing. Guided by some suggestions, that this problem occurs because of some "USB issues", I disconnected my GamePad, which is a USB device. And since then the problem didn't come out. Nonetheless I still want to compile a new kernel to optimize my OS.
  11. They say Linux is safe and doesn't need antivirus. Maybe. But when avast is giving a free licence for it's Linux Home Edition antivirus software, why not to try it? Never enough security. So I downloaded it and registered for a free code. Installation proceeded without problems, but they did appear after. When I'm running avast from CL, it automatically scans my hdd and everything seems to be O.K. But when I'm trying to run it in a GUI mode, I usually got this [zibi1981@localhost ~]$ avastgui (process:6374): Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib (process:6374): Gdk-WARNING **: can not set locale modifiers sometimes this (process:6118): Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib (process:6118): Gdk-WARNING **: can not set locale modifiers ** (avastgui:6118): WARNING **: Cannot load font for XLFD '-urw-helvetica-medium-r-normal--1-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-13 ** (avastgui:6118): WARNING **: Cannot load font for XLFD '-urw-helvetica-bold-r-normal--1-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-13 and always this (see attached thumbnails) How to resolve this?
  12. I have the same problem with aMule crashing every time I try to close active window, i.e. search or a new message window (most often spam messages). If it's related to wxGTK, then how I can change it? [zibi1981@localhost ~]$ rpm -qa | grep wxGTK wxGTK2.6-2.6.3-7mdv2007.0 In my repositories I have only [zibi1981@localhost ~]$ urpmq -i wxGTK Name : wxGTK Version : 2.4.2 Release : 12mdv2007.0 Group : System/Libraries Size : 787689 Architecture: i586 Summary : GTK+ port of the wxWindows library
  13. Thanks for Your response guys. Well, still nothing... [root@localhost zibi1981]# locate aticonfig locate: fatal error: Could not find user database '/var/lib/slocate/slocate.db': No such file or directory And the same is when I'm trying to find aticonfig via Menu -> Search -> Find files. Yes, it is, but now I'm using ATI Proprietary Driver ver. 8.33.6, which I got from ATI's official website, and after some struggle managed to install it correctly lately. The drivers You pointed are 8.28.8. It's mentioned there, that aticonfig should be installed in /usr/bin, but I don't have it in this location  I did that, and of course added few mentioned above lines to my xorg.conf, but after restart nothing has changed in the matter. Still maximum resolution I could set was 800x600 @ 75Hz.
  14. According to my information, which of course I found on the web, one of the most anticipated game of the 2007, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, is going to be released on both, Windows and Linux platforms. Form me it's an excellent news, as I decided to move to ETQW from Battlefield 2 some months ago, before I even got any interests in Linux. And now there is a strong chance I'm gonna play it on my Mandriva Free 2007 :woot_jump: Form more info: http://www.enemyterritory.com/ http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/enemyter...?q=quake%20wars
  15. Hehe, looks kinda funny It reminds me all the Manga stuff, especially when watching the video from Youtube. Not my style, but if someone is a MMORPG maniac, then I think this game is something one should interest in.
  16. And what about FreeCiv? Does anyone like strategy games? B)
  17. I wish it would be so simple  [root@localhost zibi1981]# aticonfig --initial bash: aticonfig: command not found
  18. You mean the problem with booting up or fglrx drivers?
  19. I had many problems with installing ATI propietary driver for my Radeon X800Pro, which I described on the forum. Finally I managed to do it, but another problem has emerged. Before successful installation of the driver version 8.33.6, I had my monitor set to 1024x768 @ 100Mhz. I was able to get acces to this settings by editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf. It was very simple. Just needed to tape in console [zibi1981@localhost ~]$ gtf 1024 768 100 # 1024x768 @ 100.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 81.40 kHz; pclk: 113.31 MHz Modeline "1024x768_100.00" 113.31 1024 1096 1208 1392 768 769 772 814 -HSync +Vsync and paste the output in the "monitor" section of the xorg.conf. But after I did install ATI proprietary driver, which did some changes in my xorg.conf, after restart I got my monitor set to 1024x768 @ 75 Hz. The problem is, that 75 Hz is the highest refresh rate I can set. Doing the same trick as before (with gtf in console) don't work at all. When I do that, after restart I have 800x600 @ 75, as the "highest" settings. Looking for a clue. Maybe someone know how to change resolution and monitor refresh rate on ATI proprietary driver? Unfortunatelly aticonfig command don't work  [zibi1981@localhost ~]$ aticonfig --initial bash: aticonfig: command not found [zibi1981@localhost ~]$ aticonfig bash: aticonfig: command not found And here is my current xorg.conf, if someone would want to take a look (I removed # 1024x768 @ 100.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 81.40 kHz; pclk: 113.31 MHz Modeline "1024x768_100.00" 113.31 1024 1096 1208 1392 768 769 772 814 -HSync +Vsync from it, because I don't like to work in 800x600) # File generated by XFdrake (rev 57713) # ********************************************************************** # Refer to the xorg.conf man page for details about the format of # this file. # ********************************************************************** Section "Files" # font server independent of the X server to render fonts. 20. Well, it looks like I'll have to try to compile a new kernel, althought I'm expecting many other issues to emerge. Especially considering that I'm using ATI drivers. On the forums, to which You gave a link, someone has written that But if this is the only way to resolve this very irritating problem, I'll try. Today my Mandriva hang up 4 or 5 times in a row on "Setting hostname localhost :"... :angry2:
  21. I have Radeon X800Pro and finally I've managed to properly install ATI's drivers version 8.33.6. But when it comes to monitor's refresh rate I did it before that succes using another way, and that was: 1. Type in console [zibi1981@localhost ~]$ gtf 1024 768 100 where 1024 768 is screen resolution (of course You can choose another, which is appropriate for You), and 100 is refresh rate in Hz. 2. Press Enter and copy the output. In my case it was # 1024x768 @ 100.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 81.40 kHz; pclk: 113.31 MHz Modeline "1024x768_100.00" 113.31 1024 1096 1208 1392 768 769 772 814 -HSync +Vsync 3. Log in as root (su and password when prompted). 4. Open /etc/X11/xorg.conf in a text editor, i.e. [root@localhost zibi1981]# kwrite /etc/X11/xorg.conf 5. Add the copied text in appropriate place and save changes. That's how it looks in my xorg.conf Section "Monitor" Identifier "monitor1" VendorName "Sony" ModelName "CPD E-230" HorizSync 37-85.0 VertRefresh 48-170 # TV fullscreen mode or DVD fullscreen output. # 768x576 @ 79 Hz, 50 kHz hsync ModeLine "768x576" 50.00 768 832 846 1000 576 590 595 630 # 768x576 @ 100 Hz, 61.6 kHz hsync ModeLine "768x576" 63.07 768 800 960 1024 576 578 590 616 # 1024x768 @ 100.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 81.40 kHz; pclk: 113.31 MHz Modeline "1024x768_100.00" 113.31 1024 1096 1208 1392 768 769 772 814 -HSync +Vsync EndSection 6. Now restart or logout and login. On desktop press the right mouse button, choose "Desktop Configuration", and then "Display" to determine the screen resolution and refresh rate. Now O.K. and another logout and login. Hope this will help ;)
  22. No, I have ASUS A7V600-X motherboard with VIA chipset. And I'm still looking for a solution...
  23. Today I had to reinstall my Mandriva Free 2007, but the problem didn't dissapear. Maybe someone has found something that could help to resolve this issue?
  24. Hmm, /var/log/messages file is full of data, but no sign of "Setting hostname localhost" or similar. Still looking for a solution. It's quite intriguing to me why I have such a problem with Mandriva Free 2007, while didn't have with Mandriva 2007 PP...
  25. I'm using KMail, because it's my second favourite (after The Bat!) e-mail client. As far as I know The Bat! is only for Windows at the moment, so I'll keep stick to KMail :D
