  1. I just installed Slack 9.1 on a second computer, still running MDK on the main one, and I like it alot, it boots up in about 35 seconds on a PIII 450,with 256 megs of ram (took over 2 minutes with MDK) and I can actually compile programs now, that I wasn't able to for one reason or another with MDK. The install is pretty straight forward, and not as hard as everyone makes it out to be, (I tried VectorLinux, sure it was an easier install, but then to get it up to a computer that did more than check email, and browse the web, the fun began... :D) Trying different things, I've had to reinstall twice now, gotta learn somehow, right? two big things that took me awhile, and couldn't find awnsers to in the forums, or in the book online, is 1. edit fstab and add user to the list before the "0 0" in cdrom and floppy so that any user can mount them, not just root. and... 2. if you use ADSL, and it says connect, but doesn't let you log in, try typing "server" in the DNS section of adsl-setup (took me about 3 hours to figure that one out, guess I should read more carefully next time...) and be sure and know all the specs on your video card, and monitor, you'll have to enter them manually. All in all, I like slackware alot, last time I tried it was 2.0, and the overall install, and loading hasn't changed much, which is good, I think? Goodluck with your venture, the two prblems I mentioned above were really the only trouble I've had with it so far, and once I figured them out, it was a breeze
  2. Ok, the link above is the same one, that'll teach me to type before I click.... Oh well.... :D
  3. ]http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=8070 look at this link, I just purchased the Epson Stylus CX3200, and 9.1 works with it great, all functions are supported, even have it printing across the network. I'd highjly recomend this printer. :D
  4. I've been on here for a few months, and have solved things that have come up, with the handy search. And want to give back when I can :)
  5. picked up a Epson Stylus CX3200, printer/copier/scanner all in one deal, $179 CND, with a 30 dollar mail in rebate, running 9.1, and everything set up great, the copier works without the computer, and has great quality, color, and b/w, the drivers for both the scanner, and printer, are available with 9.1, setting it up took about 10 minutes, and most of that time was waiting for stuff to install, very happy with the printer, and would recomend it to anyone that needs a good printer/copier/scanner all in one. just thought I'd share this, if this is the wrong forum, I apologize. :D
  6. I use MDK because I have to share the computer with 3 other people (fiance and 2 teens). and wanted something I could get up and running quickly, and easly, I've used other Distros in the past, Slackware (8 years ago), and RedHat 5.2, Plus MDK works, it's the distro I've told friends about who are sick of "won't mention the product here" and want to try something different.
  7. Thanks for all the help, I am getting there, I no longer see the Forbidden screen, when doing a localhost, or http:/<ipaddress>, but the Index.shtml one, letting me know it's working now. I'll keep playing around, and see if I can get it to display the page I made. Thanks again for all the help.

Hope this helps.
  9. Good question.... I have no idea, I have no firewall set, yet... how would I check that? It sounds like thats what it is, though, doesn't it? Thanks
  10. I am trying to set up a small webpage, and setup apache used webmin, and isntructions from a webpage, I get this message when I do a "Http:localhost" FORBIDEN You do now have permission to access / on <IP ADDRESS> port 80, I have set the folder to use to "Share" set all the files to read by everyone, and here is my Vhost.conf: It seems to be a permissions problem, but not sure what else to check, or if I have something installed wrong, any help would be most apriciated Thank you.
  11. "Why do _YOU_ use linux?" It does everything that we need, and then some, been using it off and on for 8 years now, and finally decided to make the 2 computers tools again, and not products, running Mandrake 9.1 on both, and both running great. "What interests _YOU_ about linux?" Ever since the first Linux I tried, Slackware (something) with a Linux book I bought in 95, I've been curious about it, and where it's been, and where it's going. "Why don't _YOU_ use a Microsoft, Mac, or other OS's (including *BSD, etc.)?" MS - Have used MS since DOS 2.1 on an 8088 20 years ago, and got tired of the viruses, spyware, adware, EULA, and given the "Honor" of using the product, instead of purchasing it. Mac - Never owned a mac. Other OS's - Since the book I bought in 95, I've liked linux, and what it's doing. "What made _YOU_ start using linux?" The book I bought about linux 8 years ago, was on sale for 5 bucks, ran it on a 486/75 Laptop for over 2 years before the laptop died. have used a few others since then, and have seen it come a long way, and can only image where it is going.
  12. have 9.1 installed on 2 computers, running fine on both, but one has no CD-Rom, it messed up right after I got it installed, and when I run the computer with a CD-Rom it just has a cursor in the top left hand corner, and nothing else, so what I want to do is set up the second computer so I can load the stuff I need to get the internet installed, as well as others that ask for CD 1 2 or 3, is there a way to have it so I can read the CD from the computer that has the working CD-Rom across the network? Thanks for the help, considering the troubles I had when I had an old copy of Slackware from 95, this is fun.... :D
  13. Got it up and running, but can't seem to run any CD-Rom on it now, new question, that I'll post a new topic on.
  14. Was trying to avoid ripping both computers apart again, but seems the easiest way, knew about the PLF stuff did it on the first computer, and updated alot of stuff, thanks for your help.
