  2. Thank for replying. I did the urpmi command as suggested and got -- [root@localhost local]# urpmi kernel-source The package(s) are already installed The following package names were assumed: kernel-source-2.6 -- Then I went ahead and tryied to install the 537EP driver without success. I got (after running make clean to cleanup previous stuffs) -- [root@localhost intel-537EP-2.60.80.0-mdk10-up]# make 537 Module precompile check Current running kernel is: 2.6.12-15mdk /lib/modules... autoconf.h exists diff: /boot/vmlinuz.autoconf.h: No such file or directory autoconf.h matches running kernel diff: /boot/vmlinuz.version.h: No such file or directory version.h matches running kernel 2.6.12-15mdk make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/local/537EP/intel-537EP-2.60.80.0-mdk10-up/coredrv' make -C /lib/modules/2.6.12-15mdk/build SUBDIRS=/usr/local/537EP/intel-537EP-2.60.80.0-mdk10-up/coredrv modules make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.12-15mdk' WARNING: Symbol version dump /usr/src/linux-2.6.12-15mdk/Module.symvers is missing; modules will have no dependencies and modversions. 3. Hi I'm trying to install the driver for 537EP. It needs the kernel source header. I went to Mandriva contrl center, search for kernel, and tried to install kernel-source-2.6-2.6.12-15mdk which is on the special edition Mandriva 2006 DVD. Unfortunately, a small window pops up complaining The following package has bad signatures: kernel-source-2.6-2.6.12-15mdk: Missing signature ((no key found) OK) Do you want to continue installation? "No" (<- default) "Yes" If I choose "yes" despite the bad signature, Mandriva control center looks like it installing this kernel source, but then, this file shows up as uninstalled. Are there any workaround? Will updating the kernel install it? I have 2006 Mandriva, not the latest 2007. I just want to install the 2006 kernel. Alternatively, are there any workaround to install the 537EP driver (that does not require the kernel source)? I'm using http://www.intel.com/design/modems/support/drivers.htm given to me by MadTux (who made this PC). Sheng-Chieh
  4. Have you tried the CUPS server webpage? Worked for me although Mandrake Control Center didn't. http://localhost:631 (this link is on your machine) Sheng-Chieh
  5. Have you tried once w/o the firewall to be sure that is the proble? I.e., turn off the firewall, quickly see if you connect w/ TB, turn back on the firewall. Sheng-Chieh
  6. How is this page behaving for firefox, sea monkey, opera, etc? Just curious. Sheng-Chieh
  7. But can gnucash do single accounting? That's what stopped me earlier. And I'm using checkbook tracking (CBT). I think CBT is going downhill (not enough users, update, etc) and looking to change again. I only need very basic checkbook recordkeeping - no fancy accounting - and rather not learn double accounting if I don't have to. If not gnucash, do you have another recommendation (accounting software)? Sheng-Chieh

Usually source code have less problem with dependencies/libraries/etc. Try downloading the source from http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/ Sheng-Chieh
  9. johnh123, you should be able to install wvdial thru the control center and let Mandriva installs it, i.e., K -> system -> configuration -> configure your computer otherwise download from http://open.nit.ca/wiki/?page=WvDial As for me, I got wvdial installed. However, when I try to run it, I get an intializing modem error. I.e., $ wvdial --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.54.0 --> Warning: section [Dialer Defaults] does not exist in wvdial.conf. --> Initializing modem. --> Sending: ATZ --> Sending: ATQ0 --> Re-Sending: ATZ --> Modem not responding. $ Does this mean I have a hardware problem? Is it worth trying with a different distro? Is there I can do something without opening the box. Sheng-Chieh
  10. Thank you for replying. Yes, I know about !@#$%^ winmodem, but this machine has a real modem with a Intel chip. What is the way to figure out exactly what I have? I know it's in the system somewhere. I'll try vmware later today. The error message "expecting OK" is not much. Sheng-Chieh Typo. I mean wvdial, not vmware. Sheng-Chieh
  11. To All: I'm having trouble setting up the modem. Could you folks take a glance at my settings to see if I have any errors? I'm not able to use the Mandriva's setup because it keeps defaulting to the (kppp) "wizard" mode instead of (kppp) "manual setup". So I'm using kppp to setup things. So far, I have in kppp (comments in parentheses): ===== Accounts AT&T -- Modems Modem0 -- Graph (default settings) -- Misc (default settings) ===== Under Account:AT&T, I have -- Dial Connection name: AT&T Dialup Phone number: 3319805 6810194 Authentication: PAP/CHAP Store password: x (marked yes) Callback type: none Customize pppd arguments... (nothing) -- IP Dynamic IP address -- Gateway Default gateway -- DNS Domain name: firedragons.com Configuration: Manual DNS address list: 192.168.0.1 (Fyi, my /etc/resolv.conf is search firedragons.com nameserver 192.168.0.1 ) -- Login script Expect ID: Send rscheng@sbcglobal.net Expect word: Send <password> Expect granted Send ppp -- Execute (nothing) -- Account (nothing enabled) ===== Under Modems:Modem0, I have Device Modem name: Modem0 Modem device: /dev/ttyS0 (changed from default /dev/modem) Flow control: Hardware[CRTSCTS[ Line termination: CR Connection speed: 57600 (changed from default 115200) Use lock file x (marked enabled) Modem timeout: 60 seconds -- Modem (default settings) (Note: When I click "Query Modem ...", nothing shows up.) ===== When I try to connect using kppp, the log window says Expecting: OK and nothing more happens after several minutes. Are there any hardware configuration or obvious errors? Do I need to fiddle with Modems:Modem0:Modem:Modem Commands: and change hardware stuffs? ===== Sheng-Chieh [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  12. Just so you know, You can get gcc on window. I used to do this. http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~lcc-win32/ (lcc-win32 for window OS) The other way is to use cygwin on windwo. http://www.cygwin.com/ Sheng-Chieh p.s. not trying to push you to window. linux rules.
  13. I don't know. I can only suggest you test different configurations. I.e., 1. Change monitor (to see if this a monitor-specific problem; however it could be Mandriva's problem in not recognizing your monitor) 2. Boot with a liveCD like knoppix, Ubuntu, SimplyMepis, etc. (to see if this a Mandriva's problem) 3. Use that troublesome monitor on another machine, especially a window machine. (to see if the monitor is working) 4. etc (dream up of other tests and narrow the problem down) Sheng-Chieh
  14. Thank you! Went to http://localhost:631/ and added another printer with success. The one Mandriva control center puts in, CUPS complains that the PPD file did not match the printer? [Probably an error on Mandriva's side] Sheng-Chieh
  15. *** bump *** strange. The control center recognizes the printer and I know it prints fine from the old PC. But no printing occurs whether I print a test page or from an application. Any tips? Btw, I'm using KDE 3.4.3 & Mandriva 2006 special edition. Sheng-Chieh
  16. To All: The printer is not printing. It makes no difference if I am using an application or trying to print a test page in the control center. For test page, I've gone to control center (kcontrol) -> peripherals -> printers -> instances -> test ... A window pops up saying You are about to print a teest page of Canon BJC 1000. Do you want to continue. No problem. I press "Print Test Page". Another window shows up saying Test Page successfully sent to Canon BJC 1000. But nothing happens afterward, i.e., no printing. I know the printer is on and plugged in correctly. What else should I be checking for? Sheng-Chieh
