  1. Well I did a little search. I typed Linux Help plus my Nick in Google and a bunch of stuff came up. I'm tryin to think if this was the very first place I posted or not. I know I started using Linux about 1 1/2 yrs to 2 years ago. I had ftp premissions to a buddy's server in exchange for some games that where on mine. I noticed RH7 on his server and asked him what it was. He told me and it kind of interested me. So I downloaded it and tried it and was like. eeeeeew!!! lol. I was telling some of the racing guys about it and they laughed at me, but at the same time told me that 7 was pretty old and there was newer distros out there. So I went on a hunt and came across distrowatch and looked around and downloaded MDK 9. Played with it for a bit. I wanted to learn more so one day while out of town the wife and I went to Barnes and Noble and I came across Redhat 9 for Dummies with CD's. Well when we got back to the room I installed and read the book. I think thats why I never really posted much in the beginning. The book did a good job of explaining stuff. Basic stuff anyways. Anyways here is my very first post here. http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=5745&hl= Not sure still if this is the first place I posted at or not. I think it is. I looked at Linuxquestions.org and nothing over there goes back any farther.
  2. I moved to Mandrake 10.1. I always kind of slammed Mandrake because I thought is was "ugly". Kind of hard ot explain. Just on a whim because of some of the reasons you gave papaschtroumpf I decided to install 10.1 and those far have given up on Ubuntu. Its a fine distro, but some things just didn't work and some of the packages are lacking or outdated.
  3. Ok I have it starting now, only problem is it will crash right away. :(
  4. I got all the latest stuff from sourceforge and have it all installed and compiled. When I run the command "gnomad2" in a terminal I get this error.... gnomad2: error while loading shared libraries: libnjb-1.3.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory And I know its installed because the compile went fine with no errors and after doing a "whereis libnjb" it is found here..... libnjb: /usr/local/lib/libnjb.la /usr/local/lib/libnjb.so /usr/local/lib/libnjb.a I'm thinkng that maybe I don't have something linked right or something in the correct path, but not sure on how to do that, even after reading the directions. Anyone with any ideas would be greatly appeciated.
  5. In a terminal type "dmesg" and look towards the end of the list and see what it says. Post it here.

    Mandrake Repositories?

You could try here to setup your repos. http://www.ianmacgregor.net/addmedia/ Not sure if you can get KDE 3.3 unless you use the "cooker" repos, which I really can't advise doing. The 4th cd can be found, but I don't believe that its available to non-club members. I could be wrong.
  7. Oh yea make sure you have the kernel source installed. In a terminal type "uname -r". Then go to MCC Software mangement and install the kernel source. Like for mine I have 2.6.8.1-12mdksmp for my kernel. I installed the kernel-source 2.6.8.1-12mdk for the driver to compile correctly.
  8. Did you just run make in the madwifi folder and go those errors? It looks like your card is supported http://madwifiwiki.thewebhost.de/wiki/MadWifi You have to run "make" then su to root and "make install" after that you have to run "modprobe ath_pci" then go to the mandrake control center and set it up. I have a atheros card which the madwifi driver is for. If you go to the Mandrake Control Center>Network Internet>New Connection you can pick out "atho_pci" and go through the setup. Just make sure you have the ssid name right and chances are its a "managed" connection. Like my ssid is "mshome" you should have a setup or name similar in your router for this.
  9. Well finally broke down and decided to give Mandrake a shot again. Fresh install of 10.1. So far I'm impressed. chrisz settle down!!!!
  10. cybr turning off the iptables help with the smb problem, thanks. I have another problem though. I get this error on boot.... /etc/selinux/targeted/booleens error and I'm not sure but when I try to run yum it errors out. Also in the services I cannot start ip6tables. Would you have any idea on what might be up? Thanks

  12. One of the things that throws me off is the different look of the fstab. On here I didn't make my /home onits own partition, but if I do it on the laptop I will wont too. Ihave no idea what those new entries are. Where is cybr when you need him.
  13. Well finally broke down and put FC 3 on the gaming machine. Things have changed now from what I see. I guess ialong with ONE big yum config you can have serveral in the /etc/yum/repos.d dir. Gonna take some learnig over again.
  14. For those of you interested in running the latest Firefox, XChat and other apps WITHOUT using Hoary repos here is a link for backports to Warty for them. http://ubuntu-bp.sourceforge.net/ The repo to add to your /etc/apt/sources.list is there for these apps.
  15. I discovered Fluxbox and with the help of LukeK, Ohms, LZ and iph's tut I was able to get somethings setup. Still simple, but still learning. Nominated Screenshot
  16. Tried to install FC3 twice last night and both times failed at CD 3. So I gave up. I think its either a bad burn or crappy cd's. (Durabrand). It took about 45 mins. to get that far. In 45 mins I had my Ubuntu system back to just about where I was when I started the FC 3 install. I'll stay with Ubuntu!!!!!!
  17. Well couldn't help myself. Taking a short break on the laptop with ubuntu to see how FC3 is. Redhat being my first distro I just have to see whats up and new with it. :D FX
  18. RadiOShack, Check this site out. http://support.intel.com/support/notebook/...6059-prd955.htm Also one of the first things you'll learn with Linux is that Google.com is your very best friend. Another thing I've learned about Linux is Laptops have to be the worth things to learn/first install on. Desktops usually are the best thing to learn Linux on, from my point of persepctive anyways. Why do I say that? Well with laptops there is alot of on-board hardware and sometimes of lesser grade. Also Laptops do alot more trickier things than desktops, like wireless, push button cd/dvd controls, touchpads and things like that. Wireless being on of the trickest with some of them seems the real kicker for some. My suggestion would be if a desktop is not available to use cat5 cable until you get your wireless working and not to get to fustrated. Anyways don't mean to preach, but just remember Google.com is your friend. Go to that site and follow some of the links there and see if they help. You could also probably type your laptop model combined with centrino and linux in google and see what comes up. FX

    TeamSpeak

I have TeamSpeak installed and ET: TrueCombat:Elite mod. If I try to run the two or better if I start TeamSpeak, Elite won't start. I think its a sound driver issue with both programs wanting to use sound. I've done some searching on Google for an answer and from what I see I pretty much have to jump through hoops of fire to get them working together. I just want to know why? I wouldn't have this problem in M$ and I really would rather not use M$, but until Linux can get this straight without being a guru I have no choice!! This is both a "help me" and complain/whine thread. Any help would be nice. FX
  22. Apt-get in Fedora and Apt-get in Ubuntu/Debian are as far as I am concerned nothing alike. Worlds of difference to me. I've used both too and much prefer Ubuntu over Fedora. FX
  23. Mine after a fresh reinstall of Ubuntu. I wasn't happy with running Hoary and it being under strong dev. FX
  24. Welcome you and your GF to the club. "Resistance is Futile!!!" (No Borg thingy :( ) Hope you continue to use it for a while. FX
  25. I don't care I'm still not giving up my Ubuntu!!!!!! FX
