    k3b help

Tried Ixthusdan's solution, must have screwed up something, as it doesn't work for me. k3b still shows burn and read from same device. There must be a way of overwriting that link at /dev/cdroms/cdrom0...

    k3b help

Hi Chris; I've been trying to follow static's way of making k3b copy disks, but don't know how to overwrite /dev/cdroms/cdrom0, which is the ide (reader). Hello Ixthusdan; Your 1) is somwhat cryptic, in that I'm not sure what emulate means - is it this? append="devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi acpi=off quiet" Your 2) and 3) is new to me, will have to try it and see. Thanks (where is that head-scratching smily?)

    k3b help

... see - /dev/cdrom is just a link (pointing to) /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/cd, so you need to remove that old link and make a new one pointing to /dev/scsi..yaddayadda I've been exploring this for two days, and haven't found a way to remove and install a new link. I don't understand kate, and ln won't cooperate. Hope this doesn't turn out to be too obvious, but could someone tell me how to do this in /dev/cdroms/cdrom0. What's there now is: cd '/dev/ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0' [william@localhost william]$ cd '/dev/ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0' [william@localhost lun0]$ A long way to go on the learning curve... :(
  4. I installed the three-disk version of mdk 9.1 today (I've been using the two-disk "standard version) and what a difference! No connect icon! Could connect through mcc, but browser couldn't find anything, acted like there was no connection. Suspect this is a permissions problem, but got fed up with fixing things, and reverted to the standard edition. It works. Good thing about the three-disk version is, no fooling around with nvidia 4496 drivers. install was trouble-free.
  5. Already filled in the append line, everything works now. I'm guessing that vga=788 would give the blue boot screen, instead of the black one. Haven't used grub since Lycoris, as several times it stopped loading, and the rescue disk was too mysterious for me. Still don't know what "kermel panic" means. This maybe not grub, but haven't had a problem with lilo. Yet. Thanks to all, every post good for learning.
  6. It worked! :D It booted with a black screen (runlevel 3?) and many inscrutable lines, then made some sleazy offers which I declined (wanna config?) CDrom 2 not longer will read, but that no problem for the moment. Is there a doc or readme that tells the meaning of what I copied into lilo.config? Couldn't find it in google. Thanks much - will be easier to play now. :D
  7. Lilo -v didn't object this time. I copied Steve's suggestion (without the parenthetical stuff). Now for the great leap into the unknown. Stay tuned.
  8. I admit it - I don't know enough. Trying to point LILO to boot my test mdk on hdb4, haven't found the right lines to put in /etc/lilo.conf. The test mandrake - named ml2 - is at hdb4, I use hda. Windose is on hdb1. Everything on hdb1 boots from lilo (mdk is default) when I unplug hda. Here's my /fstab /dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 /dev/hda6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=auto,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0 none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount dev=/dev/scd0,fs=auto,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=auto,--,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0 /dev/hdb4 /mnt/ml2 ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hdb1 /mnt/windows vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/hdb3 swap swap defaults 0 0 And here is lilo.conf boot=/dev/hda map=/boot/map default="linux" keytable=/boot/us.klt prompt nowarn timeout=100 message=/boot/message menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw image=/boot/vmlinuz label="linux" root=/dev/hda1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="devfs=mount hdd=ide-scsi acpi=off quiet" vga=788 read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz label="linux-nonfb" root=/dev/hda1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="devfs=mount hdd=ide-scsi acpi=off" read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz label="failsafe" root=/dev/hda1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="devfs=nomount hdd=ide-scsi acpi=off failsafe" read-only other=/dev/hdb1 label="dos" table=/dev/hdb map-drive=0x80 to=0x81 map-drive=0x81 to=0x80 #other=/dev/hdb4 # label=ml2 # table=/dev/hdb # loader=? other=/dev/fd0 label="floppy" unsafe image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.21-0.25mdk label=2421-25 root=/dev/hda1 read-only optional vga=788 append=" devfs=mount hdd=ide-scsi acpi=off quiet" initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.21-0.25mdk.img image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.21-0.13mdk label=2421-13 root=/dev/hda1 read-only optional vga=788 append=" devfs=mount hdd=ide-scsi acpi=off quiet" initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.21-0.13mdk.img I had the first three lines only for hdb4 when I ran lilo -v, and got this: "Fatal: First section of /dev/hdb4 doesn't have a valid boot signature." Can someone tell me what else I need do? :?:
  9. Thanks, banjo. I spent a long time llooking for it & gave up. Much better now :D

  11. Hi NSL1212; Yes, I have the latest f-prot. But I can't use developement in software manager, as I have the standard edition of Mdk9.1. Think maybe just better to try another anti-virus prog. :(

  14. Easy way to install opera: 1- Use home icon on taskbar to go to the directory where it was downloaded 2- Right-click that file 3- click Software installer I made an icon on the desktop, so that with one click it will both connect (I have dial-up) and start Opera. I am using Opera 7.20 B1 Its nice if you like the M2 mail.
  15. I did the above, and got: [root@localhost f-prot]# ./check-updates.sh The check-updates.sh script has been replaced by a perl script: check-updates.pl. The check-updates.sh script has been deprecated Please make appropriate changes to your crontab entries. Error: Unable to include perl module: 'HTTP::Request'. Please install this module and try re-running this script. (Hint: man CPAN) Fatal error. Exiting... [root@localhost f-prot]# exit Maybe I should not have installed CPAN? Tech support at f-prot thought it necessary, but always showed errors. Would un-install it if I knew how.
  16. I've installed f-prot, and can use it, but never been able to update virus definitions. Would appreciate a howto, if you remember.
  17. It works! :D Thanks
  18. OK I've installed drakwizard and could now set time of my server. Another step on the learning curve. :?: I'm betting the server in question is not my ISP. We need an icon for scratching the head
  19. And the file file:/usr/share/doc/HOWTO/HTML/en/TimePrecision/ntp.html does not exist on my machine. I've found interesting prog.s, like gettimeofday.2.bz2 and settimeofday.2.bz2 but am reluctant to try them, already broke too many things trying to use rdate.
  20. In documentation there is a picture of "server configuration" on the list in mcc just below "software". There is no such thing on my mcc, so no time wizard accessable. Maybe because I have the standard (two disk) edition of 9.1? Or because I've never configured a server and don't know what its all about.
