  1. Konqueror recovery

    Hi linux fans!

    I don't know if some body has noticed that sometimes konqueror goes corrupted, and I solve this problem by deleting /tmp or ~/.kde contents. I am sure that, this is not the correct solution, but I have not any idea to run konqueror. Thanks a lot.

  2. Mandriva and the others ...

    Hi everybody there!

     

    I have been using linux for more than 8 years, before that period I used os/2 and microsoft windows as well. I stll believe that linux is the best choice for free people, who believe in the FOSS (Free and Open Source Software). Let speak frankly about the good product and payment. If I want to obtain a good stuff software (Linux OS) I have to pay. Of course less than microsoft product license policy. But in general, all of us (my colleagues, office workers, my friends and of course me) here in Budapest have decided, that the realtivly best two linux distros are: Mandriva Linux and SuSE linux(Open SuSE).

    Unfortunatly, in the last one year, Mandriva(Mandrake) have not made any serious innovation or even obvious developements in it is packages. The difference between the n and n+1 versions is shown up in the KDE, GNOME, Kernel and some apps. If this is the case why did not they include them in their Source Updates?

    I wish Mandriva will not disappoint their fans all over the world. Just think of this, Microsoft is going to ship their pride, Vista. Don't forget that the majority of desktop OS users are still using Microsoft products. If we definitely like to allure them to Linux world, we should make more and more radically improvements, innovations, less buggy product and brill look-and-fell desktop environment. At my job I often struggle (as system admin) with the system users to convince them using Linux. I always get the same question: Which Linux distro is the best for us?Among the large scale of Linux distros I have given a try are: PCLinux OS, Arch Linux, Ark Linux, Ubuntu, Open SuSE, Fedora. Believe it or not, the ONLY Linux distro that meet our needs and testified to be our favourite distro is Mandriva Linux.We are completely tired of everlasting probing Linux distros to get the best. We here at my job are agree in that, why should we often seek for the excellent Linux distro, whereas Mandriva Linux renders a great help for us.Mandriva Linux is the uniqe product we always return back to. This does not mean that I degrade the other Linux distros (above mentioned ones). The desktop OS folks use Microsoft because they like it, we here in Hungary like Mandriva Linux because it is very simple and useful, it does a lot of things we desire to see on our computers, though it is not flawless. Thanks guys.

  6. Novell beefs up the Linux GUI

    Can we see such development (XGL) in Mandriva Linux. As a Linux fan and committed user I doubt that the present and actual Linux GUI can be powerful and attractive than Vistas Aero desktop. I wish that Mandriva will include XGL in its next release Mandriva Linux 2007. Hopefully Mandy 2007 will make a different development and more serious stuff than increasing KDE, GNOME, Kernel and others ver. numbers. Just do the best.

    How can I install kdebase 3.5 (cooker) over an official installed mandy 2006 power pack. I installed the official mandrivalinux 2006 powerpack, after that i tried to test cooker including kdebase 3.5 and other packs, everything went fairly except kdebase-3.5. I often get the error message: COULD NOT START KSTARTUPCONFIG at kde login. Thank You in advance.

  11. Simply Mandriva 2006 ...

    Mandriva Linux 2006 is the best package Mandriva has ever made. This excellent stuff excels in two major aspects. The first is the convenience (look-and-feel, use-of-use, simplicity) with Lycoris assets, the second one is the hardware support. No doubt that there is not, and will never be a perfect software, thus Mandriva Linux would not be exception. But I still feel that -as Mandriva 2006 and cooker user as well-, there is something freaky in this package causing kded error and cpu high(over) load. Another weird thing is Adobe package. When I execute the command acroread (acroread7) I realize that acrobat reader heads back to the prompt. Once again there is another error. I uninstalled Adobe 7, and reinstall it without any error. But when I gave the same command acroraed I get the same resault. Since I have already met this problem in cooker I decided to download AdobeReader_enu-7.0.1-1.i386.rpm from SuSE FTP server. Believe it or not the problem has been suddenly solved. Don't ask me how this could happen. I wonder why Mandriva released this version before bugfixing it. Is not it realistic? Hopefully Mandriva will recognize sooner that, selling a product needs more efforts to create a relatively bug-free, thus stable and reliable stuff. Maybe the unique solution is to EXTEND the development period, say 12 or 18 months. Nevertheless Mandriva Linux would be a great linux stuff for all of us as linux fans as long as Mandriva it self is convinced of making hard work to improve and push Mandriva Linux forward.

  12. Mandriva 2006 stumbles

    I have experienced the same things in 2006,especially kded and cpu overload. Really Mandriva had made a good stuff (mandy 2006) for us, but I wonder why did not they make high efforts according stability and reliability. These two factors reinforce that linux deserves to be given a chance in both support and use. Do not forget, we do not like to see another mswindows-like linux. At the same time I would like to express my gratitudes to Mandriva for the solid efforts. Thanks a lot.

    "The best and easiest OS installation EVER!"

     

    This guy has seen his share of Linux distros, and has always found MSWin to be easier. Until a few days ago.

    With CentOS he had to fiddle to get his tvcard to work - which I think he didn't manage; it worked out of the box. With some info from my website on lirc he managed to get his remote to work - now he has some config left to do, but all in all I've rarely seen someone so ecstatic about a new Linux...

     

    I'm seeing some high loads, but not logrotate or kat - in my case it's 'kded', no clue what process that is.

    The cpu load can go up to 100% and stay there - for hours!

    I left my wifes machine like that, and checked back later - still 100% loaded. I've actually deinstalled kat on that machine, it was slowing it down too much...

     

    And I'm seeing a lot of 'wrong signatures' for packages, even lots of packages on the dvd. This is not good, teaching people to ignore that - whereas those sigs should be the thing preventing trojans from entering the system..!

     

    I've not seen any of the Xorg issues - for me all my 3 systems are fine except for the points mentioned above.

  13. The Great Mandriva

    Hi Mandy fans!

    A long time ago I have decided to write my experiences with Mandriva linux in general. At first Mandriva Linux seemed to be the best choice for all of us (Linux fans). Unfortunately I became frustrated due to a lot of things. For example: some apps which ran well in the previous versions of mandy did not work in the new version due to missing libs. No matter, because I downloaded the missing libs from fedora and suse and they worked well as I suggested.

    The other thing I desliked in Mandriva linux WAS the minor development. The main difference between versions were presented in KDE, GNOME and Kernel version. So I did not feel that Mandriva is aiming to produce an innovative linux stuff, something completely different from those in the market. Something more user-friendly linux product was kindy needed from those who like Madriva and buy it.

    I always believed in Mandriva and surely knew that (without any doubt)it is matter of time and money to make a good stuff.

    The time has arrived. Since Mandrake began acquiring Conectiva and buying some Lycoris assets, my colleagues and I (here in Budapest) have been feeling a good amazing. Hence mandriva Linux deserves more respect and more compliment for the huge work.

    I watch COOKER very well. I installed Mandy 10.2(which we bought), after then I forgote the Updates. Instead, I used Cooker. Updating my cooker-10.2 version as fast as possible. Here my family completely satisfied of this cooker version. This means one thing: Mandriva feels the big responsibility and bear it. They give the folks all over the world a heavy-push toward FOSS (Free and Open Source Software). Don't talk about which linux distro is the best. Just let the linux home-computer users tasting the cake.

    In the past, we installed SuSE linux on some computers at job. It was not difficult to realise that, suse was not the good choice. Then we decided to try Mandriva linux. We like it because it is very simple and reasonable. It is the most general-purpose Linux distro I have ever seen before. Really, it is very pleasant to install and use it with a lot of linux-apps and using windows-related apps with codeweavers crossover office. It is very hard to make a place in the market, especially when this company is almost 7 years old. No matter how many obstacles on the track, we should achieve goals. Just go ahead and show your hard commitment to create a Linux PRODUCT for the folk.

    Many thanks to all of the mandriva developers and management, who hardly work day by night to provide us with such a New-Generation of Linux product, with a clean and apparent concept of „How To Atract Linux Fans Attention” to Linux world. A lot of thanks.

  15. kopete and proxy settings

    Hi guys

     

    I enabled messenger in kopete and would like to chat with my friends. My computer is connected to internet through a proxy server. Unfortunately the connect has not gone established. I tried to find out what is the wrong. Of course there is not proxy settings in kopete(server ip address:port number). At least this is my first guess. Please help. Thanks a lot.

  17. mandy 10.2 and firewall

    Hi guys!

    How can I solve this problem?

    I try to ftp with mandy 10.2 machine, when the Firewall is enabled and just enabled ftp server.This was not successful. I only could ftp with the above mentioned mandy machine when I enabled the NO FIREWALL option. So I would like to use access the mandy machine using ftp and leaving Firewall enabled. Thanks a lot.

  20. mandrivalinux 10.2 and antivirus package

    Does Mandriva linux 10.2 contain Antivirus or even alike apps in its package as SuSE does. Hopefully Mandriva Linux will carefully consider this important question. Do not make such an imperfect work, since linux is relatively less exposed to virus-attack as well. Thanks a lot.

  21. mandriva linux 10.2 is very slowwww...

    I have tow hard disks. WinXP is installed on the sata, Mandrivalinux 10.2 on pata hard disk. The file system is ext3. The parallel ata hard disk is IBM, the sata one is maxtor. Again I think the system is trying to identify some hardware devices (sata hard disk, usb devices, Firewire 1394 devices, parallel devices, etc.). In fine I installed SuSE linux 9.3 on the same computer and I found not such slow-syndrome.m Of course I deleted SuSE and installed Mandrivalinux 10.2 which works fine except this bug. Thanks a lot.

    The is the second time I realised this syndrome in mandrivalinux 10.1 and 10.2. When I inserted the dvd disk and began installing mdk it went very slowly after any step. In brief the installation was very desperate I have ever seen such thing yet. After the slow-install I gave the command mcc (Mandrake Control Center), it took about 5 minutes to be set up as well. I tried to enable and disable API, ACPI but no resault. I hope somebody there will give me an advice to solve this problem. All of us like to stay with mandriva linux forever, but Mandriva should make a good stuff thar runs on any pc. Thanks a lot.

  24. Mandrivalinux 10.2 LE

    I would like to begin my this short article with a simple question. How many times have you been changing or returned to your favourite linux distro. For me the favourite linux distros are Mandrake and SuSE. Of course this means nothing. I don't like to talk about SuSE linux here because I wrote my opinion in the suse forum. No doubt that Mandriva Linux is a good linux stuff, but let us frankly talk about some very important things. mandrivalinux 10.2 did not provide us a version downward compatibility. As I have already mentioned last year that, the developers have not enough time to test their upcoming versions, thus the resault is very apparent. The sum of the errors and bugs make the linux folks disgausted and hopeless, the next step is to change their linux distro and the game starts again. I will not abandon the hope wishing that Conectiva will force Mandrake to get the right way and stop releasing x, x+1, x+2 with no CONCEPT. I repeat it again Mandrivalinux is very good distro, but this is not so enough to allure the folks the whole world to use it.Not only the home users, administrators but even the local govts. In fine we all hope more success for this distro.
