  1. You have an NVidia 6800? AFAIK the Open Source Nvidia drive (nv) doesn't support that card yet. Try downloading Nvidia's own driver and install it. But since you probably need GUI for that, try selecting something simpler, like vesa, during XFdrake.
  2. A src.rpm is a source rpm, you need to compile it first. Usually by the command rpmbuild --rebuild <blah>.src.rpm Of course you probably need a ton of software installed (usually development packages) before you can compile it.
  3. Are you trying to just play midi files or actually do some midi sequencing. If just playing midi files, I think SB Live! or Audigy is the best for it, in terms of quality that is. There is a howto about enabling midi for SB Live! in this board (in tips and tricks section I think). Of course, if you happen to find old Waveblaster compatible soundcards, such as SB 16 old version and a Waveblaster card such as Yamaha DBXG50, it's a lot easier. I used to have a Aureal card that have the waveblaster header and DBXG50. After paying 30 dollars for the driver, I can play all my midi. Too bad those cards can only be found on ebay now.
  4. I believe Mepis to be more user friendly than Knoppix in terms of desktop. Don't get me wrong, Knoppix is a very nice distro, but I use it more as a swiss-army-knife instead of desktop demo :)
  5. Transparencies are cool. As long as it is optional and doesn't require any resources when disabled (other than a few hd space). Anyway, I think transparencies is nice if you can actually make the whole monitor transparent.. so you can see what's behind the monitor :)
  6. Depending on the cellphone really. For nokia, you need to get something like gnokii ( http://www.gnokii.org/ ) Sony Ericsson is easier, all you need is ircp, which I think is available in contrib. I think the best solution is to check for your cellphone in http://www.tuxmobil.org and see what kind of software it needs to communicate.
  7. Right after just skimming the first page I notice two problems with this review. 1. They use older versions of Suse and Mandrake. 2. They use "limited editions" of Suse and Mandrake (Personal/Discovery Edition). A little research will show that those two editions are practically useless in showing the power of linux. Use powerpack / professional edition instead. Because of this, I don't bother continuing after the first page
  8. You are probably running harddrake while booting up, so that it overwrites your nice configuration. Try disabling harddrake service using the Mandrake Control Center -> System -> Services. Then check whether that problem starts again.
  9. Note that I don't have a soundblaster live, but I have a NForce Soundstorm that supposedly have 5.1 channel output too. In kmix, there is a box named Advanced. Put a checkmark on it and there will be many additional buttons. Put a checkmark on the button that enables the other speakers outputs like rear or center speakers.
  10. IF you haven't changed anything and still cannot read regular cd, maybe it's because the lens is dirty?
  11. How much space do you have for your /home partition? I mean, the ability to download e-mail is limited by your /home partition space usually.
  12. It seems that the difference is that one is just a newer version of the sb live with 7.1 sound support, thus requiring more cpu power. IMO, I would pick the older version because it is known to work with linux (the EMU10k1 chip is a giveaway) while who knows what chipset is used for the 7.1 version.
  13. I think it is the way the cd is burned that is the problem. What is the software used to burn the CD in the first place?
  14. What about your built-in soundcard? (if it is built into the motherboard that is). I cannot get inside to your link. Can you tell me what are the names of those cards so I can compare it?
  15. Well.. according to the permission listing, (rwxr-wr-w), anyone can read and write into the drive. So there should be no problem.
  16. Sometimes, getting no sound means mixer problems. That is, you need to turn the volumes up in the mixer and unmute the sound. I have NForce2 based motherboard and I use the typical ALSA snd-intel driver in Mandrake 10.1.
  17. Since it is 127 degrees celcius (which is about half of 256) I think it is a bogus temperature reading. I think lm_sensors arbitrarily put an "FF" value into that third sensor since it cannot detect anything connected into that sensor. FF in hex is +127 in signed decimal value, I think.
  18. It all depends on which laptop you have. The toshiba laptop I have is working fine with regular synaptics driver, but with the toshiba-specific synaptics driver made by someone else, I can actually use the middle button.
  19. There is a bit of a problem with Mandrake signing its rpm with the wrong key. Anyway, if you download it from an official Mandrake mirror, then you can ignore the error message and continue the installation. I did and there is no problem so far.
  20. So I guess there should be a new link in the front of the MUSB to reflect this fact. I mean, easyurpmi is such an important webpage for any Mandrake users.
  21. Draksync. It's the best way to sync directories and files (including email and documents) period. I use it in my office as a primary backup tool. All the people need is just to press the button, enter their password, and everything will be synced into the server. All I need to do is just backup the /home partition and I'm done :) Stardict. Find the translation of any highlighted word. It even have English - Indonesian dictionary.. I use this one a lot :)
  22. Hmm.. from that site, it seems that there is a DSDT problem with toshiba tecra. The site only covers kernel 2.6.0 and 2.6.1 while Mandrake uses 2.6.8. I'm surprised that DSDT problem is not solved in newer kernel already. Anyway, I don't know much about DSDT, so try searching this board for that.
  23. That's weird, I can change the right and left click fine using KDE Control Center. Of course, right after I did that, the scroller doesn't work, so I need to restart X by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Backspace
  24. It seems that you are using the wrong driver for that modem Try going to this link, since it has information on that modem. http://rzr.online.fr/docs/comp/modem.htm It is a bit outdated, but from what I see, the best one is the smartlink modem. Get the smartlink modem driver from http://www.smlink.com (the one I have is named slmodem-2.9.10.tar.gz). Then do these steps. 1. Now, you need to do all these as root. 2. Install kernel-source according to the kernel version you have by typing urpmi kernel-source<version name> 3. Untar the driver, tar -xvfz slmodem-2.9.10.tar.gz 4. Go into the directory and type these two commands to install the driver make make install 5. Edit your /etc/modprobe.preload file and add this line slamr 6. Edit your /etc/rc.local file and add these lines slmodemd --country=INDONESIA /dev/slamr0 & rm /dev/modem ln -s /dev/ttySL0 /dev/modem (The country line is the name of your country of course). 7. Configure kppp and point the modem into /dev/modem. You should know the rest of the steps. Anyway, good luck. :)
  25. Ouchie.. sorry about that. I usually have those options on every computer I install Mandrake in. Because if it is not, then it will hang. Anyway, I cannot help you any more in this regards. Sorry about that. Usually toshibas are pretty easy to get working but I guess Tecras are too different from Satellites.
