    Updated rpms

you can find them in the repositories under updates but why go through all that trouble?
  2. Don't know if this is included already or not but ntfs-3g by default for removable and non-removable drives
  3. desktop-bds, which uses free-bsd repos (like pc-bsd). I sort off borked my install, it doesnt display fonts anymore and since I installed in vm-ware I cant even seem to ctrl alt f1 into a terminal...
  4. Thanks for the links. I am pretty sure though that I saw libalsa in the repos.
  5. You need to give some more info about your system (proc/mobo/videocard and the rest), sounds like a grapics driver issue though if you are coming as far as a login prompt (not that you should even see them ....)
  6. John, I don' t want to start some political discussion but suppose somehow becomes the most popular os and this other company which does support linux becomes a virtual monopoly, would you also boycot it? A: Over here I, and everyone in this country, legally have the have a health insurance, 20+ companies over here offer a health plan, these plans sell from $1000 onwards B: Suppose MS has the only OS on the market and it sells this for $2000+ which would be the worst deal? For me this is quite simple, deal A because I am forced to make a deal even if I can choice between deals, in situation B I can negate the deal completely....
  7. there was a thread here not only a few weeks ago from someone who successfully in essence switched harddisks from one setup to another, completely different setup without any major glitches, success is not guaranteed though.... btw, why are you getting amd/nvidia-mobo intel/intel-mobo blows amd/nvidia completely out of the water these days
  8. Gparted is a partition tool, mandriva has it own (and supposedly very good partition tool) in the mandriva control center (typing mcc in a console is one possible way to launch it) but if you really want to use gparted why don' t you download it from the repositories? See http://wiki.mandrivausers.org/index.php/Software_management for differnet ways of installing software in Mandriva
  9. Does anyone have experience with BSD? How does it compare with Mandriva or Ubuntu in desktop performance? Is Alsa available (so Flash 9 will work)? I tried installing the latest rc (rc2) of desktop-bsd in vmware (dont know how this would be in a regular install though) but it seems rather slow, especially the package-manager, but couldnt get flash to work. Supposedly BSD is very fast but all tests refer to server usage, not desktop usage. I chose desktop-bsd because it has xorg 7.2 so I would be able to install beryl (on a regular install), whilst pc-bsd still only has 6.9
  10. No worries we have all been there (or are still there like me :) ) anyway you will find Mandriva already pretty much fine-tuned for desktop use, this article has a few tweaks: http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/8308
  11. files and folders starting with a . are hidden, there is probeble an option in nautilus (the gnome file-browser) somewhere to show them but I don't know where....
  12. they are in your home directory. I also had the same problem once and tried to create a new user with the same name but didnt have much luck
  13. No it most likely wouldnt work as they would have diffenent uids but you could try to install another desktop like kde or xfce and see it that works.... oh btw maybe you could try to rename or delete .Xauthority from your user account or .serverauth.xxxx
  14. Neither are MDE ;) Mandriva Club Nederland also does some requests for rpm's: http://www.mandrivaclub.nl/site/index.php?act=request
  15. but why not just use the prebuild mandriva packages from the repositories? It has 1.6.2 and I can't imagine a big difference between 1.6.2 and .3....
  16. The most likely cause is that your video driver did not update properly, it is quite easy to fix if you updated before you had to supply a password, it is your root password. Dont worry about the localhost stuff, its just the default name Mandriva gives to your computer.
  17. you are not root, did you give the correct root password after you typed su?
  18. probably you are not root as root: [root@localhost ~]# XFdrake as user: [ffi@localhost ~]$ XFdrake bash: XFdrake: command not found notice the # for root and $ for users...
  19. su means superuser or root, or in windows terminology administrator, it is the password you entered when you installed mandriva.
  20. Hi welcome to MUB when you get to the log in screen hit ctrl+alt+f1 type su then you password type XFdrake (like this, it's case sensitive!) select your video card, but choose not to use the properietary driver, and choose to automatically start x server type drak3d and select not to use 3d desktop then restart, you won't get any fancy effects but at least you will have a working desktop again from their we can work on getting the rest to work
  21. I would install the second one (kernel-source-stripped), it saves about 200MB compared to kernel-source and if it doesnt work you can always still try it later.

    Mounting Devices

uname -r or uname -a for the works (oops I didnt read you OP correctly, I thought you were having probs with fat32 too, to mount ntfs read/writable you will also need to install ntfs-config and run it and select automount removable devices)

dont forget to also install the matching kernel-source(-stripped) for the kernel you installing.....
