  1. OK, as I said I'm a total n00b when it comes to network drives... A little more help would be appreciated... I bought the WD's My Book World Edition (1TB) and have plugged it in. I've plugged it in my ADSL router (which in turn is connected to my Wireless AP) and powered it up. This NAS is a single drive version (the MyBook World Edition II has two drives). From windows side I managed to set it up eventually, but had some problems with the network once that was done. I couldn't connect to Internet after that (from WinXP home). So I booted to Mandriva 2008.0 (Free). I saw from WinXP that the drive was issued an IP number within my network and then I browsed to that IP with Firefox (192.168.254.6 I believe was the automatically given IP - I changed it to something higher; I believe it was .30 so that it wouldn't mess with my systems PCs and routers). I couldn't see this drive (IP number) from Linux when I first plugged it in, so I booted to WinXP then. So now I booted back to Mandriva again. B) WD has made a WD Anyware Access -programme that works with both Windoze and Mac, but not with Linux. It's called MioNet. But the admin tool can be accessed with any common browser, so I configured it a bit. I managed to change the IP address and found a way to make some groups and users, but that's as far as I got yesterday. This is what I'd like to do with it: I would like to have this drive act as my network back-up for all my most important files. This, I guess, I can manage with drakbackup by simply stating where to create the backups (in the new network drive IP addrs and folder). But then I would like this drive to act as an FTP server. Would that be possible? So that the system would be accessible by those I grant access to and into those folders I grant them access to. So simply put: 1 TB would be diveded into two parts: one part for my backups (let's say 500 - 600 GBs) and another part for FTP uses (the rest 400 - 500 GBs). Would that be possible, and if so, how? Then referring to the links Yves posted; would this be the way to go? Would I then install this Openfiler or FreeNAS directly into the NAS drive?
  2. No, it isn't there. It shows only USB id's 041e:4051 and 041e:4053 (but not 4052).
  3. I have exactly the same webcam (Creative Live! Vista IM, USB id: 041e:4052) and have managed to make it work partially with the rastageegs.org driver: http://www.rastageeks.org/ov51x-jpeg/index...IM_Live_Support I got it to work with mplayer with this command Mplayer: mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l:width=640:height=480:device=/dev/video0 But no luck with skype. Skype recognizes this cam (it can be selected from the pull-down list), but shows only a black test image.
  4. Ian: Thanks, understood (I'm very new to the networking stuff)! :) Yves: Merci bien for the links. Especially the FreeNAS looks interesting. I'll read the wiki through.
  5. OK, thanks Ian. This WD drive is around 250 EUR from a local shop. I may go for that then. Then if I want to store and access the drive from both WinXP and Mandriva, should I format it to NTFS? Or would that cause problems with my Mandriva back-ups? And further into the subject: What would be the best Mandriva programme to assure my most important files and settings are backed-up regularly? I've used the one accessible from MCC (drakbackup) - is that the one to use?
  6. I'm looking for a network storage drive that I could use to back up my most important files (such as family photos and e-mails) from my Mandriva. I would like this drive to be accessible from my other Mandriva PCs and hopefully even from my Win XP systems. And I would also like to use this drive as an FTP server to share large video files (for both upload and download) with outside users. I've got my eye set on this one (in a local store off-the-shelf): WD My book world edition (1 TB capacity). How would this work - any thoughts? :)
  7. FWIW I always leave resizing win-partitions to win programmes.
  8. Just to let you know, I have compizfusion and it's 3D eyecandy enabled and am able to play videos. I know there are quite a few things not working in compizfusion, but it's not totally beyond hope. ;)
  9. No problem! Hope we were able to help. Pls post back to let us know how it went. And, btw, welcome to the board! :)
  10. This is how I would go about doing that. I take it that the windows is controlling all of that 320 GB slave HDD (as a letter D:\ or something like that). If so, resize the D:\ -drive (or whatever the slave drive is named under XP), so that you have enough free space for your Mandriva installation. Depending on what you wish to do with it, I'd free some 50 - 60 GB from Mandriva. Then you would still have 260 - 270 GB partition left for your personal files (pics, vids etc.). The D:\ -drive is most likely formatted as NTFS files system, but that is no problem nowadays as you can still use it with Linux (ntfs-3g will let you access and write to ntfs drives). So you can use that drive even from Linux system. Once there is adequate amount of free space on your drive, you can start your Mandriva installation. Once asked, where to install, go for the option "Use free space left" ... or something along those lines. I cannot remember what it says exactly, but it should be self-explinatory. For the installation part, here's one excellent walkthrough with nice screenshots from aRTee: http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/installmdv2008.0.html
  11. Nope, I didn't receive anything yet. Sorry, I forgot to post back in that thread, but I managed to make a copy of that damaged disk on anothe DVD drive. I posted an update to the original thread as well.
  12. Update part II: Even though they promised to send me one (I replied them with my home address), I still haven't received any new copy of the PP2008 DVD. What I finally managed to do was create a copy of this DVD in another PC. That DVD drive wasn't that picky with the quality of the disk and didn't mind the scratches on the disk.
  13. Well, here's mine for March (2008 :P )
  14. Update: I complained about the DVD and had a brief e-mail conversation with the good people from the mag and they promised to send me a new copy by snail mail.
  15. Nope, cannot copy. It cannot read the files... "Could not read file xxxxx.rpm". It must be a corrupt DVD. I've tried to unmount/mount the DVD several times, but no. It seems to have some scratches but more importantly the markings from the glue used in the envelope it was enclosed in are far worse than the small scratches. I must complain about it and try to get a new DVD from Linux Magazine...
  16. OK, that didn't work... Does this mean this DVD is just corrupted/broken? [root@localhost restricted]# rpm -iv --test lindvd-1.2.6-8mdv2008.0.i586.rpm lindvd-1.2.6-8mdv2008.0.i586.rpm: not an rpm package (or package manifest): Input/output error [root@localhost restricted]# urpmi lindvd-1.2.6-8mdv2008.0.i586.rpm unable to register rpm file error registering local packages [root@localhost restricted]
  17. Yes I can, Greg. Hmm.. I may therefore be able to install the .rpm packages directly without MCC or konsole... But would that take care of the dependencies?
  18. And this is what I get when trying to add it through konsole. [root@localhost dude67]# urpmi.addmedia DVD_PP removable://media/cdrom/i586/media/restricted adding medium "DVD_PP" /bin/cp: reading `/media/cdrom/i586/media/restricted/media_info/synthesis.hdlist.cz': Input/output error unable to access hdlist file of "DVD_PP", medium ignored unable to update medium "DVD_PP" removing medium "DVD_PP" [root@localhost dude67]#
  19. OK, I'm feeling a little bit frustrated, but how do you add that media? When I try that through MCC (adding this media through the GUI and finding my way down the DVD path), all I get is this error message: Unable to add medium, errors reported: It's impossible to retrieve the list of new packages from the media `DVD PP 2008'. Either this update media is misconfigured, and in this case you should use the Software Media Manager to remove it and re-add it in order to reconfigure it, either it is currently unreachable and you should retry later. I'm trying to add this medium as a "Removable device" and the path is /media/cdrom/i586/media. I've also tried this path: /media/cdrom/i586/media/restricted and /media/cdrom/i586/media/restricted/media_info. The last path is where the synthesis.hdlist.cz resides... Do I need to upgrade (by booting with the DVD) it to Powerpack?
  20. Thanks Jim, I'll try that. I think I'm going home via a supermarket...
  21. I'm thinking of buying this issue for the LinDVD (I've no idea if that's alone worth it...) and the Cedega (with one months' worth of updates). I'm running Mandriva Free 2008 currently, so what would be the best and easiest way of upgrading Free to Powerpack? Do I need to make a fresh installation of the Powerpack or can I somehow upgrade Free 2008? What I really want from that Powerpack would be that Cedega and perhaps the LinDVD.
  22. Linux Magazine out now with Mandriva Powerpack 2008 on DVD. The issue is March 2008. More here: http://www.linux-magazine.com/ Does anyone know if this is "the real thing" as the price for this mag is far less than what the Powerpack sells through Mandriva? What's the catch?
  23. Thanks Greg, I'll try it tonight. My almost 5 year old son thanks you in advance! (But I'm not going to tell him that his daddy couldn't solve this by himself... :P )
