  1. I too, had a lot of these problems. But I found out that removing Kat, this is the desktop-search engine, solved my porblems. You can remove Kat with a little help from MCC, and just enter kat. And then remove it.
  2. Thanks, for your input. I'll keep that in my mind next time. But the problem is, that the PowerPack, already installed the nVidia-driver, so I didn't have to build the graphics module. But I would prefer it, though. For now, I fixed the problem. Next time I will build the module myself. As I always do. Thanks again.
  3. Couldn't try that option anymore, as I removed that in order to install the latest nVidia-driver. Thanks anyway for your input. I'll keep that in mind next time, when I have a similar problem.
  4. You could try to install KeyTouch which is available through easy urpmi. KeyTouch is a program which allows you to easily configure the extra function keys of your keyboard. This means that you can define, for every individual function key, what to do if it is pressed. When you buy a new keyboard a CD-ROM will probably included. This CD-ROM contains software to configure the extra function keys (the image above shows an example of extra functionkeys) of your keyboard with. The problem however is that most of the times the software is not available for Linux. KeyTouch is the solution to this problem. It allows you to easily configure the extra function keys of your keyboard.
  5. Oke, this is little bit weird. After installation of Mandriva 2006 Free-edition on one of my pc's, the mousewheel only moves from left to right. That is along ths X-axis, instead of moving along the Y-axis. For example Firefox, Konqueror and more. In my xorg.conf I found the following line: "ZAxisMapping" "6 7" Now I don't know if that is the line I should change, on another pc which also has Mandriva 2006 Free-edition, the mouse works as it should and with exactly the same line in the xorg.conf. I hope one of you gurus can help me out. :D
  6. Oke, I found some of the same issues related to my problem on the Official-board of Mandriva.com. I removed everything related to dkms and nvidia and downloaded the most recent driver from there site, which is 1.0.8174. And I installed that driver. Everything seems to work oke now. But a question remains. Is dkms really that buggy? At least that was the impression I've got after reading several posts on the Official-board of Mandriva.com.
  7. Tried that as you suggested, but it still returns with the same error.
  8. Hi, I'm using the Mandriva 2006 PowerPack edition. Which has the 1.0.7676 nVidia-drivers installed. This morning I updated my pc with urpmi --auto-select. Along with the update, came the new dkms-nvidia driver with version number 1.0.8174. After a reboot I can't seem to get my X started. When trying to start X as root, I'm getting the following error: Error: API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module is version 1.0.8174, but this X module is version 1.0.7676. Please be sure that your kernel module and all NVIDIA driver files have the same version. I understand what the error means, I just can't seem to find a solution. I've tried looking for some entry in my xorg.conf, but I can't seem to find anything that resembles the driver-versions. Must be something dumb I'm overlooking. :woops: Hope someone can help me out. Thanks, in advance.
  9. This can't be serious.... And who did the survey?
  10. They also have a CD-version of the 4.0.2-version. ;)
  11. Don't now if you're making use of the Firewire-controller. But if not, you can probable disable your Firewire-controller in your Bios. Only if it's an onboard-controller, that is.
  12. True. I once tried to replace a board in an Hewlett Packard. But the boards HP used for their pc's were micro-ATX. The standard was then, ATX. The micro-ATX-boards, (btw. I'm not sure they're called microATX in the States) are a little harder to come by. And also a lot more expensive. But a Ian said, also check your current computer components, whether they're compatible with the board your gonna buy.
  13. Nice! I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.
  14. Can't you correct this problem with the OSD of your monitor?
  15. Don't know about the prices in the USA, but here in Europe you can have good inexpensive boards for about 50 Euros. Been building computers for about ten years now, and if I wre you, I should try to avoid ASrock and ECS. Sorry, but I've had to many bad boards with those. And it's a pain to get one returned for warranty. My personal favorites, in that price-range are MSI and Asus. But hey, what's an opinion.
  16. Don't know for sure, but I think that the bootloader from Dell is corrupted. Don't if they have one, never had a Dell before. But once had a Hewlett Packard Pentium 4 which had one. They use it in combination with a second partition on your hard drive, in case your system crashes. In that case you can restore you old configuration with that second partition which you can access from the bootloader. But again, don't know for sure. I bought my HP like that, don't know if Dell uses that configuration also. Perhaps someone with a Dell copmuter can help you out on that issue.
  17. Sounds like its hardware related. Change anything, hardware-like that is?
  18. Super, thanks. Works great here. :P
  19. Thanks jboy. Thats all I needed to know.
  20. Thanks for the advice scarecrow. I'll keep that in mind next time I'm upgrading my kernel. I thought that after a few weeks succesfully using a newer kernel, you could just as easily remove the older kernel.
  21. I'm running cooker 2006.1 currently. Ans I've upgaded my kernel to 2.6.12-13mdk. I've used it, I still have the old kernel on my hd as backup. But after running a few weeks with the new kernel I'm satisfied and would like to remove the old kernel and it's entries in Lilo. Could anyone explain, how I should do this? Thanks in advance....
  22. I've done something quite similar. I've plugged in my external harddrive and opened MCC. From there I removed the NTFS-partition and formatted it as ext3. So I could access it from my Linux pc's. I've also got an external harddrive of 80GB, on which I've created 3 partitions of FAT32. This way I don't exceed the maximum of 32GB for FAT32. You can create a larger partition of FAT32 with MCC, but then you would get stability issues. The disadvantage of FAT32 I found, was that it can't handle files larger then 4GB. For example, iso-files of a DVD.
  23. If you're considering which kernel-source to use with your present kernel 2.6.11-6mdk, you should use: Name: kernel-source-2.6 Version: 2.6.11-6mdk Size: 193719 KB Summary: The source code for the Linux kernel.
