  1. Yep it worked. I created a script /etc/rc.d/init.d/fluxfix and then a symlink to it in /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S24fluxfix Now it works fine. Thanks all James
  2. It turns out that gdm thinks fluxbox is not installed and chmods the script 644 so it's not executable anymore. I'll just make a script that runs at startup and chmods it 755. How can i make it run at startup, before gdm? do i make the script in init.d and then symlink it into the appropriate rc.d directories? James
  3. If i'm a wuss coz i use gdm on mdk even though i have a lfs with Fluxbox well blow me down. Where can i go to find out about Xtart? I didn't use a source RPM i used a tarball. James
  4. I named the file fluxbox. I had it there, GDM obviously wanted to remove it. Maybe Someone install the RPM and post some files. I'm sure like you tyme tere's somewhere else, but where? I've got it working in my LFS but that's a VERY different situation, its in my .xinitrc that is run when i startx from a command line. James
  5. I've compiled and installed fuxbox from source as thr RPM package was, er very slow starting programs. I don't have a KDE or QT package in sight on my system and I use GDM as my Display manager. However i'll make a script in /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions/ and call it fluxbox and chmod it appropriately. When i next go into the ogin screen it's an option. Howver the second time it isn't an option. I'm sure i have to modify another file too but what? BTW Fluxbox works fine - when i'm in it - and is very fast, faster than gnome. James
  6. I have no idea what brand it is, it was a surplus at my fathers work and we needed one so he brought it home and i chucked it in. We needed it to have the internet on this computer. And he doesn't care about linux, he just said bad luck if it doesn't work. I'm lucky it did in mandrake. Here is what harddrake said about it Vendor: ‎DEC Bus: ‎PCI Bus identification: ‎1011:19:1011:1111 Location on the bus: ‎0:b:0 Description: ‎DECchip 21142/43 Module: ‎tulip Media class: ‎NETWORK_ETHERNET Tulip is the module i compiled for my LFS. I know it's the right one. What progam could clash in my LFS? This is stopping me from making my LFS my main system. James
  7. Actually i have a similar problem in the process of my LFS. When running depmod i get unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.20/kernel/drivers/net/tulip.o I'm guessing a bit with the path after drivers. My card is compatible, i've got it working in mandrake. I compiled the drivers as modules. The Driver is something like DEC Tulip. IT's what mandrake is using as well. Except mandrake's works. can anyone help us? James

    Gnome vs KDE

Funny the same thing happened to me. It never disrupted any programs though. And Gnome was faster and more stable than KDE for me. I used Enlightenment for a while, great. I now use fluxbox though. Very good. Even faster than gnome at launching my apps. But don't use the Fluxbox RPM. It was very slow. I compiled it from source and it's a lot faster. It's a possibility he's not using dhcpcd. He could be using dhclient or pump (pump unlikely). Oh well good luck James

    Pump tarball

Where can i get a tarball for pump?? Pump is a DHCP client, there are rpms everywhere but no tarball. The newest i could find was from the time of Xfree 4.0 and Glibc 2.1. Way too old Thankyou very much in advance James
  10. Todays build of Mozilla Firebird has the font problem too, However the milestone build 0.6 glendale doesn't have it.
  11. Anything to do with microsoft will give you too many of these sorts of things Although I'm still waiting for the "Honk if you hate Microsoft" [bumper sticker], but that might get annoying, everyone honking at you.

    modem speed

I even had differences between different versions of winblows. Linux being different? I never found out. I was cursed with a winmodem. try downloading a large file from somewhere in both OS and see what speed it levels out to. Is it the same? or different? Try to shutdown other things that use bandwidth before trying it. Because this is where it matters, not some connection speed that's been inflated by Winblows. James
  13. New kernel with Network card drivers, last time i had an incorrect one compiled into the kernel, now i got the correct one compiled as module. Also got sound working with alsa!! YAY, i can listen to MP3s now. Anyway it's my configuration that stops the internet working so i'll work on that. I'm installing X next Monday.... any advice?? I made neccesary changes in the kernel for X. Has anyone here successsfully set up a cable connection under LFS?? Did you have to do anything different?? Did you use DHCP?? James
  14. Erm sorry to triple post. I just installed Netscape 7.1 and it has the same problem. I''m going back to firebird till this is fixed!!!! James
  15. AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! I've restarted and the fonts look HORRENDOUS!!!!!!!! Instant Thumbs Down for Mozilla 1.4 I've tried changing things in the preferences but nothing will fix it!!! The fonts seem kinda "pixelated" the complete opposite of AntiAliased. **Runs around room screaming** James :x :x   :x :x
  16. if you have them both installed and they are both running fin then just su to root and urpme mozilla OR rpm -e mozilla And it will remove the version that was installed via RPM, the mdk 1.3.1. You most likely won't lose your settings (/home/yournamehere/.mozilla/) But it may be wise to back it up before you remove 1.3.1 James
  17. I have the texstar RPM and it's working perfectly. THough this is a clean MDK install Lemme guess. When you used URPMI to install it it would've given you some choices of RPMS to install that it needed. One of those choices for me was 1) libnss3 2) mozilla-firebird It also gave me another choice. I chose Firebird. It give you these choices because these packages both have something it needs. But the Firebird package does NOT contain libnss3.so and something else it needs even though it's supposed to. To get the packages you need "urpmi libnss3" and download this package too Try a"urpmi libnspr4" if that doesn't work then the package is at http://rpmseek.com/rpm/libnspr4-1.3-1mdk.i...PN:0:0:0:537358 These should make Evolution a lot more stable. Evolution has never crashed on me with all releases i've had. James
  18. I've got an old computer with an ATI 3D Rage Pro. I don't play any 3d games. I doubt i'll need to do this will i? I need to recompile the kernel definately now, i reformatted my Mandrake partition which had the kernel on it. I reformatted it and installed 9.1 cleanly instead of upgrading from 9.0 like i did last time, James
  19. Actually i like Mozilla 1.4 It's faster than Firebird was for me The only thing i don't like is it seems to wait until it gets the whole page up to the last </html> before it shows anything. Although i'm on cable it's not really a problem. But on dial up. I'd hate it. It runs a lot better than the one included with mandrake (i think 1.3.1) too. Faster. See my specs in sig. THemes? Well don't complain!!!! They made a few but the users haven't been making enough!!! Why not make your own? Or modify an existing one? But don't complain about a lack of skins because it's us users' fault. I'd rather they spent time improving the engine of the browser than making skins. James
  20. I've just reformatted and reinstalled Mdk 9.1, installed texstars RPM of evolution 1.4 and it works fine. Have a look at the link i posted to setup urpmi. URPMI is a godsend. I can reformat and have a working linux mandrake in less that 2 hours using this. No time wasted looking for RPMS of software. It doesn't have evverything but it has a lot!!
  21. Here is mandrakes database of hardware supported by Mandrake Linux http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/hardware.php3 James
  22. I installed Ximian's Evolution 1.4 and i've had no problem. Though there is a RPM on texstar's repository now. It might be better. TO setup urpmi go here. http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=6090 James
