  4. I didn't buy it. Early Last year i had to see a dental surgeon to have some teeth removed. In a consultation before the operation my interest in computers came up. He started talking about linux and wgatever and said he'd give me some discs. On the day of the operation he gave me cds of MDK8.2, Redmond Linux and PEanut Linux along with LXF December 2000. He was the person who introduced me to linux and Mandrake as well. I'd heard of Linux, and i probably would have tried it at some stage, probably red hat though. I didn't get to use those discs until early this year. Now i'm using MDK9.1 & LFS 4.1. Anyway that's my story................ James
  5. Whoah!!!!! The one i get is normally only $8AU

  8. Actually thae same problem with lilo happened to me yesterday. I deited Lilo.conf appropriately and tried lilo -v. Wouldn't work complained. Then i just went into the rescue menu told it to restore Lilo and it did with the edited lilo.conf Try editing /mnt/etc/lilo.conf Then just select "Restore lilo" or waht it may be in the rescue GUI Worked for me James
  9. Anyone know how i could get a copy of LXF in Australia. I would loved that contrib DVD. I've got one copy of LXF from 2000 and its great. James
  10. I was resizing an empty FAT32 partition. Using the space created i made my /home partition. I was prepared to lose data. I didn't care too much when i though i lost it. I only had stuff i'd downloaded of the internet and some programs configs. Anyway, mandrake mounted the new partition at /home but when i unmounted it all my stuff was there. Disk drake said it had moved it. Anyway i fixed everything in less than an hour, if i hadn't done that LFS i'd be dead, lost whatever you want to say. I'll use fdisk and mkfs next time. Edit: I always end up using mkfs anyway as diskdrake doesn't do it. Anyway that was a stupid post of me letting off steam. Mods? delete this if you want. But still I wouldn't reccomend DiskDrake to any newbie (like me) without much experience at command line (i've got some). James
  11. mmm, it turns out i hadn't lost my data after that incident. I have the new partition mounted at /home/ When i unmounted it i found all my data there at /home/james/ so i've moved it to the new one.
  12. DiskDrake is dangerous and unfortunately very buggy. I told it to format then shrink a partition from 2.9gb to 2.0gb and then make a new partition with the 900mb. It stuffed up. Is the partition in your /etc/fstab ? If it's there you should be able to mount it with "mount /dev/hdb5" The other thing is that diskdrake has simply stuffed up. Everythime i've made a partition in disk drake i've had to run "mkfs.ext3 /dev/hda5" manually. For you you'd obviously need to the reiser equivalent. IT WILL DELETE EVERYTHING ON PARTITION. What error do you get mounting it? Can you mount it in DiskDrake? James
  13. I've seen alt a lot, it's always the one with the RPMs i want, they're always alt............... James....
  14. This is a message to all newbies or who it may concern. If you don't know how to fix lilo/grub or edit your fstab or do things at a commandline don't use disk drake. If you do use it BACK UP!!!!! I used diskdrake earlier to shrink a partition from 2.8gb to 2.ogb. Then with the space made it created a /home partition. It also moved my current /home directory there. However in the process of doing this, the partition numbers were changed. /dev/hda5 became /dev/hda6 etc. Diskdrake didn't update Lilo for these changes so Lilo refused to boot to linux or anything. THis was fixed by editing lilo.conf and restoring it. When i booted it hadn't updated my /etc/fstab so that needed to be fixed as well. And to top things off when i finally booted my system it hadn't properly created the /home partition so the data that had been moved there had been lost. Luckily it wasn't anything important. I can download it all. My LFS is also fine. DISKDRAKE IS LIKE A DRUNK WITH A FLAMETHROWER Anyway, i've let off enough steam. All is fine now. James edited by Ixthusdan
  15. Would that mean my X graphic drivers, i'm using the defaults. My card is a ATI 3D Rage Pro. I don't do anything graphic wise except occasional use of the GIMP. Is there a way to compile these and not compile the whole X system again?
  16. I used to have to work with novell up at my previous college. i never installed the novell program on my system (plus, it was no good in Linux) but I could still use the network. just couldn't use the network drives....oh well. it was a pain because for whatever reason it would cause major problems on computers with less than 64mb of RAM. I tell ya, being a ResNet Technician/Troubleshooter was a pain sometimes.... You're on 2000 posts At my school they put monitoring software and the like on as well. I can remove it, some people say it's 4 times faster without, If i remove it i can still access school email and files throught the web portal. The internet connection is also configured seperately to Novell. But if i get caught without the software installed..... trouble. Anyway, i'll setup the internet connection in linux and never see windows again except for games. James
  17. I used menuconfig. Groan not another kernel compile, They take hours on my computer. Will i have to recompile X or anything else?
  18. Good, my school often get the laptops from Acer, maybe i can persuade them to have linux as option........................or even replace the horrendous Novell network with something nice and linux based........ James
  19. Have you got Mozilla installed? You need it for Galeon
  20. I can't get my networing card working in Linux From Scratch When running depmod i get: unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.20/kernel/drivers/net/tulip/tulip.o I know it works with Linux and I have the right driver. It's the same driver as Mandrake, and the mandrake one works. What can I do to make it work?? I don't have the brand or name of the NIC can anyone help me? James
  21. YEAHHHH!!! That's the spirit!!!!!!! To relieve M$ related frustration try the following as root type urpmi xbill && xbill What level can you get up to? James _________________ Windows hasn't increased computer literacy. It's just lowered the standard. ..A Microsoft spokesperson said, "while fighting software piracy is good for our business, highway robbery is our business."
  22. I'll double on that samsung one. Their products are mostly now linux compatible, or at least anything new. They've got an advertising campaign going now and on all the signs it has "Windows, Linux and Mac compatible" On the otherhand another company has gone on a huge advertising campaign. And this company is the least friendly of all. Micro$oft have been heavily promoting their freebies like MSN Messenger, Moviemaker and Winblows Media Player and saying how "wonderfull" they are. The advertisements are everywhere, bus stops, bill boards, radio, tv, even one of my favorite TV shows now had prizes supplied my Microsoft. and they are so annoying!!!!! And with them probably going to have a big dividend payout to their shareholders, it looks like they are trying to improve their image. Anyway a good game let out any frustration is Xbill, get it by "urpmi xbill" it's on contrib. Sorry to go offtopic James
  23. I'm sure there's an option somewhere in the options about making it use your own text colours or style sheet. Maybe try something there. I'm using Mozilla Firebird 20030707 right now so i can't check whre it is. Maybe try using Firebird. It's a good alternative if you don't use the IRC, mail or composer. You can download it at http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firebird/ The nightly binaries are reasonably stable too. James
