  1. Hey, of course we will help you here, but it would not be a bad idea to take a look at nVidia's own Linux forums as well: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdispl...p?s=&forumid=14
  2. Ridiculous. At such occasions, I am glad I took my distance from these fools at M$. I say governments should follow Humorix's suggestion and actually heavily TAX intellectual 'property'. That would be amusing. :P It would serve them right for interpreting the term 'intellectual property' in such an anal way... oh, and throw in communism! Whatever he thinks the definition of THAT is...
  3. Start here: http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=19847 For your question, I found this: http://lists.ze-linux.org/2004-05/msg00705.html Basically, someone with the same webcam as you is saying he got it to work with SDLcam (but cannot and would like to get it to work with Gnome Meeting). The Original Poster there also says that his camera is recognized as a "OV518 WebCam" And on another website: http://linuxforums.org/forum/topic-25126.html someone claims this camera needs the "ov511 omnivision driver", which, he says, should be available from http://alpha.dyndns.org/ov511/ I would try this website. Take a look at these pages in particular: http://alpha.dyndns.org/ov511/cameras.html http://alpha.dyndns.org/ov511/faq.html You can download the driver for your webcam here: http://alpha.dyndns.org/ov511/download.html Be sure you check your kernel version and pick the right one correspondingly. 4. Ok, let us know how it goes! :)
  5. Solarian, does this solution work for you?
  6. Marked "solved". For Xmms, you can start another topic if you want.
  7. Hmmm... someone beat me to it... Spiny? :deal: Anyway, it's always nice to see a problem solved. B)
  8. I'm not saying it won't work, I'm just being careful, SoulSe. Of course, normally, he will have no trouble at all.
  9. No thanks... I don't want my "X" to suddenly freeze when I'm on the toilet.
  10. Well, I like the reviews in LinuxFormat. And I like the "How-To" style articles in Tuxmagazine (e.g. how to make a Christmas card with Scribus). Also I like to have at least 1 coverdisk with interesting stuff, like a CD or DVD with a latest distro or nice games, software, ... And I use SuSe for word processing, finance management, other productivity apps, web development, internet, music and games. The less geek the better, although I do want to avoid the "total N00b" magazines. (no, I don't want to build a spectral oscilloscope or make a coffee machine with Linux :P )
  11. Yes, you can get them on Nvidia's web site, but as for me SuSe provides packages for Yast at regular intervals, but I don't always have the latest drivers this way. Just get the latest drivers for nVidia drivers. No one can give any guarantees here. But you should be fine.
  12. I don't have a lot of troubles with RPM either with SuSe... Yast does a fair job of checking dependencies and almost everything you could wish for is on the CD's/DVD. Only the "odd" program or if you want to install the very latest software coul give problems... maybe. For the most popular software there are rpm's made by contributors anyway. I'm having fun with it and looking forward really much to the next versions of the distro, and of various software (e.g. KDE, OpenOffice, Abiword, Amarok, ...)
  13. lol, I'm really not that experienced as you think... just been using it for a long time. I like the direction TuxMagazine seems to be taking.
  14. The X "crashes" or "lockups" could be because of your 3d-card and drivers. I had similar behaviour with my nVidia Geforce MX440 card. I set nVAGP to 0, although I'm not sure if ATI cards have an equivalent of this setting (or this problem). SuSe has something called "apt4rpm", although I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for... it is still kind of experimental too, I think. Maybe you could take a look at Mepis if you want to stay "Debian". Although I must add it wasn't trouble-free as well when I last tried it (about a year ago). Edit: lots of "althoughs"...
  15. Noooooo - I live in the UK. I got my first 3 issues for just £1.00 :D Unfortunately this offer ended in September last I then pay something like £14.98 every 3 months - which is still chaper than buying it in the shops. I just looked at the Linux Format web site Here and European subscribers can get it for 80Euros which is equivalent to approx £56.00 and still cheaper than buying it from a shop. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Sorry, must have confused you with someone else... maybe anna. But I think I'll buy a few more interesting issues off the shelf first before I subscribe.
  16. Yes, that's the "Tux" one I mentioned and couldn't find the website of it again. This website looks very good really. The LinuxFormat website looks really bad, IMO, although the magazine looks very good. @ ChrisM: you live in Holland, close to me, right? So how much do you pay for a subscription, if I might ask? 17. Maybe you could give a few other distro's a spin, like SuSe (I'm serious, but if you try with the LiveCD, get the 9.1LiveCD rather than the 9.2LiveCD, in my experience, the latter *eats* RAM) or Xandros or even Linspire. SuSe has a very helpful community at http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de/ Of course like bvc said, no one stops you from using Windoze... but I'd keep a dual-boot with another distro anyways. IMhO, the latest Linux distro's are on-par with Windows XP and may even surpass it within the next year. Maybe it's time to try out another distro. Also, I'm curious as to what sort of problems you have.
  18. With SuSe, after you install the 3D drivers, you still have to enable the 3D-option in Sax2. In fact, for some weird reason, it would only work for some people after a couple of retries. Also, some cards only work with later (latest) versions of drivers. Yast might not have (had) them yet. I think -and hope- that with the newest drivers and installation methods, it'll just be a case of installing and of you go.

    Happy Days

Well, you never know when someone with the same hardware finds this post, e.g. through the "search function", so thanks for this... and for the praise :) Oh yeah: enjoy your music
  20. Well, I bought it in a paper/magazine "shop" in Belgium and was surprised to see the large amount of Linux magazines they had (4 or 5 I think), although they also had tons of Windoze magazines... I keep wondering how they can sell all of those, since we're not THAT big a town (about 35 000 people) ? Only problem is, they're very expensive, probably 'cause they come from other countries in the EU (mostly UK, I guess).
  21. Hi, to give myself a Christmas present, I just bought a copy of LinuxFormat (64-bit issue). The articles are really interesting overall, only a couple are above my head for being "too technical"... still it had some good stuff like a comparison between media players, information on which tasks will gain the best performance increase with 64-bit, review of SuSe 9.2, first steps with Firefox & Thunderbird, article about FINK, review of DoomIII, ... Couldn't do much with the 2 coverCD's; 1 is a SuSe 9.2 LiveCD but it seems kind a slow, other contained a lot of software... as source and as RPM, Fedora Core 2 rpm's mind you, though they installed fine on my SuSe9.1 . Still it saved me from having to download OpenOffice.org 1.1.3 It's interesting, but kind of expensive (> €10 ) I learned of a few other magazines like LinuxJournal and "Tux-something" magazine (can't remember the name). So what magazines do you read and which can you recommend? [moved from Talk-Talk by spinynorman]
  22. Feel free to nominate any distro. I use and nominate my arch, bvc ubuntu, cybrjackle fedora, and others gentoo and other distros :D <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yeah... I use SuSe, although the look is so 'general KDE' that you could think it was any other distro really!
  23. I'll go and warn Ramfree you're away... :P Seriously, merry Christmas! :)
