  1. I'm one of those running freaks and use a Garmin Forerunner 201 gps device. I came across a script I can use to read the serial port and get the data into Linux, but that is as far as I've gotten. (I'm not at home now, so can't say what program I use to import the data.) I haven't yet come across any applications to do anything with the data. Garmin doesn't have any software that works in Linux. My interest seems to be a bit different from yours. I keep my running stats separately in a spreadsheet that I update manually. I would be more interested in a map-overlay feature.
  2. Well, the system is 10 months old, but I have no bleeding edge hardware. USB worked fine in 2005LE, and did for a while in 2006. It just seems in Linux that stuff stops working after a while and no one knows why. I have never been able to get any issue resolved through any of the three Linux newsgroups I monitor. I can't even get usb to load at boot time. Sigh..... I can mount stuff (like digital cams) if I do all the steps manually. But that was another thread that went nowhere...... Roomie claims he has tried all the suggestions made in all three newsgroups regarding his wireless problems, and none of them work. What he does next is his business. I am also on 2.6.12.18. I update every weekend. (Roomie used to also (when he had internet connectivity.)) I'm tired of spending all my time trying to get the system to work, as opposed to actually using it for something. Thanks again for your attempts to be helpful.
  3. Well, thanks for your help, but to tell you the truth, I'm giving up on this; I'm tired of being the middleman. I told my roommate that if he wants a high speed connection for his machine, he can either spring for another $1200 per year for another dsl line for Linux, or revert to Windows where everything works fine. If he wants to pursue this he can start his own thread. I've decided not to get a laptop, because I don't want to have to run Windows (if my desktop is Linux), and I don't want additonal dsl costs. I still have usb problems. It hasn't worked right for months. So, I'm also debating whether or not to stay with Linux anyway. However, thanks for the help.
  4. Do I have to change the configuration in the router to do this? (or in my directly connected machine as well?)
  5. I'm not sure how to check in Windows "to see if it receives DHCP across wireless." I'll double check, but I don't believe my static ip address was ever keyed into my roommate's Windows machine. In which case, how does it work in Windows? I don't use Windows, but my roommate (for whom we are trying to set up this wireless connection) dual boots. His Windows connectivity is fine. He just has Linux issues. I'll have to check this. Guess I'll have to see how to set this up. Haven't a clue at the moment.
  6. Don't know if the following helps clarify anything: When I originally installed Mandriva 2006 (i didn't have a separate router at the time) I set up the machine to receive its ip address via DHCP from the Westell modem and had no problems. As it happens, I DO have a static ip address, but I never had to key that ip address in during the Mandriva installation. The instructions I used for hooking up the Linksys router to the BellSouth Westell modem are here: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/6323 Is this methodology perhaps not suitable for retrieving the ip address via DHCP for the router? I am hooked up via Bridged Ethernet from the Westell modem to the Linksys router. The Westell modem is both a modem and router, but, if I understand correctly, the Bridged Ethernet mode should just pass off all the routing functions to Linksys. My machine is hard-connected to the router and I have no connectivity problems, so I am assuming that it is giving out an ip address via DHCP. Is it perhaps not doing so for the wireless machine? Thanks for your help.
  7. By the way, we know the hardware is working ok. He has no problem when dual booted into Windows. Will try your suggestions shortly.

  10. Did this, but it had no effect on anything. As was pointed out in other newsgroups "You've got no connection (as is evident from the fact that all the quality measures read 0 and you have no IP address - well, you have an IPv6 one, but that means nothing)." So, still looking for suggestions.
  11. My buddy and I would be happy to use console or command line or anything that works. The ndiswrapper seems to be fine. The problem seems to be with the configuring of the wireless card. Here is the output you requested: ndiswrapper -l Installed drivers: bcmwl5 driver installed rt2500 driver installed rt61 driver installed, hardware present # rt61 is the correct driver for this device # modprobe.conf alias eth0 8139too alias sound-slot-0 es1371 install scsi_hostadapter /sbin/modprobe sata_uli; /bin/true alias sound-slot-1 es1371 remove snd-intel8x0 /sbin/modprobe --first-time -r --ignore-remove snd-intel8x0 install snd-intel8x0 /sbin/modprobe --first-time --ignore-install snd-intel8x0 install usb-interface /sbin/modprobe ohci-hcd; /sbin/modprobe ehci-hcd; /bin/true alias eth1 driverloader install rt2500 /bin/true alias wlan0 ndiswrapper # Line 9 "install rt2500 /bin/true" appears to be installing the wrong driver for this device. It should be rt61.# modeprobe.preload # /etc/modprobe.preload: kernel modules to load at boot time. # # This file should contain the names of kernel modules that are # to be loaded at boot time, one per line. Comments begin with # a `#', and everything on the line after them are ignored. # this file is for module-init-tools (kernel 2.5 and above) ONLY # for old kernel use /etc/modules amd64-agp amd64-agp Why would this entry be repeated?
  12. Been fighting this a couple of weeks, so I guess its time to ask for help. I think everything is set up right as regards ndsiwrapper, and hardware is ok since it works in Windows. I think the problem is in actually configuring the card. 13. Frankly, I liked ilia_kr's original, corporate-looking or otherwise.
  14. Well, adding "/sbin/udevstart" to the end of "/etc/rc.d/rc.local" did nothing. However, I replaced "/sbin/udevstart" with "service udev start" and that did the trick. I do see that in "rc.sysinit" there is a "service udev start". Why that doesn't work such that I have to add the same statement in again in "rc.local" I have no idea. At least this seems to work. My subjective opinion is that if a usb device is plugged in the boot process seems to take considerably longer. By the way, I notice that if I plug in a new usb device for the first time and then reboot, the system will hang when attempting to go into kde (autologin). I have to do a ctrl-alt-bksp and then log in to KDE. It then comes up fine. Thereafter, if I reboot again with that same new usb device plugged in, all is well. Of course, if I plug in a web cam nothing happens as regard to any automounting. But, that will be a different topic.
  15. Didn't follow that. You mean I shouldn't do a "urpme udev" followed by a "urpmi udev" ?
  16. Unfortunately, no. That is where I would have expected it to be. (Does it go by some other weird name in MCC?) Wonder if I should just uninstall udev and then reinstall. Would that handle the issue?
  17. Running Mandriva 2006. I found that all my troubles with having usb initialized and usb devices automounted was due to not having udev running. If I do a "service udev start" all is well. Of course, after a reboot, it is not running again. Where is the start of the udev service supposed to be? It should be started at a pretty low level, but I don't know where.
  18. I think I was editing my post at the same time you were responding to it. It seems to have just been a battery issue. Thanks for the suggestion though.
  19. I thought I still had a problem -- the camera kept getting disconnected and turning off. However, it kept turning off when it was no longer connected to the computer. It seems the batteries are shot. At least it is not more software problems. :)
  20. I executed the following two instructions: /etc/init.d/usb restart /sbin/modprobe usb-storage I then plugged in the cam and turned it on. By checking syslog I saw the following: Mar 23 22:03:20 localhost kernel: usb 3-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 Mar 23 22:03:20 localhost kernel: scsi5 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices Mar 23 22:03:20 localhost kernel: usb-storage: device found at 5 Mar 23 22:03:20 localhost kernel: usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning Mar 23 22:03:25 localhost kernel: Vendor: Sony Model: Sony DSC Rev: 5.00 Mar 23 22:03:25 localhost kernel: Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 00 Mar 23 22:03:25 localhost kernel: SCSI device sda: 253696 512-byte hdwr sectors (130 MB) Mar 23 22:03:25 localhost kernel: sda: Write Protect is off Mar 23 22:03:25 localhost kernel: sda: Mode Sense: 00 00 00 00 Mar 23 22:03:25 localhost kernel: sda: assuming drive cache: write through Mar 23 22:03:25 localhost kernel: SCSI device sda: 253696 512-byte hdwr sectors (130 MB) Mar 23 22:03:25 localhost kernel: sda: Write Protect is off Mar 23 22:03:25 localhost kernel: sda: Mode Sense: 00 00 00 00 Mar 23 22:03:25 localhost kernel: sda: assuming drive cache: write through Mar 23 22:03:25 localhost kernel: /dev/scsi/host5/bus0/target0/lun0: p1 Mar 23 22:03:25 localhost kernel: Attached scsi removable disk sda at scsi5, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 Mar 23 22:03:25 localhost kernel: usb-storage: device scan complete It shows assignment on sda. Since I have no other scsi device I assumed the addrss was /dev/sda1 I then executed the statement: mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera Note I had already created the directory /mnt/camera previously.
  21. Well, I found out how to find the address (from another newsgroup) and now it works. It would be much nicer if the usb stuff came up the way it is supposed to and the cam automounted, but at least I can now access it. If anyone has any ideas regarding why usb doesn't come up after a boot and the cam doesn't automount, I'll be happy to hear about it.
  22. I've used mondo/mindi both under Suse and currenty in Mandriva 2006. Check out the site: http://mondorescue.org/ I've done file restores and full restores. You can backup/restore to most anything including networks. You can also restore to bare metal. It really works well.
  23. I've got the feeling that you are referring to PTP mode. My cam supports that also, along with a proprietary mode.) I could probably Google up on that. I think I may have this device issue answered though, from a thread in another newsgroup. Don't know which is more/less convenient, PPP or mass storage. This has been a long saga. It started last Saturday when I tried to install a webcam without any luck. So, I plugged in a usb device (digital cam) that has always worked (to try to eliminate some variables), only to find out that it didn't work any more. See the threads "lsusb shows nothing" and "how to install (reinstall) usb". Obviously I would like the original problem resolved. Then I could go back to attempting the webcam thing. It just seemed that no one had any further ideas, so I thought I would at least get the digital cam to where I could copy pictures from it again. Then I would probably just give up on the webcam thing until some future release when maybe things would work right again.
  24. I see both hald running and gnome-volume-manager running, however the automounting of the cam I plug in just doesn't work. I have seen it work before on this system as well as on others, but it stopped working at some point in the last three months, and no one seems able to determine why, or what to do about it. (It has been 3 months since I last plugged in the cam, and it worked fine then.) Also, it seems that usb is not automatically started, as well as usb-storage. Maybe it will work again when I upgrade to Mandriva 2007 next year. So, since it doesn't work now, I'm looking for another way.
  25. Using Mandriva 2006. To be able to access my digital cam it seems I need to edit /etc/rc.d/rc.local and add the following two instructions: /etc/init.d/usb restart /sbin/modprobe usb-storage By the way, does the cam have to be plugged in before these instructions are executed at boot time? If it is not plugged in, do I have to plug it in and then execute the above commands manually? It seems I also have to mount the device using: mount -t vfat /dev/????????? /mnt/camera How do I go about finding out what the device is that is to be mounted at /mnt/camera.
