  1. I agree with Ian little space is a problem, hence why I suggested another HD. It is better practice to have /home on a separate partition. His suggestion is only because you have little space I disagree with that. I do not know the rational for that statement, maybe there is one At least 1 bootloader on the MBR is needed indeed To Iwata But nothing prevent you to have 1 bootloader on the MBR that calls another bootloader at a start of a given partition. I mention this because if you start doing quad+ boot and try many distro this is quite convenient If you have another HD, you can put grub on its MBR and make it call the bootloader where Zinblows is Also putting the linux bootloader into the partition rather than the MBR give you a chance to make a backup of your MBR before messing up with it edit added a good link on dual boot, sorry not about OSX http://www.geocities.com/epark/linux/grub-w2k-HOWTO.html I have no idea if OSX bootloader can handle linux, I suppose it can. Can it chain load grub?
  2. You need at least 3.5 Gb for mandy depending what you install. It is roomy in 6, but this is what I would use, 6Gb Anyway it might be better you use the expert instalation mode when it comes to partition and delete that 6 gb, and then make your scheme / to be 5 gb, /home 0.5 gb. /swap 0.5 or delete that partition with Zinblows (or a live cd) and let mandy deal with the 6gb prefer grub to lilo you can install grub onto the partition of where linux is rather than the MBR. The question then what is your current bootloader ? can it chain load grub? Otherwise you can take the *risk* to install grub on the MBR, but I would do some serious backups I would wait for further advice An easy one is buy a second HD, make your life simple
  3. thanks everybody, I must have tried to make my life difficult ;) It happens sometime
  4. thought of that but discarded it because maybe I misunderstood that did not apply when considering two different kernel versions I should try really, good point
  5. how about/ can you select/add to grub command line single then run drakx11 and test video card / display combinations also compare in single mode the xorg.conf not working to the xorg.conf of the live cd (you will have to save xorg.conf.live somewhere) do I make sense? also I suppose usual noapic nolapic acpi=off
  6. pop settings correct? firewall settings? re sound, in addition to previous post launch kmix or aumix from command line terminal, check sound is not mutted re sound you can do in a terminal su (become root) alsaconf it often works consider also reading rute linux guide, newbie admin guide, mandriva help documentation pdf and html, even version 10 is good background. It is a steep learning curve, but well worth it
  7. this is a good reference http://linuxmafia.com/faq/Hardware/sata.html fakeraid indeed I cannot find anything to help you if you have a live cd, maybe you could post the output of lspci for that controller, it might help future searches

    A few questions

Stab in the dark, how about these pluggins working on mouse movement, mayble prolonged click in digonal up to corner would do never used mouse movement, so just a suggestion other gset-compiz option / shortcuts maybe?
  9. Thanks, that sounds like it is well-behaved if it just plug gaps, and complain on the few oddities not existing anymore Will try and let you know (will be quite a few days)
  10. Background I tried to upgrade 2005LE to 2007 free. Installer said it would take 3h. <alt><ctrl><F3> showed enough dependencies error to suggest this was not going to go very well. Experience on another PC showed that 2006 to 2007 upgrade was so-so. So no surprise here, different Xorg and the rest. So I installed 2007 fully on a separate partition Goal I want to automate my transition and reuse settings from my old /etc. Want to know if other people have some kind of bahs script for that, sharing below my to do list So 2007 fully on a separate partition, means I still have my old /etc available (and in fact still a bootable customised 2005 LE). And this will be the case for 3PCs, and I imagine many other mandriva users. (I plan to learn how to do distro upgrade via urpmi, but lets admit for now that this not possible or wishable for whatever reasons). It is assumed that /opt was not on a separate partition (and well it was quite empty) It is assumed the security level chosen is high. The list is KDE centric, and desktop user centric (it is not a server). (it is all from memory so some path or filename could be wrong) So the question is: - does somebody know of an automated script extracting the list of packages installed in the old distro so this can be fed into a script which would mostly use urpmi to download the mdv 2007 corresponding *missing* rpms Alternatively, I kept a copy of most of the additional rpms I downloaded in 2005LE in /var/cache/urpmi/rpms so maybe I could use these one way or another to obtain a list of package names (ls + awk ?) Many plf rpms to install but also some tasks like downloading and install java 1.5, azureus... (I quoted automatix in another thread because I suppose something like ubuntu automatix could make part of this job simpler) The rest is easing the admin and automate what can be or at least display some diff -ru (I do not know how to do that exactly, but maybe sed could be used with a piped diff -ru to automate adding (only adding for safety) to the new files in /etc, with a Y/N question at each line) - e2label the partition if not done during install - backup /etc from the stock install - setup repositories for urpmi - set some file immutable like /etc/services, disable some tty loging, check that remote login to Xorg is disabled change /etc/issue.net (security tweaks) and all sorts like that - export/compare /etc/fstab (maybe some people taylor initab as well?) - export the shorewall and snort settings and conf files (ok version are going to be different so this can be a problem) - export the cron settings (boink in my case for snort) - export settings for smartd, syslog, i2c / sensors - compare settings of /etc/sysconfig, rc.local, xinetd, ssh, /etc/modules.conf, /etc/modules.preload - export extra bits (like aliases from /etc/bahsrc. Cannot remember where path is located - copy /etc/host* and /etc/resolv (cannot see why these would have changed from 2005 to 2007) - export domainame (needed to deal with openoffice 2.0.3 "bug" with dns reolution when no internet connection) - reinstalling driver for ndiswrapper (steps -i, -l, -m) if needed - export wlan0 settings /etc/networking/ifup-wlan0 (whatever the name) (WEP key and ESSID; my experience this went wrong during 2006 to 2007 so maybe format a bit different) no idea where special initialisation parameters are stored for fancy NIC card eth0, eth1, probably something like /etc/networking/ifcfg-eth0 (yes I do have 1 fancy parameter somewhere in there for eth0 - any fancy DHCP settings or fixed IP for some people (do not know where stored, no experience) - update rule in kmail so it filters email via clamav - check distribution lists and email address book (Kontact) is available via /home/user - export aumixrc (at least show a diff) - any tweaked usb identification parameters in /etc somewhere to do with automount (cameras?) - export sudo settings - compare hdparm settings - set /dev/nvram to world writeable (to do with kmilo or whatever for acpi messages, some laptop OCD messages) - export personalised fancy rules of draksec changing write and read permissions on some directories - any fancy printer settings are I presume in user space although /etc/cups have info in there, with gutemprint upgrade now in 2007 there might be little to export /etc/cups/printers.conf and /etc/printcap - export that setting in postfix somewhere that says that a human being address must be set for root (in 2005 this was needed so that automated security emails can be delivered locally without a full blown postfix, smtp and god knows what installation) - Is there a clever way to export the list of users and groups? (Shadowpassword?) (possibly? just cut and past content of /etc/passwd and shadow into new distro /etc) Misc other admin tasks - tweak perl source for urpmi and drakrpm so that rpms stay always in the cache - reinstalling root-tail (or anything that can display syslog onto the background picture) - create user groups as required and check k3b is setup properly - only allow users in wheel to su - change settings so faces appear in kdm - enable / disable services. Maybe easier to rely on doing it by hand with drakxservices - maybe sort output from lsmod and compare between two mandriva version - what if anything needs copying to reuse the gpg keyring (it might have stayed in /home/user) - any firefox settings like ipv6=no and bookmarks (presumably in userspace, so nothing to do) - any firefox proxies settings? Where are they stored in text file? - get an automated list of the extensions used by "old firefox" and download them (automatically?) - copy for those with modem any setup script if needed? - export any extra service script that one may have created - reminders: like grub password setting - reminder samba, ntfs settings (maybe not obvious to export?) - redo symbolic links for user supplied script living in home but symlinked to /usr/sbin - update any backup scripts that is partition name dependent - desktop export no idea what can be automated and what is already in /home (background picture, screensaver, icons on desktop...) - start submenus no idea what can be automated and what is already in /home (especially if you have taylored submenus) - extra icones on taskbar to be added manually, kdm themes by hand - special shortcuts in openoffice, (in kde as well maybe) disable java in openoffice... - special settings in konqueror (used to have to add %u to firefox command in konqueror) - bluetooth, no idea - backup new /etc I can do a bit of bash programming but I am not fast... So if I get something going I will post it here. Maybe some users are interested in collaborating to develop that script? Coding, testing, suggesting what typical admin modifications one does and need to be reminded of when "migrating" from one version to another. Ok some of these actions are not generic because I quoted the application I most use. But they can be generalised to software type (like email client rather than say kmail). At least you can think of the post as a draft shopping / to do list ;) if you went from <=2005 to 2007 cheers
  11. I tried the diff -ru method but had to give up quite quickly because the kernel parameters where either too numerous or the diff ouptut was not usefull because the same line in each file were so far away (in terms of number of line between them) that it meant the diff was a very very long output. in the old .config lots of line are prefixed by a # I just gave up at that point, thinking maybe I should sort the line first (alphabetically in case they were not ordered already, but then it meant all # would go together). Then I started to wonder if there was not such a tool anyway the difference between a stock .config and mine is massive: disabled all the cards I do not have, all the file system I do not use, some of the ip modules etc.
  12. I have a full new install of mdv 2007 free facing tasks like downloading and install java 1.5, azureus... and I am lazzy :D I have heard of ubuntu automatix, and the fedora port http://easylinux.info/wiki/Fedora_frog Is there a mandriva equivalent? Please do not say the kiosk. I am thinking along the line of a free alternative. Does anybody think there could be a port of fedora_frog to mandriva? At the same time maybe just a bash script calling urpmi might just do the trick..
  13. I have a minimalistic 2.6.12.22mdkcustom (2005 LE), I kept its .config.mandy2005 I understand one cannot reuse .config with "major" kernel version differences, correct? I want to disable in 2.6.17 whatever was disabled in 2.6.12. Is there a bash script/tool out there to do that? I have not come accross one so far. (my bash programming is very slow, so it would take me hours, but I suppose the idea is grepping any line in .config.mandy2005 starting with # and containing "disabled", awk the name of the kernel parameter out of that line and store it. if such a parameter was found, look in .config.mdv2007 if in there and not starting with # , if found then sed it by deleting line and inputing the .config.mandy2005 line (my experience editing by hand is that just putting a # is a bad idea, maybe I am wrong)

    A few questions

Saying that, and I have never done it, and I regret it now, all the home-made rpms or compiled from source software can be installed in /opt (if this is a different partition that could make going from one version of mandy to another easier). I have little wisdom on that, but maybe somebody will. I think it may address what you may have had in mind asking that question
  15. that error rings a bell, and yes you need a live cd I cannot remember if I used the force -f parameter At the time it was just a backup so I could try anything. and I thought "magic"? oh well cannot be right anyhow because I have transferred things onto another partition. Maybe I ran e2fsck than fixed the journal, then resize2fs. That was a while ago. Sorry I am of little help here Anyway Ianw1974 has a point since the beginning: sometimes/often cp -R will do rather than dd
  16. stab in the dark: how about trying the "mini cd" that is the one for ftp install and see if it behaves the same (just in case the kernel was different)
  17. I think we are all suprised by what happens to you. This may sound daft, did you try the cd on another pc (preferably with a different cd reader), and did you try with another brend of cd at a lower burnt speed. Did you clean the cd? That gone out of the way we can think of something else, especially if you have done all that already Also you can try to disable in the bios as much as you can (ethernet card, audio card etc.) and see if you go further in the boot. I do not think you have a bad ram, do you?
  18. exact mobo and exact keyboard model will help in the future anybody looking at the same issue and anybody googling on your behalf to suggest a solution. Am not sure how you can get to the exact identifier of the keyboard
  19. NO ! do not shrink, do not do anything to that partition, no e2fsck, until you have sorted the filesystem, man e2fsck look at the end for the exact name of resizefs or follow cross-references like tune2fs until you can find the name resizefs or whatever it is called if you install updatedb then you can do a locate on resizefs or resize2fs (whatever the name is, with locate you can look for resize)
  20. >>I figure it is out there on my system somewhere??? the command (as root in case it was not installed well) which skype should tell you where also you can install updatedb package then use the command locate skype (as root)
  21. how about using openwango? my next move when I have no credits left with skype
  22. This is what I prefer to manipulate iptable. Take a bit of time to get used to. It has a blacklist etc, the most flexibility because it is txt based. The problem with GUI is incompletness often, or untold decision they take Dshield.org is a great idea while we are talking about firewall
  23. [edit maybe the PCI card is damaged, 2 HDs on the PCI card givi the IRQ11 error so I gave up] motherboard integrated controller SiI 3112 (version 2), two ports, and I added a SIL3112 based PCI card, (version 1), two ports both have same bios version sil3112a 4.2.27 (27 or 47) I have put one sata HD on each controller. During boot (hardrake is enabled) I get "disabling irq11" then boot hangs Can two HD sata controllers share the same IRQ? I thought about passing an irq command to the kernel for module sata_sil, but how is it going to differentiate which card would need a different irq. There is no option in the PC bios for the SIL3112. (BTW 2 HDs on same card, none on the other and the PC boots ok) Asus A7N8X-E deluxe + sempron 32 bits integrated SiI 3112 [sATALink/SATARaid] Serial ATA Controller Silicon Image, Inc. (formerly CMD Technology Inc) version: 02 Thanks for any idea or pointers that would help my fruitless google search so far
  24. Urza9814, I would go with the above comment as well. the partition is 53 but the filesystem will register 40 GB (maybe df can be used to check this) You need to use resizefs to correct that. (and because it is "risky" maybe you need a dd backup of it! ;) I am not advocating dd against anything else, but dd is damn practical (like any tools to be used for the right task)
  25. ok, a contribution to the original thread, it is really worth trying 2006 or 2007 because once you find out 10 has a given issue you will need to install proper 2006 or 2007 anyway (the upgrade path is not really possible) you have an interesting experience ;), with my recent experience it is converging toward media wobliness and/or quirky hardware=install kernel maybe in need of TLC >>guess completely an aside but .. are you sure you want mandriva???? Still like it a lot, because of the ease of mixed command lines and GUI (MCC). Plus for advocacy or recommanding a distro, I think it is a good choice, so I need to stay current on it. I cannot really explain, I like it, but I keep an eye opened. Hence this remains my main distro. Do not like suse (packet manager :(. Have toyed with slack 10.1 (11 pending), last ubuntu I tried I did not like the menus. Did a ftp debian install (etch?) went ok on the laptop, but was gnome and would still prefered kde, so because of extra download ditched it (plus wanted to try freebsd so needed the room) Spending time on vector occasionally. Have qemued centos and stuff like that to see what they were like, but never in depth. I have a "toy install project" with gentoo and sabayon (had not time to progress it though). Will probably use debian one day or another
