  1. Hmmmm. Starting to wonder if you got a bad download or something. Question: Did you untar as root? That would have given ownership to root and not user. If so, delete the directory and try it again as user. Here's my permissions so you can compare with yours: [kelly@localhost MozillaFirebird]$ ls -l total 3892 drwxrwxr-x 16 kelly kelly 4096 Jun 15 17:08 chrome/ drwxrwxr-x 3 kelly kelly 8192 Oct 10 14:42 components/ drwxrwxr-x 6 kelly kelly 4096 May 17 06:31 defaults/ -rw-rw-r-- 1 kelly kelly 11551 Jun 21 14:24 firebird.gif -rw-r--r-- 1 kelly kelly 8416 Jun 18 17:39 hs_err_pid2085.log drwxrwxr-x 2 kelly kelly 4096 May 17 05:54 icons/ -rw-r--r-- 1 kelly kelly 708 Jun 15 17:08 install.log drwxrwxr-x 3 kelly kelly 4096 May 17 05:40 ipc/ -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 152432 May 17 06:45 libgkgfx.so* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 114204 May 17 06:45 libgtkembedmoz.so* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 16828 May 17 06:45 libgtksuperwin.so* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 12440 May 17 06:45 libgtkxtbin.so* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 102908 May 17 06:45 libjsj.so* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 458976 May 17 06:45 libmozjs.so* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 50668 May 17 06:45 libmozz.so* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 191360 May 17 06:45 libnspr4.so* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 399176 May 17 06:45 libnss3.so* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 173692 May 17 06:45 libnssckbi.so* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 15780 May 17 06:45 libplc4.so* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 9412 May 17 06:45 libplds4.so* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 133248 May 17 06:45 libsmime3.so* -rw-rw-r-- 1 kelly kelly 476 May 17 06:39 libsoftokn3.chk -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 418448 May 17 06:45 libsoftokn3.so* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 126244 May 17 06:45 libssl3.so* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 44176 May 17 06:45 libxlibrgb.so* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 110832 May 17 06:45 libxpcom_compat.so* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 914116 May 17 06:45 libxpcom.so* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 15064 May 17 06:45 libxpistub.so* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 5140 May 17 06:45 mangle* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 2959 May 17 06:42 MozillaFirebird* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 63508 May 17 06:45 MozillaFirebird-bin* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 8968 May 17 06:45 mozilla-xremote-client* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 17100 May 17 06:45 mozipcd* drwxrwxr-x 2 kelly kelly 4096 Jun 16 19:51 plugins/ -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 4828 May 17 06:45 regchrome* -rw-r--r-- 1 kelly kelly 335 Jun 15 17:08 registry -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 62648 May 17 06:45 regxpcom* drwxrwxr-x 8 kelly kelly 4096 May 17 06:45 res/ -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 10998 Apr 19 10:12 run-mozilla.sh* drwxrwxr-x 2 kelly kelly 4096 May 17 06:27 searchplugins/ -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 62604 May 17 06:45 shlibsign* -rw-rw-r-- 1 kelly kelly 193 Jun 16 17:50 Speedup for userjs file.txt -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 13184 May 17 06:45 TestIPC* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 4280 May 17 06:45 timebombgen* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 17276 May 17 06:45 tmModuleTest* -rwxrwxr-x 1 kelly kelly 27000 May 17 06:45 xpicleanup* Hope that helps a bit. Key in on the MozillaFirebird entries and compare them closely. My FIrebird runs fine by going to the directory and giving the ./MozillaFirebird command but I have it setup on a menu and launcher now so rarely start from cmd line. EDIT: Make sure you run it as ./ and not just MozillaFirebird... i.e. you need to type ./MozillaFirebird at cmd line to run it.
  2. I am trying to reproduce the problem here and cannot. Let me check if I am following the same steps as you. Is this what you are doing? : K-->What to do?-->Administer your system-->Manage users When I do that, it asks my pwd and I enter it and it goes to userdrake and all the icons and menus are available to be used. If I click the Unprivileged user button, it opens userdrake, but I cannot use all the menu items as some are not allowed (grayed out) Not sure what's wrong, but sounds like a permission setting somewhere is wrong if it blocks your root pwd and allows you in as unprivileged. Are you sure you can use the menus as an unprivileged user? On mine all I can do is view things... no setting changes allowed. Which version of KDE are you running? You can see it in K-->What to do?-->Administer your system-->Configure KDE dialog window. I am using 3.1.3 texstar here and everything seems normal. I'm guessing this is perhaps a kdesu issue too, but at this point it is too early to know for sure. EDIT: Did you by chance click the box "Keep password" when you used MCC or another gui tool? Or perhaps your kdesu is caching the password and you don't need to enter it? Either of these things might cause the situation you described.
  3. I disabled supermount. Same as my car: I prefer a manual transmission. Guess it is a throw back to my 55 Chevy and Hurst Speedshifter days! 8) But, K3b and MCC/Mandrake update/urpmi automagically mount and unmount without input from me, and since you do not need to mount music cd's there is little difference in my mind. The only time I have to mount/umount is when I have data or backup type cd's that I want to browse or use. So, I keep it off and avoid the chance of wierd things that were happening when it was on. :)
  4. NOTE: **I do not use Gnome and have not tested, but looks like the process is basically the same with minor substitutions. The normal caveats and disclaimers apply! After installing OOo 1.1 using both the 'net' and 'user' installs as OOo instructs when using the OOo installer: Desktop/Clutter Method KDE (Gnome?) : 1. As regular USER open Konqueror or your file mgr of choice and go to: file:/opt/OpenOffice.org1.1.0/share/kde/net (or substitue gnome for kde if that's what you use) Note: If you chose a different install directory like /usr/local your OOo files will be in that directory so you need to go there. 2. Drag the xxx.desktop files to your user desktop and release the mouse button. 3. A dialogue will ask if you want to "Copy here" or "Link here" or "Cancel". As far as I know, it will work whether you copy or link it, at least it does on mine. I can tell no difference in speed between the two methods. 4. If you want to get fancy, you can right click on the icons you created and add any options you want via the PROPERTIES dialogue. 5. Now you can open and run any of the OOo items by clicking on the icons you placed on your user desktop. This method clutters the desktop but is quick and easy way to open individual or multiple OOo components via gui. For a cleaner desktop you can copy/link the "template.desktop" and you can launch any OOo component from there by clicking and opening the template launcher. Not bad-- now we are down to one icon. Menu Method KDE (Gnome?): It appears that the OOo installer places the desktop files in your /home/yourusername/.kde/share/applnk/OpenOffice.org 1.1.0 for kde users -or- /home/yourusername/.gnome/apps/OpenOffice.org 1.1.0 for gnome users and Mandrake does not "see" them in that location. So... 1. Open TWO file managers (2 Konqueror / or 2 Nautilus, etc.) and size them to fit side-by-side or slightly overlapping. Go to the directory /home/yourusername/.kde/share/applnk/OpenOffice.org 1.1.0 on one file mgr and on the second one go to /home/yourusername/.kde/share/applnk-mdk/Office/Wordprocessors 2. Drag the writer.desktop icon from file mgr window 1(OOo 1.1.0) to file mgr window 2 (Wordprocessors) and release it. It will ask if you want to copy/move/link or cancel. Make a link here. 3. Repeat this pattern in each of the separate office directories and place them where it makes sense to you. i.e. Office Accessories -- OOo Printer Admin ; OOo Math Office Graphs -- OOo Draw Office Presentations -- OOo Impress Office Spreadsheet -- OOo Calc ; OOo Math Your placement may vary, but this works for me. It is a bit faster than doing via kmenuedit and made more sense to me at least. Kmenuedit: 1. As a regular user open Konsole and type "kmenuedit" to open the gui interface and insert the menu items. It is pretty intuitive. This is a "work in process" and I suspect others can add to this or clarify it. I am working on how to do it system wide without using menudrake. Any comments or suggestions definitely appreciated! :)
  5. Frustrating experiences teach us many things! :o Most of what I've learned about computers and especially gnu/linux comes from having a problem and figuring it out (usually with help from others like here on MUsB). When I went to college in '67 we used punch cards on a Univac machine that filled the basement of a large building. Since then, I've made many mistakes and experienced lots of challenges along my journey of using computers! Actually, Firebird documentation leaves a bit to be desired and the install info is buried. Once you find it, it is almost too easy to use it! As a general rule, it is almost always better to follow the developer's instructions than those of anyone else.
  6. First, I'm no expert, but my Firebird .6 works fine. From the official MozillaFirebird download site: I think you have made it hard by putting it in /usr/bin and it doesn't need to be there. You now have to be root to run it. As a regular user follow the instructions above and run the script in the directory on your /home/yourusername/whateverdirectoryuputitin/ by cd'ing to that directory and from console type "MozillaFirebird" and it will soar! I put a menu entry called Firebird in using menudrake within MCC System and it is as follows: /home/kelly/downloads/Firebird/MozillaFirebird/MozillaFirebird I then drug the menu item to the kicker and have a launch icon on kicker which is what I use 99% of the time as it is much faster to reach! You'll have to copy the file and do this for each user and root doesn't need to be setup at all on it. (root can run anyone's files right?)
  7. I'm a Kmail user. I tried to use Evolution in each new version released during the last year plus, but it has some funny quirks that bother me. If you need to use multiple accounts and gpg/pgp or ssl email I strongly suggest Kmail over Evolution for ease of setup and compatibility with users of MS forms of email. Bottom line, they both are ok, and it is personal preference. Try both and then choose, just set one up to "leave mail on server" until you decide which one you want to use full time.
  8. Tnx anon! You've got me on the trail of something. Wonder why urpmi can work a regular executable like the 'setup' or 'install' of the OOo installer? What would happen if I really ran it? Would it hose things or install them in normal mdk fashion? I'd like to figure that out and also how to use the proper options on the executables too... probably WAY beyond my present level of understanding, but peaks my interest. I may settle for the RC4 version, but I have figured out at least 3 ways to manually link the files to the menu system and you got me all sweaty over another possible way to use urpmi! Guess I am just a tweak geek at heart! and that's why I am loving gnu/linux! 8) EDIT: See http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php...p?p=69200#69200 for the ongoing saga of how to get your menu items back!
  9. Anon, Yes, I wondered about the restart of X since OOo instructions specify installing with X running. So I uninstalled and reinstalled with a restart, but still no menu items. How can you use urpmi to install from the installer? I thought it would only work with rpm's? Back to man:urpmi for me I guess. EDIT: so I tried something... [root@localhost OOo_1.1.0_LinuxIntel_install]# urpmi --test setup Installation is possible [root@localhost OOo_1.1.0_LinuxIntel_install]# urpmi --test install Installation is possible [root@localhost OOo_1.1.0_LinuxIntel_install]# urpmi --test install --prefix=/opt urpmi: unknown option "--prefix=/opt", check usage with --help VERY INTERESTING... gotta learn more about this urpmi tool. Looks like more than meets the eye! Haven't figured out how to do it with the options, but maybe they are not needed? Hmmmmm! Very interesting!
  10. Found some good info on OOo genl mailing list... Am digesting it a bit and think I have an answer. I already learned a ton about how the menu items and icons work in kde. Good stuff... I'll dink around a bit and when I perfect a method, maybe I'll do a Tip or FAQ for it as it is quite poorly documented and there are a zillion ways to do it. Gotta love it, eh? :)
  11. Thanks for input Chris! Well, at least it is not just me that is facing the problem. Lots of chatter on several sites, but I haven't seen an easy fix. I suspect part of the problem is with mdkkdm which is not really KDE per se so the integration isn't perfect.
  12. Running Mdk 9.1 and texstar kde 3.1.3 here. I uninstalled the old mdk rpm OOo and deleted the old OOo directories in my /home/kelly/OOo directory. Then I used the OOo installer to install 1.1. The install is fine but I didn't get any KDE integration at all. So it is "menuless" on the gui program menus. (but starts and runs fine from cli) I have seen several references on this board about KDE integration and menus working fine so it seems some of you know the secret of making it work. :) After way too much time trying to figure this out, I thought I'd ask for a pointer from someone who knows how to do it. I need to get back to work on other things. I realize I can make a quick link on the desktop, and can use menudrake, but several indicate it should integrate directly into KDE. I suspect since I installed in /opt/OOo that mdk cannot find the icons (they are in /opt/OpenOffice.org1.1.0/share/icons but are not visible in menudrake) or the program. Is that right? Any points in the right direction for a solution are greatly appreciated.
  13. Dragonmage: Got you covered... just sent 4 cd's via tiki overnite includes Gnome 2.4 :)

    Patching OpenSSL

Maybe the mirror wasn't updated when you tried or you got timed out. If you are having problems with urpmi or mandrake update not working because of timeouts, etc. then there are other choices. 1) try a few different mirrors but first check if they are updated by comparing with the mirror list at:http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/ftp.php to find one that is current and available. Generally one near you works best, but not always. (most are updated by now) Then update with Mdk Update or urpmi using that update_source. If that doesn't work: 2) I suggest you download all the rpms (5) via ftp or http and put them by themselves in a directory. Then open a terminal like Konsole and cd to that directory. then become su and enter your password and type: (don't type the '#' part though!) # urpmi --test -v *.rpm This will test whether you have everything needed or not and if it is possible to install. It should run fine. If it says "Install possible." then run this: # urpmi -v *.rpm and it will install the updates. Personally, I prefer using urpmi rather than the rpm -Fvh method that the mandrake secure site recomends. Hope this helps!
  15. Well, I got too excited and checked again. My father used to say, "A watched pot never boils!" (I hated it when he said that too!) My Estimated Time Left is currently: 1382 hours 05 min 32 sec Sorry rcxau you will have to wait a few decades longer...   Anna: This is more fun than the "sleepless" thread! I am concerned that even with athcool running, my cpu will overheat from passing all this traffic!  EDIT: always curious, I peeked at the GUI again... Estimated Time Left: 3202 hours 32 min 33 sec I can hardly wait!
  16. Got mine working and am amazed... downloading 9.2 rc2 now Estimated time left: 555 hours 56 min 36 sec to go! By the time it is downloaded Mdk 10 will be out and Mdk store will be starting to deliver 9.0 to the ones that pre-ordered in mid-2002!
  17. Motts: I sure do remember, but I could never make it work on my mobo using those settings. :( I've been hoping for a solution ever since I built this computer as it always seemed hot for as light a load as it runs. This package worked right out of the box though. It also helped me learn how to do the rpm -tb with a tar.gz file too. Pretty slick trick! Now I can even uninstall it if I want! EDIT: I think it might have to do with the kernel upgrades I have done since. I am running 2.4.21-0.25mdk now and it may have a better patch / mod in it than the original kernel.
  18. Has anyone tried this yet? I found a reference on texstar's forum and it looks nice. http://members.jcom.home.ne.jp/jacobi/linu...es.html#athcool He has some other interesting software too. 8) EDIT: Wahoo! Ran it using the rpm -tb install instructions and in one minute dropped temp from 49 to 41 C! Listening to a cd as I type and no sound problems. A bit early to tell if hd speed is affected, but so far I love it and see no change in opening applications, etc. WOW! Just checked sensors again and am down to 35C! That is 14 C temp drop! :D I am running abit KR7A-133 and it is KT-266 chipset with Athlon XP 1600+ make sure your chipset is ok with this!
  19. Thanks Ixthusdan! That helped confirm something for me...mine was the same but it wasn't working. So I think it was a file problem from the bad boot or something else I did when I setup a file or something. I urpmi'ed texstar's kde 3.1.3 rpm's and things seem fine again. Your earlier suggestion to try that was all the push I needed. Now I have the cool kde texstar logo when I start the GUI! I like it! 8)
  20. EDIT: I'd like to see what someone's menudrake setup is too. If someone with a working File Mgr Super User Mode could check menudrake and post, it might help me sort out the problem I have. I tried using another user account and had the same problem on that login too. I'm not running 9.2 yet, but I think I read on pclinuxonline.com forum that some of the KDE components are broken up / and now install separately instead of the way they were packaged in the past. The thought is to allow more customization and security, I think. GPG keys will be handled differently in package management because of this too. I believe they are also trying to decide whether they even want to put File Mgr Super User Mode as an option or not! The Darb or Vincent D. made a comment on that. I'll have to go back and look to find the reference.
  21. Thanks for the input from everyone! Ixthusdan: I have texstar's 3.1.3 rpm's-- that maybe my best option, upgrade and see what happens! pmpatrick: First thing I tried was Konsole and various options of su / kdesu konqueror... no action except for launch of pwd dialog and crash w/o opening anon: I run ext3 but might give a go at similar approach to file checking under ext3, though after boot crash (originally hung during mount of swap) I allowed it to correct errors (and that might be where some data loss caused this problem) From searches of google/google linux I see others with same problem, but various "fixes" and so far none have worked for me. Maybe I just needed a push to go to 9.2 as I was planning on taking a pass on it.
  22. KDE 3.1.0 in mdk 9.1 here. I use Konqueror in "File Manager Super User Mode" from time to time. For some reason it will not start today. I used it last nite and no problems, but had a stall on boot this morning and had to shut down hard, and perhaps corrupted something in the process. When I click File Manager Super User mode, it opens root pwd dialog and then launches the hour glass to kicker but after a bit it shuts down. I tried from Konsole as root and there are NO error messages in Konsole and had same behaviour as in the GUI. Regular Konqueror as user opens just fine, so it is only affecting the root user. I have surfed and tried a couple things from other posts (turn off preview; login as root and launch from Konsole, etc) but nothing works so far. Any ideas where to start troubleshooting? EDIT: Btw, Alt-F2 and "kdesu konqueror" doesn' t work either. EDIT: [kelly@localhost kelly]$ kdesu -t konqueror sh: line 1: konqueror: command not found So what does that mean? konqueror runs as user but the only error code I am seeing it this one. Hmmmm?
  23. I know many are worried about 9.2 and not able to bittorrent or download. Here's a solution http://www.linuxcd.org/ I have not used them because I don't live in USA, but have heard they are OK. Might beat being upset at download speed or Mdk store delivery.
  24. Thanks for your ideas! Problem is I am a total noob in gaming land. It is pretty fun but frustrating when I don't know how to adjust things to get them under control. I have read the "how to drive" tutorial and know where the joystick settings can be changed, but what the settings need to be to desensitize the joystick so it doesn't oversteer is what I am after. Guess I'll just spend time trying various extreme settings and see what I end up with... good thing I don't have to pay a body shop!!!!
  25. Hey this grandpa likes to take a break for fun now and then... I have a logitech Wingman Extreme joystick and it works fine for me in Tuxracer and Tuxkart. But when I try to use it in Torcs I am constantly overcorrecting and spinning out. I am also totally ignorant of how to calibrate the joystick in this game and figure out the best way to use throttle, brakes, etc. It is pretty hilarious to watch me try to keep out of the fences and guardrails! Can anyone point me to instructions on how to properly setup my joystick for Torcs? TIA! :)
