  1. Thanks for the quick reply, all. But I have to say - I'm still confused on one point. I'll try to clarify my question. Is Kernel-2.6.27-desktop586-0.rc8 the same as Kernel-2.6.27-0.rc8? I didn't think it was. Similarly, does kernel-source-2.6.27-0.rc8 match the desktop586 Kernel? Does kernel-source-latest? Oh - And thanks for the kernel-development tip, John. You've correctly discerned my motives here ;> and I'll take the time to research that too. j
  2. I've successfully installed Mandriva 2009.0 One Live, the KDE version, and updated using easy-urpmi, like usual. So far, I'm very pleased. uname -r tells me that I'm running with 2.6.27-desktop586-0.rc8.2mnb as the kernel. I'd like to install the corresponding Kernel-Source rpm before any update are made to the kernel and things get confusing, but doing a search on "Kernel-Source" yields two sources to choose from; a) kernel-source-2.6.27-0.rc8.2mnb (described as the source code for kernel-2.6.27-0.rc8.2mnb) and b) kernel-source-latest (described as "a virtual rpm that aims to make sure you always have the latest kernel-source installed..."). Is it correct that I don't want to choose a), and I want to choose b)? I'm making the ribald assumption that 2.6.27-desktop586-0.rc8.2mnb is NOT kernel-2.6.27-0.rc8.2mnb. Right? Thanks for enlightenment. [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  3. I installed Mandy 2009 One over the weekend. Had my share of problems, but most of them were self-inflicted, not so much in the installation, but in the download. (Oh - check the errata page about the missing printer configuration binary, if you haven't seen it already). So far, I like it, and Dolphin, and KDE 4.0.1 (or whatever it is) has been ok, once you get used to the idea of plasmoids. I think I'll like it, once I get used to it. But I have not been able to do one thing, so far, that was trivial in KDE 3.5 (and earlier) - that is, put pointer to an app. in the task bar - the quick-start part of the task bar in particular. I think it can be done; the Firefox button is an example. I'd like to put a link to Thunderbird right next to it, but so far I haven't found the right incantations. Has anyone succeeded in doing that? Please tell us how! Until then, I'll be reading up on Plasmoids! Thanks. [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  4. Many thanks, folks, for the pointers. I'll be reading the documentation and poking around (and experimenting) as I can this week. This is purely in the spirit of educating myself, here, so there's no time pressure or anything, which is fortunate, 'cause there's a lot to learn. And next, after that, I'll be learning how to spell PHP.
  5. Running Spring 2008 on a 2 machine network at home, and I thought I'd like to try setting up Apache 1.3 and serve my own web pages, just to see what it took. The install seemed successful, and when I went to localhost in the browser, I got an Apache welcome page that starts "Note: If you are seeing this instead of the webpage you expected, it's most likely because the server is not yet fully configured, or is under an upgrade.", and I thought it was a good first step. I can see that page from the other computer (Win2000) too. I was able to change the hostname too, so that I can see this file from both machines by that name and by IP. But then, by cd'ing to /var/www and then ./html (where I thought I would find the file I had just seen in the browser) I find the index.html page that would say only "It Worked!" in big, bold letters. I didn't see that. I have no idea where the file I did see comes from. I understand that somehow, somewhere, I'm not configured to point the web server to /var/www by default, but after two days of searching, I haven't found out how to do that (or where I'm actually pointing now, for that matter). So, my newbie question is, how does one determine where Apache is looking for files, and where might I find the documentation-for-dummies on this? Thankx in advance.
  6. Hum. Are you running 2008, RV? I did the update, got the kernel and updates for MADWiFi and NVidia, but was able to reboot an hour or so later, seemingly with no problems. Just a data point.
  7. John, another data point - I've been using an NVidia 5200 gfx with no problems, either in 2007, Spring, or 2008. (It's slow, but it works). It's a little older than the 5500, of course.
  8. Greg, that's a great idea. I'll do it (um... when I get half a chance). I've seen posts from users who've had success by using gmplayer (I assume that's gnome?) also. Sigh. I've been using Linux for about 3 years now, and this (sound) is the one area that still makes me feel like an idiot. Even wireless works reasonably intuitively these days, compared to this.
  9. AussieJohn, I'm so glad to hear you saying this. I thought *I* was going crazy with the sound problems. It may not be a total disaster in 2008 (my on-board sound words for the first time too), but it's nearly so. Javaguy, I think we'll both wait for this to be fixed in "spring".
  10. Greg, thanks. I had already done the "about:config" bit, and realplay comes up fine with the video. Just no sound, though, which is why I'm stuck thinking it's a problem with the codecs. I added the real-codecs (thanks for that information! I didn't realize there was a separate set). Still no sound though, even after restarting the browser. Oh, and yes indeed, the sound *is* turned up on the realplayer console too.
  11. Thanks, Dexter. I did that - installed the win32 codecs from plf, but that didn't solve my real problem, which is a little different from what I let on before. The real thing is that I can't seem to get any .rm or rtsp streams working right in realplayer (an example is found at any of the "recent program" links at http://www.c-span.org/homepage.asp?Cat=Ser...ArchiveDays=100 ). I get video, but not sound. Kaffeine crashes when I try. I've assumed it's a codecs problem, but even the win32 codecs didn't solve it.
  12. I've had on-going problems with the essential codecs for mplayer - the instructions simply aren't clear about where they go. Ususally, I guess /usr/lib/win32 if I build my own version of mplayer, b ut lately I've been using the version supplied by Mandriva. The README file says to put the codecs in /usr/lib/codecs if the pre-built mplayer is used "most likely". Love them weasle words. Regardless, I'm still getting some errors, especially on .rm files when I try to play them (but not on all of them - just some). Does anyone have a definitive answer about where they belong in Mandriva 2008? Thanks.
  13. Ah! You've defined the difference between "want to" and "have to"! B)
  14. Thanks for the replay, Scarecrow. What I get from lsmod is $ sudo lsmod | grep oss snd_seq_oss 29280 0 snd_seq_midi_event 6816 1 snd_seq_oss snd_seq 45968 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event snd_pcm_oss 37312 0 snd_mixer_oss 14624 1 snd_pcm_oss snd_seq_device 7244 4 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_rawmidi snd_pcm 68996 4 snd_pcm_oss,snd_ca0106,snd_ac97_codec snd 43972 18 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_ca0106,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_dev ce,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer Not sure how to interpret this, though. Doesn't it tell me that OSS emulation is indeed running?
  15. In Mandriva 2008 I've gone through the procedure of installing realplay10gold to my home directory, and in firefox, added the network protocol-handler to point to it. When I go to CSPANs page for America and the Courts (don't ask! It's the only place I really see and watch RTSP streams), I can see the video, but get no audio. I think I've done all the trouble shooting - my sound card is working, the volume is turned up (on the RealPlay quit, too). When I download a .ra file to $HOME, open realplayer and point it to the file, I get the error message I made sure that the win32 codecs were there, and also installed the real-codec and helix codec from PLF, but unlike the past experiences, I'm seeing video and just not hearing any audio. It's got to be the codecs, right? If they don't go into the $HOME/Realplayer/codecs directory, could someone please tell me where they do belong? Or am I missing something? Thanks
  16. Ah - Thanks, Scarecrow. That did it. Sigh - I can be an idiot. I saw the answer yesterday, but got off the track when I couldn't find libdvdcss2 in the repositories. Of course, at that time I hadn't used easy-urpmi to set them up... Works like a champ now, and once again I am a happy dude. Yeah, the 5200 is a dog (fgxgears tells me I'm getting only 950 fps or so, when it should be closer to 1500. Even with 2007.1 I was getting closer to 1200). Fortunately, it doesn't bug me because I'm not a gamer and its supported, cheap (second hand on e-bay, anyway) and much better than the ancient card I had before. When I next upgrade, I'll be looking at an 7600 or something like that.
  17. I had no problem viewing any DVD I tried under 2007.1, but after installing 2008, I get the message The source can't be read. Maybe you don't have enough rights for this, or source doesn't contain data (e.g: no disc in drive). (Error reading from DVD.) Uh-huh. I get essentially the same message using kmplayer. I suspect I'm missing a codecs. The alternative explanation is the recording industry is now living inside my computer's case. That would not be a good thing. I've already downloaded and installed all the relevant codecs that I see from the repositories, so I'm at a loss (a loss of functionality, actually, and I hate that when I upgrade). Other relevant information: nvidia gforce fx 5200 video card running with the driver supplied by Mandriva (which is 100.14.19, I believe) which is supporting Compiz-fusion wonderfully, btw, a Sony 830A DVD player that has worked perfectly for a month (including burning a installing of both 2008 One and 2008 Free), and a Athlon 64 3800+ with 1 gig ram.
  18. I had a most unusual occurance. I started bittorrent at about 6:00pm local time (with about 40 seeders), and for nearly two hours had download speeds of well over 200 kb/s with gusts up to 400. With about 95% of the iso downloaded, the download rate abruptly and uniformly dropped to about 10 kb/s and less (with about 50 seeders on, I noticed) and stayed there. I let bittorrent run overnight and was still making progress when I left for work. By the time I returned home (about 9 hours later), it was done, fortunately. It feels like I was throttled by the ISP, but it's really hard to prove that.
  19. Gentlemen, thanks. I'll be giving it a try. John, I haven't purchased the drive yet - I was just investigating before I take the plunge. Thanks very much for the tip about setting the bios! - Oops - I didn't see you're second reply, John, until just now. All that is very good information! The drive I'm considering is indeed a WD. I'll pay attention to setting the link on the drive as well. Thanks again.
  20. I'm running Mandy One 2007.1 (2.6.17-13) on a Gigabyte K8NS Ultra 939 motherboard using an Athlon 63 +3800. Works wonderfully with IDE drives. When I install 2008 I'd like to get a new SATA II drive, and I'm having problems finding out if it's supported. From Linux Questions' Hardware Compatibility List, I got: Tested with Fedora Core 4 (FC4), 2.6.15-1.1831_FC4 Everything works, with the exception of SATA. The sata hardware appears supported but its not stable. The nvidia chipset sata is more reliable than the silicon image chip.: Has anyone had success with later 2.6 kernels, or with early releases of 2008? Is SATA II fully supported? Thanks in advance.
  21. Yes, and thanks everyone for all the help. I haven't had a chance to play with it (I'm going to try letting pop-ups through, and copying the .xpt file). I did notice that today I could see the ads, if not the story, without any other changes (so yes, I agree that they are still in transition).
  22. Yesterday I could few videos on CNNs main page using Firefox 2.0.0.4 and iirc, mplayerplugin (after a settings tweak). Today they re-designed their pages, and it looks like their script uses a version of the adobe flash player for videos. All I get now is a black screen in the applet. Has anyone gotten it to work? Care to share? Thanks!
  23. Ah! Now it starts to make sense. Thanks for the correction, Dude. I'm still pleading ignorance, but I think we've learned that Matisse and OpenGL do not play well together, at least, when using the NVIDIA drivers. For the record, I did not have this problem when I last used Beryl with the same driver under 2007.0 Free. OpenGL (and Google Earth) worked fine. And to Gowator and Scarecrow, I think you're quite right in your analyses. Scarecrow, this is perhaps a bit o/t, but could you tell me (or directly me please, to sources that explain) what tunable parameters affect this number? I'm not a gamer, so I don't demand all that much out of my equipment. But I would like to find out inexpensive (read, free) ways to get the most out of what I've got. Thanks
  24. Dude, I'm curious. Please let me know what you did to get GLXgears working with Matisse. It just aborts for me. I'm pretty sure that OpenGL wasn't working for me when running Matisse. I'm pretty ignorant about OpenGL, so I think I'll take some time to study-up on it before screaming that there really is a problem beyond simple configuration here. But at least we have a work-around!
  25. I turned of Matisse, and now it works as advertised. Glxgears is now showing me just under 1200 FPS. So I guess there's something in the interaction with Matisse that's the problem. Thanks for the suggestions, folks.
