  1. I've removed xine and reinstalled totem-xine, so now everything works. In addition, just now i've noticed that in a file properties it is possible to select the defoult program to open by clicking on its radio button... :D
  2. I'm using gnome, and i can't find any program in a menu that does this. According to gnome's help there is a tool in Applications->System Tools but i didn't fint a thing... I've done it several times, still .avi are opened in xine instead in totem as chose before...
  3. How can i edit mime types and programs that opet it in FC4? For exampe: mp3 is opened by defoult in helix, while i want it to be opened in xmms Is there gui tool for that? Thanks
  4. I installed livna's 'xine-totem' & 'xmms-mp3' - works smoothly and without problems! Thank you!
  5. I also think that it is not the "speed" problem, becouse MDK10.1, Mandriva2006 and FC4 run relatively smooth on my box (see my sig. below).
  6. FC4 is a good distro, even though i had some minor problems installing it. The major disadvantage of FC4 for me is that it doesn't support mpegs out of the box. How can i enable playback of divx/xvid/mp3 on FC4? Thanks
  7. can you show me an example please?
  8. How can i make Linux to automaticly mount partitions on boot?
  9. well, i've solved the problem, just had a missing RPM, but my FC4 constantly crushes & freezes & my god...
  10. When I unzipped the firefox1.5.tar.gz, it created a directory named 'firefox'. I haven't move any file, simply did the same as in MDK10.1 (there it works). There is firefox(1.0.7 version) binary in '/usr/bin', the one that was installed with the system, and it works fine. When i try to run FF from a terminal, it sais it cannot start due to some shared packages problem. Have any clue? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  11. well, finally it works, thank you ianw1974 and arctic Now i can play with fedora...
  12. I didn't find the menu.lst on mdk partition, and this is my lilo.conf # File generated by DrakX/drakboot # WARNING: do not forget to run lilo after modifying this file default="linux" boot=/dev/hdc map=/boot/map keytable=/boot/us.klt prompt nowarn timeout=100 message=/boot/message menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw image=/boot/vmlinuz label="linux" root=/dev/hdc7 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="acpi=ht resume=/dev/hdc1" read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz label="failsafe" root=/dev/hdc7 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="failsafe acpi=ht resume=/dev/hdc1" read-only and my grub.conf: # grub.conf generated by anaconda # # Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file # NOTICE: You do not have a /boot partition. 13. please post here a copy of your grub.conf so i could copy it and modify to my need...
  14. loks like i missed you 'mount' tip on previous post :D I did what you said, but after reboot - the bootloader sais that it can't find the file i specified. - MDK is on hdc7 partition - content of mdk's /boot: is there difference between vmlinuz and vmlinuz-2.6.8.1-12mdk ? [root@FC4-p3 boot]# ls boot.1600 grub map System.map-2.6.8.1-12mdk config initrd-2.6.8.1-12mdk.img message us.klt config-2.6.8.1-12mdk initrd.img message-graphic vmlinuz diag1.img kernel.h message-text vmlinuz-2.6.8.1-12mdk diag2.img kernel.h-2.6.8.1-12mdk System.map - should i fix the grub.conf to this? : kernel vmlinuz-2.6.8.1-12mdk ro root=/dev/hdc7 initrd initrd-2.6.8.1-12mdk.img root=/dev/hdc7
  15. I don't know how to view the other partitions, that is the main problem. if it helps, this is my 'grub.conf' file after iscrewd up the mdk part : default=0 timeout=5 splashimage=(hd0,4)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz hiddenmenu title Fedora Core (2.6.11-1.1369_FC4) root (hd0,4) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4.img title MDK 10.1 root (hd0,5) kernel /boot/vmlinuz initrd /boot/initrd.img
  16. I've just finished installing Fedora on my PC as a second boot and i have a problem: 1. grub can't recognize previously installed MDK10.1' althouh it is installed on another partition. How can i fix this? (mind the fact that i don't know heck in lilo/grub) 2. how can i view the content of other partitions, when it is not in the file tree?
  17. Since this forum is my main source for Linux knowlage and i'm willing to install some other distro, i'm curious what else do people like (except mandriva). Please pick only one disto that you like the most and explain why, so i could learn from your choises. Thanks.
  18. Let me refraze myself: :D I want to learn to configure the systerm without using distro specific tools like MCC, so if i change a distro, i still would be able to tune it my way. I know that Gentoo, Slackware and Arch for instance do not have GUI configuring tools, that is why they considered to be for advansed users. The basic step is to enable internet connection so i could get help online. - How do i setup this kind of connection lets say in Mandriva or Fedora by using CLI? - What are basic & usefull configuration programs/scripts common to all major linux distributions? Thanks
  19. Maybe this question was answered allready id different topics but i want to centralize the answers here. What are main Linux configuration files and where are they on a disc, so one could edit them from CLI rather from MCC? I know about these: - /etc/samba/smb.conf -> samba configuration - /etc/X11/xorg.conf or Xfree86.conf -> X server configuration I would like to know: - internet connection - USB configure - sound fonfigure - anything else ... thanks
  20. Back to fedora: maybe i just missed it, but since there are new versions every 6 monthes, what is the best way to upgrade current version without losing data/reinstall? Can one upgrade via internet or it is nessesary to download the whole CD set again?
  21. Is there something similar to the fluxbox' slit on other desktop managers? I know there is something but i don't what it is and how it works. It looks like a set of applets that show PC's stats. Can you help me with that please? look for instance on the left top side of this screen: image removed and readded as attachment by ianw1974 because it was too large to display. Best to add as smaller image if posting link, or small picture with link to larger picture.
  22. thank you, it really helped me
