I have my xbox hooked up to my computer via crossover cable. It works fine when I use the Internet Sharing Wizard in the 'Configure Your Computer' Menu. BUT, if I reboot my computer.....I have to set it up again. Sometimes it will work for a few days (multiple reboots), then quit. Other times, it stops after the first reboot. Any Ideas???

I have Mandrake installed currently. I want to try out Ubuntu. So I made my '/home' smaller and added a new '/' and '/home' partitions. My question is.....Being that I will have 2 linux distributions, do I need 2 swap partitions??? Or can they just share the one??? I would guess that 1 is fine, but ya never know...... Thanks

I dont have /Configure Your Computer/Security/Firewall running, but shorewall is running - I checked the services. I didnt turn this on....must be a default. So, what do I do?? I cant configure the firewall (advanced tab...) because that firewall isnt running. How do I configure shorewall?? Thanks

Well....I've read all this stuff about port forwarding, but not sure how to do it. I came across this: iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 6881:6889 -j DNAT --to- <host> But I am not behind a firewall...I am connected directly to the net (Mandrake firewall isnt running either - but i still get the NAT error). I want to use this command, but what do I put for <HOST> if i am not behind a firewall???

I have an Intel Pentium 4, 1.6 Ghz. My USB (Intel Corp. 82801DB/DBM) functions properly in Windows XP, but doesnt run at high speed in Mandriva 2005. I tried to look up hardware compatibility, but there were no results. It works, I was transfering at 4.5MB, far from highspeed. I searched around for drivers, but not having any luck?? What do you think?? Driver issue??? Where can I find them?? Something else??

Well, I basically said screw it and installed it again. I dont know enough to figure it out myself. Plus, its prolly easier for me to just reinstall it since i dont really have much installed. Thanks for your help

First off, i am new to Linux. I installed 10.1. It installed fine....I had it for a week or two, and no problems really. I decided to try 10.2 - installed fine and had it running for a week or two. But all of a sudden, things are going haywire and i didnt do anything!!! This will be the 3rd (if I do it) reinstall. As much as i want to love Linux and be Windows free - I dont know if thats gonna happen in the near future. I'll admit that i have to reinstall windows every 6 months because it gets so slow that its unusable. But I dont have to reinstall it (or spend hours fixing things) every week. My last error, which has me baffled - did it all on its own. I didnt do anything!! It was working fine, then just quit. I dunno if I should go back to 10.1 and hope that I dont have to keep fixing everything, or unfortunately stay with windows. Just getting a bit frustrated - I am trying my hardest to use Linux!!!!!

I cant see the error message?? It goes by too fast. Where can I find out what it is?

Hi....I'm spending more and more time at this forum - not good!!! :o I installed Mandrake 10.2 and everything went well. I have 2 harddrives, Windows XP on one, Mandrake on the other. I installed installed a few programs - fine. Today, I boot up my computer and it boots to the shell (prompt??). Everything says "OK" on the boot, then at the very end it says something very quick. Something about "Localhost cant be started"?? It goes too fast, I cant catch it. Then it comes up with a promt asking me to log in. I can as root. Then its in the /drakx directory. I dont know what I did. The last thing I did was set up internet sharing for my second ethernet card. But it worked. I even reboot my computer after and it booted fine. I dont know much about Linux, so bare with me. I am almost tempted to just reinstall it and leave my '/home ' untouched - but I dont know how to do that either!! hahahaha. Plus its prolly better to figure the problem out. Thanks in advance guys....

There are many topics on the bootloader, but i cant find out how to reinstall it?? I have Mandrake installed and everything worked fine. I just installed a new harddrive and I lost my boot loader!! My computer now boots to Windows and I can't boot to Linux (2 harddrives - 1 windows, 1 linux). The boot loader has disappeared. Actually, here's whats happened. I bought a new computer and removed my old harddrive and installed it as a slave on my new computer. This drive had my Linux partitions on it. How do I reload (remake) my boot loader??? And install it on my new harddrive??? I tried to run the installation CD, but the BIOS on my new cpu doesnt seem to have an option to make my CDROM bootable??

I am pretty new to Linux. I installed MDK10.1 and had it working perfectly (except for slow browsing) and I just upgraded to 10.2 and everything is working fine (except for slow browsing). I must say, CONGRATS Mandrake......Both of my installations went flawlessly and everything works great, except one thing. I have high speed internet access (3 MB/s), no router, running Mandrake 10.2, direct connection to the internet, no other computers on a network. I have windows XP on dual boot and the internet through windows is very fast. But not through linux. Its very slow. I've seen the mods for Firefox and done them, but it doesnt really speed things up - alteast to the same speed as in Windows. Bare with me as i am just learning Linux. But please help.....It's one of those things that makes me wanna use windows, because the internet is fast. Thanks in advance....

Thanks guy for the tips. I installed 10.1 and it works perfectly. I installed a few applications and have everything working perfectly. I am starting to learn a few things in Linux!!!! All that said, I think I will try and install Mandriva 2005. From what I've read, my /home partition wont get touched so I can always go back to 10.1 if I like. THanks everyone for helping make everything easier!!!

I am pretty new to Linux. I have installed a few other distributions over the past year, but end up deleting them in a few days because I didnt like them. Too steep of a learning curve for a Linux newbie like me. I am very computer competant, but know nuthin about Linux except the bare basics. I've done alot of reading and it sounds like Mandrake 10.1 (or 10.2PowerPack-but I cant seem to figure out what this is) or Mandriva 2005 might be for me??? Which one do you think is better for a Linux Newbie (basically anyways - I know a tiny bit)????? Thanks....Let me know what you think please!!! Or if you think another distribution is better, by all means let me know. Sorry if this is in the wrong place...didnt really know where to put it.
