  1. Speaking of RAM, all these tips here brought me to this... free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 515664 509264 6400 0 55380 238160 -/+ buffers/cache: 215724 299940 Swap: 0 0 0 Does that look like the right amount of free RAM for a 512 MB system? This is just after starting up.
  2. I'm fixing to do some reading on how to build RPMs. Any link to start? I may never build any but I would like to see what is involved.
  3. Hello all, There are some books here that some of you may be interested in. I'm just starting to learn a little C/C++ and was looking for a start to let me know what it is all about. I have programmed in assembly and basic etc but that was back in the 80's so I am totally out of the game except I do know what a variable, array and stuff like that are. Anyway check these out. Some are pdf and some are html... http://www.techbooksforfree.com Now I have to go figure out how to convert pdf to html so I can cut and paste examples! 4. I see...They release it and you guys try to fix what they (or someone) should have fixed. There is another thread where we are talking about rpmdrake and its bugs. I thought the whole linux deal was to write a program, debug it, write another, debug it, etc. and when you're done you have a whole system. It does seem someone needs to go back and fix some of these "debugged" programs. I see all kinds of little things that can get under your skin pretty fast but I can live with minor bugs and stuff. I'm running 2007.1 and it is the best I have seen for any distro. I've used a few others and seen other peoples machines and I am just hooked on Mandriva.
  5. Yeah, that is like saying if the dog is sick....shoot it. Ya know, don't help it, just get rid of it. I finally got rid of that F in kweather. You know, the F by the temp...took up too much space...I know if it is Fahrenheit or Celsius. I don't really need the icon...just temp...hum...I edited the source and compiled it. I just know enough to screw stuff up...not near enough to fix rpmdrake.
  6. When you install packages from the web it downloads them to: /var/cache/urpmi/partial (partial unfinished packages) or /var/cache/urpmi/rpms (completed packages). After it installs them it deletes them. If you want to keep the files as I do sometimes then edit: /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg and add: { post-clean :0 } to /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg at the very top of the file. NOTE: DO NOT DO IT LIKE THIS: {post-clean :0 } OR LIKE THIS: {post-clean :0} This caused mine to erase all of the sources in the file. Make sure you make a backup in case you do loose the sources that way tou can easily put them back and try again. MUST BE DONE AS ROOT USER. The saved packages will be in /var/cache/urpmi/rpms
  7. I looked all over for this. It is not in the GUI anywhere so you have to edit /etc/kde/konqsidebartng.rc Add: ShowArchivesAsFolders=false To the very top of the file. You must do this as root user.
  8. I installed kdeadmin ksysv and it got it from a repository. After installing if I go back and look at the package it says it came from the DVD. It is not on the DVD so I wonder what I have installed that I "think" is on the DVD. Is there any fix for this? I looked at urpmi.cfg and the sources look ok. Why does it think or tell me it came from DVD? Edited because: I forgot...it is 2007.1 (Spring).
  9. Thank you...this worked like a charm. This needs to be in the settings.
  10. Well, get a heavy weight in there and there ya go... So I'm working with ntfs-3g now and still having problems. I read so much I forgot what was for what. After a brain rest I'm going to go back and take a fresh look at it and probably get it. It won't let me change permissions and I edited fstab and changed the 222 to 7777 and it was all forbidden. I must have read it wrong. I'm going to check out what fercho has to say above after some rest.
  11. What are the Mandriva Enhanced RPMS? I keep reading this-n-that about these but don't really know the difference. Enhanced how? [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  12. Lastnight it said this: "The ntfs-3g driver is an obsolete fork of ntfsmount. Use ntfsmount from ntfsprogs-2.0.0 instead." This is the page: http://www.linux-ntfs.org/doku.php?id=ntfs-3g Ok, it is back to ntfs-3g and try to make it work.
  13. Ok, at http://www.linux-ntfs.org I found out I should use ntfsprogs as ntfs-3g is obsolete. I still can't change permissions. I can't unmount it to try and mount it read/write etc.
  14. I have looked all over and I find users having a problem with this but they install ntfs-config and then write to ntfs drives. No so for me. I installed ntfs-3g and ntfs-config and all went well. Until I tried to read a drive. It won't let me. It only works if I am root user. I didn't try to write because oh this problem. I'm running 2007.1 and can't figure this out. I tried to change permissions and it won't let me do that either. Open for suggestions. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  15. Boy I wish I'd of had this years ago. Might just make it a wallpaper! For those of you (including me) just learning where stuff is this is a must have. When I install a program I'm not sure where it all goes, but I'm learning. I can even compile and install stuff...big thing when you're new. I've been playing with Linux for a long time and waiting for it to get to where I don't need windows. Well it is just about there and I am trying to force myself to learn to do it in linux. Some things only run in windows so I'm stuck with it as a dual boot. Anyway, take a look at this. It will help you to understand where things go when it says done....done what...where? You can also find a program by whereis... If you read a few post down you see that the capitol letters don't belong. Linux commands are case sensitive...DIR does not work...dir does. I know those are commands but it is the same for directories. dir HOME will not work. dir home works. I hope this is not condsidered off topic as part of installing software is being able to run it...it's in there ain't good enough...gotta know where.
  16. It is here: localhost ~]$ whereis mcc mcc: /usr/bin/mcc /usr/sbin/mcc /etc/mcc.conf /usr/share/mcc [john@localhost ~]$ Nice to know there is a command with a name that makes since...whereis...which just don't make since to me... whereis: very handy

    nvidia-settings

Answer: I guess Mandriva does not install nvidia-settings. I went and got the same exact driver from nvidia (1.0-9755) and it said it had to compile a kernel module (don't know why, it had one I think, it had to), and installed. It all works now. One more question. Is there a better driver? I mean I know just because it is the newest etc, does not mean it is good for your system. Is there a better one for the FX5200 with Beryl? Etc? Just plain better?
  18. Here we go (again). I installed 2007.1 and it ran really good. I installed beryl and it still ran good. I switched out my Geforce2 MX400 64MB for a Geforce FX5200 to run beryl. It booted up and hung....then it went and all was good. The hang was to install the driver for the 5200. Well I deceided to install the new driver from the nvidia site. Here is where it went south. It said there was no kernel module so it compiled one. Well it didn't work. I gave it up and got it all going again, like it was with the 5200. I have no nvidia-settings I guess. When I enter it in the run box it won't do it even as root or anything. I can't find it. I've had this problem before and I just don't get it. I read about everyone else saying theirs don't work...mine don't exist I guess. Here is what I have and they match the kernel etc: dkms-nvidia97xx - NVIDIA kernel module for NVIDIA Architecture support Version: 1.0-9755.1mdv2007.1.i586 Currently installed version: 1.0-9755.1mdv2007.1 Architecture: i586 Size: 7961 KB Medium: "Mandriva Linux - 2007.1 (Powerpack) - Installer" nvidia97xx - NVIDIA module for X.org 7.2.0 server and OpenGL libraries Version: 1.0-9755.1mdv2007.1.i586 Currently installed version: 1.0-9755.1mdv2007.1 Architecture: i586 Size: 14077 KB Medium: "Mandriva Linux - 2007.1 (Powerpack) - Installer" nvidia97xx-kernel-2.6.17-13mdv - nvidia97xx driver for Kernel 2.6.17-13mdv Version: 9755-1mdk.i586 Currently installed version: 9755-1mdk Architecture: i586 Size: 2421 KB Medium: "Mandriva Linux - 2007.1 (Powerpack) - Installer" Ok, all seems to run good but what's the deal? Oh yea, for those looking for beryl info with the FX5200 it gets 240-250 FPS in the beryl benchmark. The MX400 was about 60 FPS. No water-No snow effects. It just don't work on that card (shader from what I read). With the FX5200 and the above you should be up and going. It's fun but I'll probally not use it much. Thanks guys
  19. I'd like to keep my updates and what I download and install. How do I make it keep everything? I'd like to burn them so that I can reinstall everything without downloading again. Thanks
  20. First for those who don't know there is a weatherbug for Linux. The main page and download tell you they may develop one. If you go to the link "Labs" at the bottom of the page you get to: http://weather.weatherbug.com/labs/linux.html They do have a version available that says: System Requirements Debian package: A Debian Linux distribution (Debian, Ubuntu, LinuxMint, etc) Red Hat RPM package: An RPM supported distribution (Red Hat, Fedora, SUSE, openSUSE, etc) JVM 1.4.2 Automatix: http://www.getautomatix.com/ Sun: http://www.java.com/en/download/linux_manual.jsp Internet connection I tried the Redhat package and it installs but hangs on run and goes away. I tried to uninstall the Classpath Java and install Sun Java but couldn't install the Sun. I got tired of messing with it and thought I'd try again after some sleep. And finally the point. Is anyone running this on Mandriva 2007.1? Should I use the Sun Java or Classpath (Just for general use aside from weatherbug)? Which is best? Weatherbug may be a lost cause because I can't figure out this requirement: Automatix: http://www.getautomatix.com Yes I know about Kweather and am running it. Thanks guys
  21. Since I installed Konqueror has been hanging up...then it will go, maybe. It has not done it in a long time and I went and read all the news and stuff. It just did...here while posting, not reading but posting. This stuff is all Java, right? Something is wrong there. I was thinking video or something but it is when I edit text in a post or reply box. This is the second install of 2007 and the first didn't do this. Any clues?
  22. coverup is right. set Konqueror to IE4 etc. and it does the same thing. Like I said, I like the part "please upgrade to a more recent browser". Konqueror is not old! Very good point about the ads...I guess this works out ok for us...we get a plain yahoo without all the crap with no effort at all...there is always a bright side!~
  23. AussieJohn, sorry to hear all that bad stuff. My install went fairly well except X wouldn't start but I got that fixed. Then I upgraded the Nvidia driver and trashed the whole thing so I just reinstalled and it went just fine that time because I knew the tricks from the first time. Now with a new install Konqueror is hanging up at times which it didn't do the first time. Also I can't install software with the GUI becuase it will not search and list the packages. A few quirks here and the hanging thing, well I wonder what is different this time? I was running 10.1 for the longest time then 2006 and they worked good for me. I love Mandriva (don't like the name change from Mandrake) and will hang in there for updates & bug fixes. I have a Promise PCI IDE drive controller that has never worked with Mandrake or Mandriva. It screws up the drive assignment. The first drive is b and second is a, all backwards and the boot loader is lost in the mess. All I have to do is plug it in and out the window it goes. I'll try it with this version and see. Unplugging it fixes it, but installing is a nightmare with it plugged in.
  24. I was in firefox when I found this out. In Konqueror it is a pretty bare page. So I open firefox and there it was. Go figure. I like the part "please upgrade to a more recent browser". Well, you get the point.
  25. I installed the new Nvidia driver and enabled the 3D desktop. MISTAKE! At least on my machine it was. First I lost my title bars and could not move things around to hit ok and apply, not even with the alt-click to grab a window anywhere. Then the desktop turned white but everything was there. So I clicked where things were and rebooted and got back in and no title bars, no sound, no network and I don't know what all. My refresh rates were hosed real bad. Told me my refresh rate could be from 50 to 59, though it was at 85 or so it said. It was a new install with not much I needed so I just reinstalled. I could've probably figured out what was up but why do all that work. It was clear that new driver was not going to work! I forget the version # but I found the link on these forums somewhere and thought cool...not so cool. I installed it as it said too but that don't mean I didn't screw something up. I believe I done it right and the driver is just screwed up. By the way, I had to be root user in a console without X running to install it. It wouldn't go anywhere but root with GUI for awhile.
