  1. Thanks for the quick reply, all. But I have to say - I'm still confused on one point. I'll try to clarify my question. Is Kernel-2.6.27-desktop586-0.rc8 the same as Kernel-2.6.27-0.rc8? I didn't think it was. Similarly, does kernel-source-2.6.27-0.rc8 match the desktop586 Kernel? Does kernel-source-latest? Oh - And thanks for the kernel-development tip, John. You've correctly discerned my motives here ;> and I'll take the time to research that too. j
  2. I've successfully installed Mandriva 2009.0 One Live, the KDE version, and updated using easy-urpmi, like usual. So far, I'm very pleased. uname -r tells me that I'm running with 2.6.27-desktop586-0.rc8.2mnb as the kernel. I'd like to install the corresponding Kernel-Source rpm before any update are made to the kernel and things get confusing, but doing a search on "Kernel-Source" yields two sources to choose from; a) kernel-source-2.6.27-0.rc8.2mnb (described as the source code for kernel-2.6.27-0.rc8.2mnb) and b) kernel-source-latest (described as "a virtual rpm that aims to make sure you always have the latest kernel-source installed..."). Is it correct that I don't want to choose a), and I want to choose b)? I'm making the ribald assumption that 2.6.27-desktop586-0.rc8.2mnb is NOT kernel-2.6.27-0.rc8.2mnb. Right? Thanks for enlightenment. [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  3. I installed Mandy 2009 One over the weekend. Had my share of problems, but most of them were self-inflicted, not so much in the installation, but in the download. (Oh - check the errata page about the missing printer configuration binary, if you haven't seen it already). So far, I like it, and Dolphin, and KDE 4.0.1 (or whatever it is) has been ok, once you get used to the idea of plasmoids. I think I'll like it, once I get used to it. But I have not been able to do one thing, so far, that was trivial in KDE 3.5 (and earlier) - that is, put pointer to an app. in the task bar - the quick-start part of the task bar in particular. I think it can be done; the Firefox button is an example. I'd like to put a link to Thunderbird right next to it, but so far I haven't found the right incantations. Has anyone succeeded in doing that? Please tell us how! Until then, I'll be reading up on Plasmoids! Thanks. [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  4. Many thanks, folks, for the pointers. I'll be reading the documentation and poking around (and experimenting) as I can this week. This is purely in the spirit of educating myself, here, so there's no time pressure or anything, which is fortunate, 'cause there's a lot to learn. And next, after that, I'll be learning how to spell PHP.
  5. Running Spring 2008 on a 2 machine network at home, and I thought I'd like to try setting up Apache 1.3 and serve my own web pages, just to see what it took. The install seemed successful, and when I went to localhost in the browser, I got an Apache welcome page that starts "Note: If you are seeing this instead of the webpage you expected, it's most likely because the server is not yet fully configured, or is under an upgrade.", and I thought it was a good first step. I can see that page from the other computer (Win2000) too. I was able to change the hostname too, so that I can see this file from both machines by that name and by IP. But then, by cd'ing to /var/www and then ./html (where I thought I would find the file I had just seen in the browser) I find the index.html page that would say only "It Worked!" in big, bold letters. I didn't see that. I have no idea where the file I did see comes from. I understand that somehow, somewhere, I'm not configured to point the web server to /var/www by default, but after two days of searching, I haven't found out how to do that (or where I'm actually pointing now, for that matter). So, my newbie question is, how does one determine where Apache is looking for files, and where might I find the documentation-for-dummies on this? Thankx in advance.
  6. Hum. Are you running 2008, RV? I did the update, got the kernel and updates for MADWiFi and NVidia, but was able to reboot an hour or so later, seemingly with no problems. Just a data point.
  7. John, another data point - I've been using an NVidia 5200 gfx with no problems, either in 2007, Spring, or 2008. (It's slow, but it works). It's a little older than the 5500, of course.
  8. Greg, that's a great idea. I'll do it (um... when I get half a chance). I've seen posts from users who've had success by using gmplayer (I assume that's gnome?) also. Sigh. I've been using Linux for about 3 years now, and this (sound) is the one area that still makes me feel like an idiot. Even wireless works reasonably intuitively these days, compared to this.
  9. AussieJohn, I'm so glad to hear you saying this. I thought *I* was going crazy with the sound problems. It may not be a total disaster in 2008 (my on-board sound words for the first time too), but it's nearly so. Javaguy, I think we'll both wait for this to be fixed in "spring".
  10. Greg, thanks. I had already done the "about:config" bit, and realplay comes up fine with the video. Just no sound, though, which is why I'm stuck thinking it's a problem with the codecs. I added the real-codecs (thanks for that information! I didn't realize there was a separate set). Still no sound though, even after restarting the browser. Oh, and yes indeed, the sound *is* turned up on the realplayer console too.
  11. Thanks, Dexter. I did that - installed the win32 codecs from plf, but that didn't solve my real problem, which is a little different from what I let on before. The real thing is that I can't seem to get any .rm or rtsp streams working right in realplayer (an example is found at any of the "recent program" links at http://www.c-span.org/homepage.asp?Cat=Ser...ArchiveDays=100 ). I get video, but not sound. Kaffeine crashes when I try. I've assumed it's a codecs problem, but even the win32 codecs didn't solve it.
  12. I've had on-going problems with the essential codecs for mplayer - the instructions simply aren't clear about where they go. Ususally, I guess /usr/lib/win32 if I build my own version of mplayer, b ut lately I've been using the version supplied by Mandriva. The README file says to put the codecs in /usr/lib/codecs if the pre-built mplayer is used "most likely". Love them weasle words. Regardless, I'm still getting some errors, especially on .rm files when I try to play them (but not on all of them - just some). Does anyone have a definitive answer about where they belong in Mandriva 2008? Thanks.
  13. Ah! You've defined the difference between "want to" and "have to"! B)
  14. Thanks for the replay, Scarecrow. What I get from lsmod is $ sudo lsmod | grep oss snd_seq_oss 29280 0 snd_seq_midi_event 6816 1 snd_seq_oss snd_seq 45968 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event snd_pcm_oss 37312 0 snd_mixer_oss 14624 1 snd_pcm_oss snd_seq_device 7244 4 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_rawmidi snd_pcm 68996 4 snd_pcm_oss,snd_ca0106,snd_ac97_codec snd 43972 18 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_ca0106,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_dev ce,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer Not sure how to interpret this, though. Doesn't it tell me that OSS emulation is indeed running?
  15. In Mandriva 2008 I've gone through the procedure of installing realplay10gold to my home directory, and in firefox, added the network protocol-handler to point to it. When I go to CSPANs page for America and the Courts (don't ask! It's the only place I really see and watch RTSP streams), I can see the video, but get no audio. I think I've done all the trouble shooting - my sound card is working, the volume is turned up (on the RealPlay quit, too). When I download a .ra file to $HOME, open realplayer and point it to the file, I get the error message I made sure that the win32 codecs were there, and also installed the real-codec and helix codec from PLF, but unlike the past experiences, I'm seeing video and just not hearing any audio. It's got to be the codecs, right? If they don't go into the $HOME/Realplayer/codecs directory, could someone please tell me where they do belong? Or am I missing something? Thanks
