Lando
I 'll install MDV 2008. I'm told that Lilo is dead ...and Grub is to be used . I don't know Grub .... Can bootloader be recorded on CD ? Where is a Grub tutorial easy and complete (with samples ) ? Thanks a lot.
arctic
Mandriva uses grub since 2007 as default bootloader iirc. Here are some articles that explain grub quite well: http://wiki.mandrivausers.org/index.php/Co...grub_bootloader http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/4622 http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/grub/grub.htm As with lilo, grub can be installed onto a floppy disk if you want. If you are more familiar with lilo, wel, it is still available, although, imho, grub is easier and better.

arctic
Actually I have never heard of the possibility to create a boot-cd with lilo or grub. If it exists, I have no idea on how to do it.
67GTA
Super Grub Disk. It will fix grub, boot partitions, and a few other things. http://supergrub.forjamari.linex.org/
scarecrow
You CAN make a LiveCd with grub or ISOLinux (provided you are a talent at scripting), but AFAIK not LILO.
Lando
Super Grub Disk. It will fix grub, boot partitions, and a few other things. http://supergrub.forjamari.linex.org/ IN >> http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/Sup...Super_Grub_Disk THESE INSTRUCTIONS >>>>> """" Select the appropriate Super Grub Menu option Super Grub Disk's English Menu has four options plus the Quit menu. The first two options are for those who like things quick and easy, Gnu/Linux is for computers with a single hard disk and just one or two operating systems when you want to boot Linux or install your Linux's GRUB boot loader to MBR. Windows is for computers with a single hard disk and just one or two operating systems when you want to boot Windows, or install your Windows's NTLDR boot loader to MBR."""" What do they mean ? ...that if I ' d stop MDV 2008 installation without doing the "bootloader step" .......I could boot MDV using SuperGrubDisk ? It would be fine ! 67GTA
It will restore/repair the MBR of windows up to XP, but not Vista, resore/repair grub and lilo of GNU/Linux partitions. You could install without bootloader and boot using this cd. You should check it out. I use it on my other test PC where the distros use different bootloaders. It is easier to just pop in the cd and boot the individual partitions. Gnu/Linux: * Fix Boot of Gnu/Linux (GRUB) * Boot Gnu/Linux * Boot Gnu/Linux Directly Advanced Gnu/Linux: * (BETA!) Fix Boot of Gnu/Linux (LILO) * Boot Gnu/Linux partition * Activate Linux partition Windows: * Fix Boot of Windows * Boot Windows * Boot Windows on a second hard disk * Boot Windows on a second partition Advanced Windows: * Boot Windows from another hard disk * Activate Windows partition Boot & Tools: * Boot MBR * Boot Partition * Boot Sub-Partition * Activate partition * Hide partition * UnHide partition GRUB: * Boot your Linux or another OS again * Restore GRUB to a hard disk MBR * Restore GRUB to a partition * Uninstall GRUB Boot another OSs: * Boot Hurd * Install Hurd * Boot OpenSolaris Special boot: * Swap hard disks and boot
Lando
Thanks a lot. > It will restore/repair the MBR of windows up to XP, but not Vista,..... Is it in working MBR repair for Vista ? >Windows: >* Fix Boot of Windows >* Boot Windows >* Boot Windows on a second hard disk >* Boot Windows on a second partition Does it boot also on a USB external HD ? ( ...also for Linux...) Thanks in advance .
67GTA
Vista bootloader is a little different, so it won't fix Vista bootloader, but it will boot the Vista partition. It should boot from USB if your PC is set to boot from USB, and it is plugged in when you are using the cd. I have never tried it with USB, so I'm not sure. It is only about 100MB last time I downloaded it. Try it out. Just burn it to CD the way you would burn a live CD. Plug in your USB drive, put in the CD, reboot, and see if it is listed as one of the bootable partitions. scoonma
You CAN make a LiveCd with grub or ISOLinux (provided you are a talent at scripting), but AFAIK not LILO. Why should LILO not be able to do that? I've created a bootable USB stick using LILO with a slax iso. Would doing a CD be so much different?
