DragonMage
Slackware is actually a very good distro for a mandrake user to "graduate" to. Since it is a light and simple distro (compared to Mandrake, most of the distro out there is a light distro :) ) You will see speed improvements in kde, gnome and stuffs (it just feel zippier). Don't expect a lot of easy to use tools like mandrake has, however so you better practice your command-line skills

It's one of my favorites! :P
fyrebird
I just installed Slack 9.1 on a second computer, still running MDK on the main one, and I like it alot, it boots up in about 35 seconds on a PIII 450,with 256 megs of ram (took over 2 minutes with MDK) and I can actually compile programs now, that I wasn't able to for one reason or another with MDK. The install is pretty straight forward, and not as hard as everyone makes it out to be, (I tried VectorLinux, sure it was an easier install, but then to get it up to a computer that did more than check email, and browse the web, the fun began... :D) Trying different things, I've had to reinstall twice now, gotta learn somehow, right? two big things that took me awhile, and couldn't find awnsers to in the forums, or in the book online, is 1. edit fstab and add user to the list before the "0 0" in cdrom and floppy so that any user can mount them, not just root. and... 2. if you use ADSL, and it says connect, but doesn't let you log in, try typing "server" in the DNS section of adsl-setup (took me about 3 hours to figure that one out, guess I should read more carefully next time...) and be sure and know all the specs on your video card, and monitor, you'll have to enter them manually. All in all, I like slackware alot, last time I tried it was 2.0, and the overall install, and loading hasn't changed much, which is good, I think? Goodluck with your venture, the two prblems I mentioned above were really the only trouble I've had with it so far, and once I figured them out, it was a breeze
