Does this exist...

Over the last few days I have been looking for top quality software that can replace what I have been using on windows. What I am wondering is if there is a best of breed comparison chart somewhere that lists popular windows software and what the best 1 or 2 linux apps are that can be used to replace it with?

I think this would be a great thing to have. Especially if it listed the advantages/disadvantages of each app and maybe contained a screenshot or two.

For those of use making the switch, it would be a big help.

So, does this exist anywhere???

Some software that could go on the list are:

A newsreader like Outlook Express or Forte Agent

An image viewer like ACDSee

Vector illustration package

mp3 ripping software

cd burner

etc...

I realize that most of this software is included within a distro, however, without knowing what the app is called, it can be hard to tell which one to use and even harder to tell which one is the best. (I realize this is subjective to some point)

Let's do it one by one.

1. Newsreader:

If you need binary downloading, you can use pan, its interface is similar to agent (not to mention same sucking up hd space capability). If you don't, knode or mozilla's own newsclient is good enough.

2. Image viewer:

Kuickshow, gqview, and tons of others. I just found out of an application in texstar's mirror called (sorry to say this, but this is actually the name) pornview. I never tried it since kuickshow and gqview are good enough for me.

3. Vector illustration package:

I am not sure about this one, but I think kontour could be close enough to what you are looking for.

4. Mp3 ripping software

grip, ripperX are good rippers. KDE3 Konqueror with audioCD-Slave can also rip cds right from the file manager. For the mp3 part, just download a version of lame or bladeenc codec and you can just activate it from grip or ripperX's own options.

5. CDBurner

XCDRoast, and eroaster are good cdburner. If you need a Nero like GUI, just download k3b. I haven't used arson yet, but I heard it can burn VCDs automatically.

Anything else?

After discussing this for more opinions, I think this should be a topic on its own. Knowing there is a place to go for the conversion to Windows would be a significant addition to this board further carving out an identity of our own. The oringinal author should put it on Board Feature Requests when the time is right. Other issues could include some that are now posted to other boards.
