Should I do XFree86 -configure, post that and then start again from there?

I believe that this should have the correct driver in this version of Xfree86 as it was put on the server on the 08/09/03. Now whether thats US date format or UK (I suspect US) it doesn't matter because xfree86 added support for my card back in July (7th month). Am I assuming ok here?

Tried it and no joy. Just to refresh peoples memories I thought the point of this was to get it to the correct driver and 32 bit? I don't see this 32 bit coming in yet.. or is that later

It's there...just doesn't know which it is. I d/k if that's common for ati's or not.

(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) ATI Technologies Inc unknown chipset (0x4150) rev 0, Mem @ 0xc0000000/28, 0xdfef0000/16, I/O @ 0xc800/8, BIOS @ 0xdfec0000/17

Anyone know if there's a diff?

BusID "PCI:1:0:0"

PCI 01:00:0

32bit? How, if all you get is 0bit, now? Is the module loaded? Have you back tracked and made sure all instruction were followed?

When you decide to start fresh, uninstall the ati driver>delete XF86Config-4>run drakconf (and/or mousedrake and XFdrake>install ati>edit/check XF86Config-4>startx.

bvc: Well, I know the former works.... The latter might but remember theyre actually in hex! Doesn't matter much til 10 or A but ....

Ive always just done a straight converiosn to decimal and dropped the zeros....

As far as I remember the XFREE docs don't actually say ....

mahiles:

Sorry, I jumped in on bvc for the timezone thing ... it wasn't going to work without the endsection....

Its good practice to keep the indenting and make sure things are closed off... regarding section/subsection.

You can probably understand 90% of the file ... (noone who has normal social skills understands modelines ...) it looks complex and bizarre but you can see what all the sections do.... Youmight not beleive me right now but .... try at least.... We all were in your position once...

The different comments especially under the video section are based on your cards driver so they are just passed to it. but the rest is pretty much just sections which all get put together to make a "screen"

which (in XF4) then goes inside a layout!

Ok I come back today and now I'm just totally confused. Think am might leave this its way to complicated for me I'll just have to stick with 16 bit colour depth. One last question though, instead of messing about with which driver it is etc I just wanna try inputting what I want? I mean, where exactly do I put the resolution that its gonna use and the colour depth? If it doesn't work I'll just stick with what I have..

The default color depth is set in the Screen section and display resolutions for each depth in the subsections. The modes are attempted in order, so put the resolution you want first. In this copy of my Screen section in XF86Config-4, you can see my default is 1024x768 @24 bit color.

Section "Screen"

   Identifier "screen1"

   Device "device1"

   Monitor "monitor1"

   DefaultColorDepth 24

   Subsection "Display"

       Depth 8

       Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

   EndSubsection

   Subsection "Display"

       Depth 15

       Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

   EndSubsection

   Subsection "Display"

       Depth 16

       Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

   EndSubsection

   Subsection "Display"

       Depth 24

       Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

   EndSubsection

Thanks, after playing with it for a while I've realised the only driver that I've got for my card only supports up to 24 bit so I've gone with that. Thanks for all your help everyone :)

Well, if you have 24bit you're good to go. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but that's it with XFree86 and gaming site's concerning NVIDIA say 24 is 32 in XFree86. I have yet to see anyone with a working 32bit when it come to XF86Config-4, that is.

Any X11 experts care to sed some light on this?

Look.... you edited it yourself ...

Cool....

Linux often looks more complex than it is....

XFree86 is a big file and when you look at it all together its complicated but each section by itself is pretty logical...

eg the default depth does just that.

the order of the resolutions is the order they cycle when you CTRL+ALT+(+ or -)

Like I said the modelines bit is pretty complex, I sorta understand it but some parts Ive just never looked into...

Im sure if I do look though it will turn out to actually be quite simple and logical...

Good luck with the new config :D
