Guest mahiles
Is there a way to set up the X server from the command line? Thanks..
tyme
that depends on what you want to do, and how you want to do it. you can run xf86config and try to set it up with that, or you can just edit the XF86Config-4 file. i would choose the second, because most likely if you post enough info (video card, monitor, etc.) we could probably point you in the right direction. Gowator
yep another way too. From runl level 3 (no graphical interface) You can run XFree86 -configure This stats the X server which tries to autodetect everything. It writes it to a file in the home directory It then tells you how to try that file as your XF86Config-4 If it works you can backup the old one and copy this one to /etc/X11 then do your tweaking with your choice of tool once inside X (I prefer xf86cfg) Its a combination of the most powerful possibilites with an easy interface, It does stuff the MCC can't even start to do. Like multiple mice (graphics tablets etc) dual or quad head etc. and allows you to play with your timings interactively.
bvc
XFdrake I use XFdrake --expert --noauto This of course being for mandrake only and basically just skips drakconf
Guest mahiles
I still can't select 32 bit it only lets me select 16. Can I edit my config file so it automatically goes into 1024 X 768 at 32 bit? Also it says my monitors working at 0Hz refresh which can't be rite? bvc
Because you're using the vesa driver Driver "vesa" instead of the ati.... ....I d/k what the ati is called.
Guest mahiles
If I select ati in XFdrake then the x server does not start..
Germ
which ati card? If it's a newer card, you might try the updated xfree86 from mandrake update.
Guest mahiles
It's a Radeon 9600 Pro.. Mandrake update showed some Xfree86 files which ended with 4.3-8.2. I found some other files (downloads page on Mandrake Users) which ended in 4.3-22. I assumed the ones ending in 22 were more up-to-date so I downloaded and installed those ones. The others do not appear on Mandrake Update anymore. However I'm still confused with something.. The 1st version of XFree86 which properly supports my card is 4.3.99.8. So have I downloaded rpms that are too old?? If so where can I get some more up to date ones? Thanks..
ac_dispatcher
Madpanguin has an artical on the new ATI Linux drivers: http://www.madpenguin.org/modules.php?op=m...order=0&thold=0 In XF86 did you try "ati" or "radeon" ? Germ
I think I would use the 4.3-8.2 from Mandrake Update. They specifically address ati problems and you might want to grab the linux drivers from ati's website. I would suggest the DRI project drivers, but I think they only support up to a 9200. Germ
mahiles, try this in your config under Section "Device" BoardName "ATI Radeon" Driver "radeon"
Guest mahiles
Tried it and no luck :( X server won't start.. Will try 4.3-8.2 once I get home :)
bvc
All the Xserver needs is Section "Device" Identifier "Card0" Driver "driver_name" Make sure the Server Section of the file has the correct "Identifier"'s. What error messages do you get when it fails? What does /var/log/XFree86.0.log say?
Guest mahiles
Off the top of my head it says "0 screens found" as the error... XFDrake has changed the file layout and whats in it now for some reason although I told it to cancel all changes :? Finally are we certain getting the 4.3-8.2 files will solve the problem? I'm on dialup and it gets painful waiting for these things to download..
