Guest johnKFT
I use a Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop with a Rage Mobility P/M agp 2x video card, running Mandrake 9.1 with XFree86-4.3. Any OpenGL program runs like a fork in treacle and gives this well known error: Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0". I have done considerable and painful research into this and the following points come to light: 1 dri and extension XFree86-DRI load Ok according to the log 2 According to someone knowledgeable at Red Hat this does not necessarily mean they are initializing - apparently DRI might not like the video card. 3 I found my way to the gatos site and installed the following according to instructions: ati.2-4.3.exp10-0.1mdk.i586.rpm and drm-kernel-1.100.0.10-0.1mdk.i586.rpm. No change. I now have really no idea what to do next; this seems an incredibly confusing topic - even for Linux!. Can anyone help me please? I had an earlier discussion here about this but it lead me no further than the above. I posted the above on dri-users list a couple of weeks ago and have had no response. Can anyone point me in a useful direction please?
ezroller
have you seen this page yet? this is where I got my info in order to get dri working. http://dri.sourceforge.net/
SoulSe
I had similar problems, also with a Mobility chipset. I downloaded the DRI from the site ezroller mentioned, although, when Mandy 9.1 came out with the latest version of XFree, my problems dissapeared. Guest johnKFT
Thanks folks. I had a good look at the site and read all the stuff but my card did not appear to be covered. I downloaded the driver for the ati Rage 128 card but mine (according to HardDrake) is ati Rage Mobility P/M 2x agp. Do you think the Rage 128 driver will work? I am reluctant to run the install script and have my kernel modules interfered with unless the consensus is that it will be OK.
Germ
I think the driver will work with your card. If not, the install script backs up all the replaced files. If the driver does not work just run: ./install.sh restore The restore option works. I've used it a couple of times.
Guest johnKFT
Thanks Germ, This is what I got: The script will now compile the DRM kernel modules for your machine. Press ENTER to continue or CTRL-C to exit. Compiling... ERROR: Kernel modules did not compile The DRI drivers can not be installed without the latest kernel modules. Installation will be aborted. See the dri.log file for information on what went wrong. This is the log entry: Makefile.linux:136: *** Cannot find a kernel config file. Stop. Help! Pierre Baco
Makefile.linux:136: *** Cannot find a kernel config file. Stop. Help! Looks like /usr/src/linux/.config or /boot/config.2.4.**** is missing, no ?
Germ
Yes, it sounds like the kernel sources are not installed. johnKFT, install the kernel-source rpm for your kernel.
Guest johnKFT
Well, I have had a bit of an explore and discovered the following: 1 I have /boot/config-2.4.21-0.13mdk 2 I do not have the folder /usr/src/linux 3 I have to download kernel-source as it is on CD3 which I do not have, and it is 156MB!! 4 I do not know what to do! Help, again!
Germ
It's around 156MB installed. The RPM is around 36MB. It's required in order to use the drivers from the DRI Project. Got a buddy with a fat pipe? Actually it wouldn't be too bad using dialup to download it. Maybe 4 to 5 hours.
Michel
I don't know if it is an option...is teh rpm of the source 32 MB? is is ok? Then add an ftp-server to your rpm-sources (if you don't knwo ione..I'll or maybe someone else will mentio you one..) If you say you're country..we can find one near you....There is a list of ftp-sources on Mandrake..btu if you live close to Belgium..if you DO !!! I'll supply you with another one.... from ftp..you don't have to download the entire 3rd cd....
Guest johnKFT
Thanks everyone. I bit the bullet and downloaded it the other night, after which the rage128 rpm installed OK. But guess what? Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0"!! Nothing seems to have changed at all. The XFree86 log seems identical to the previous one - basically all the dri stuff seems to load but then the extension is not initialized. Anyone any ideas? Soulse - did you mean that your DRI works 'out of the box' with the latest 9.1? Is that the -18 kernel? If so, should I upgrade to that one, and if so how?
