Dyslexic
I recently tried to add a new hard drive to a friend's system. I know the drive is connected properly. Harddrake correctly identifies the drive as "hdd", but I can't do anything with the drive because there's no entry for /dev/hdd. How do I fix this? MottS
Did you create a partition with DiskDrake and format it? Upon this it should appear as /dev/hdX and you should be able to mount it using mount -t FileSystem /dev/hdX /mnt/Whatever or put an ently in fstab Are you sure the jumpers behind the drive are OK? Are your sure it's hdd and not hdb or hdc? MOttS
Dyslexic
Yes, the jumpers are correct, and yes, it should be hdd. MS DOS's fdisk can access the drive properly. Diskdrake does not list the drive.
Michel
but did you assign it a filesystem-type like reiserFS, fat32, xfs ,....
Dyslexic
I can't format it with any filesystem. /dev/hdd doesn't exist.
Ixthusdan
When in hardrake, use the tools there to bring the drive up and format it. Then allow it to make necessary changes. It will.
Dyslexic
I thought I'd "close this incident" since the issue has been resolved in a roundabout way. I ran the Mandrake installer on the CD and went through as if I were doing an upgrade. I skipped the package installation when I got to that part. The new drive was detected, formatted and mounted properly. I had to redo the software sources, but everything else seems to be fine. I still have no idea why Diskdrake didn't work. Hopefully in Mdk 9.2.
