Chris H
Trying to install task-xfce but the software manager is giving me this message. The following packages have to be removed for others to be upgraded: mandriva-release-One-2009.0-0.10mdv2009.0.i586 (due to conflicts with mandriva-release-Flash) notification-daemon-0.3.90-0.r3017.1mdv2009.0.i586 (due to conflicts with notification-daemon-xfce-0.3.7-8mdv2009.0.i586) Call me old fashioned but it seems a bit drastic! Any other suggestions on how to install xfce? Ta
Greg2
When you use the gui package manager to install task-xfce, and it says “Please choose one of the following packagesâ€, select the package (version of depends) that matches your system. Chris H
But which is the one that matches my system? And what do the packages do? I've done it twice and chosen different ones but it still asks to remove the above. Bit mystified here.
Chris H
OK, think I've got the first one sorted. Chose the Mandriva-one option and first removal message has gone. Still unsure about the notification-daemon though. Is it important?

Is it important? If you intend to use the xfce DE, it is not important, simply select notification-daemon-xfce.
Chris H
I want to try the xfce to see how it runs memory-wise. If I do replace the notification-daemon will it cause issues when I boot into gnome again? Ta.
ffi
the notification daemons are almost identical except that the xfce one has a small patch that allows  the settings to be managed from the xfce settings panel

sjaglin
Hi Chris, Good choice! I stopped using KDE gradually a year ago when I started using my first eeepc. I now use only xfce, even on my desktop, very fluent, very fast , try thunar and mousepad and compare the starting timing compared to konqueror and kwrite, there is quite a lot of difference. As for the gkrellm equivalent, try conky, i've done a little howto there but there is more complete documentation everywhere on the net... Chris H
Ta for the info Stef. I've always flitted between kde, gnome, xfce and flux but xfce is looking more tempting as the distros become more bulked out with components and the desktop managers become less manageable on my hardware. scarecrow
XFCE 4.4.3 is great, and 4.6 (currently beta) even greater. And while it does have a certain geeky overall feel, it's exceptionally easy to manage.
supermario
Chris, I hope you manage to install it and let us know how it goes. Post a screenshot even, I'm dying to know what it would look like and how it runs. Thanks.
Chris H
Chris, I hope you manage to install it and let us know how it goes. Post a screenshot even, I'm dying to know what it would look like and how it runs. Thanks. Here we go! It's a bit more flash than previous installations of xfce, panels placed much like Gnome as opposed to traditional xfce.. Nice job to whoever put it together for Mandriva. Mind you I have got kde and gnome installed as well with all the libraries available. Performance wise it's chuffin' brilliant. My laptop fan has just cracked open an ice cold beer. KDE and to some extent Gnome had run him ragged recently. :D Edited November 11, 2008 by Chris H
